Best virtual machine apps for running Linux on Apple Silicon

UTM and Parallels Desktop are the practical first choices for a graphical Linux VM on Apple Silicon. Learn when to use QEMU, Apple virtualization, Apple’s developer framework or Fusion, and why ARM64 guest images matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people, start by comparing UTM and Parallels Desktop. UTM gives you a QEMU-based Mac app with separate emulation and Apple virtualization configuration paths. Parallels Desktop emphasizes a polished commercial workflow and ready-to-use Linux downloads, with its Pro edition aimed at developers and people running multiple virtual machines. Use Apple’s Virtualization framework when you are building your own developer workflow, and treat VMware Fusion as a conditional choice until its current release and Apple Silicon support are verified.

The most important decision comes before you install anything: an Apple Silicon Mac needs an ARM64 Linux guest image, usually labeled arm64 or aarch64. Running Intel Linux applications inside that ARM guest is a different task from booting an Intel Linux distribution.

Quick comparison

Option Best fit What is established Important qualification
UTM Users who want a flexible Mac application and control over virtualization or emulation UTM describes itself as a QEMU-based system emulator and virtual-machine host for macOS and iOS. Its documentation covers distinct QEMU and Apple virtualization settings. The available documentation does not provide a complete current feature matrix or comparable performance tests. Do not assume its two configuration paths have identical speed or device support.
Parallels Desktop Users who prioritize a guided commercial desktop experience The product page advertises ready-to-use Linux distributions. Its editions distinguish Standard and Pro, with Pro described for developers and multiple virtual machines. It is paid software. Check the purchase page for the current price, subscription terms and Apple Silicon resource limits; do not rely on an older comparison panel.
VMware Fusion Existing VMware users or people who need to evaluate another established hypervisor Fusion 13.5.1 release notes dated February 27, 2024 describe support for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and discuss x86 and ARM operating systems. That is release-specific 2024 evidence, not proof of compatibility in October 2026. Confirm the latest release, macOS support and guest-architecture policy before choosing it.
Apple Virtualization framework Developers creating a custom VM manager or embedding virtualization in software Apple documents APIs for configuring and managing Linux VMs and VIRTIO devices, with sample projects for Linux and graphical Linux guests. This is a platform API, not a finished consumer desktop application. You must build the surrounding workflow.

No independent benchmark establishes a universal speed winner. Performance depends on the Mac chip, installed macOS version, guest image, virtual CPU and memory allocation, storage, graphics workload and whether the guest is virtualized or emulated.

Start with the architecture question

Choose an ARM64 Linux image

Apple’s GUI Linux documentation tells Apple Silicon users to select a 64-bit ARM image. Distribution download pages may call the same architecture arm64, aarch64 or ARM 64-bit. Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu are examples of distributions with ARM images. An ISO labeled only x86_64 or amd64 is intended for Intel-compatible hardware and is not the normal starting point for a virtualized Apple Silicon guest.

Check the image label before creating the VM. A correctly named distribution is not enough: confirm that the particular edition, installer and any third-party repository you need actually publishes an ARM build. Some packages, proprietary drivers and applications may still be unavailable for ARM even when the operating system itself boots.

Do not confuse an Intel application with an Intel guest

Apple documents translation support for Intel Linux binaries running inside an ARM Linux virtual machine. That can help when an application has no native ARM build, but it does not turn an Intel distribution ISO into an Apple Silicon guest. Apple states that its Virtualization framework “doesn’t support the bootstrapping or installation of Intel Linux distributions on Mac computers with Apple silicon.”

Use this distinction when planning a project:

  • ARM Linux guest: the normal, hardware-aligned choice for Apple Silicon virtualization.
  • Intel Linux application: potentially runnable through documented translation support inside the ARM guest, subject to the application and its dependencies.
  • Intel Linux distribution: a different requirement that may involve full CPU emulation, different software and lower or less predictable performance. Do not assume a virtualization setting will provide it.

How to choose between the four paths

Pick UTM for configuration flexibility

UTM is the most natural first comparison for someone who wants a Mac application but does not want to be locked into one execution model. Its QEMU foundation supports both virtual-machine hosting and system emulation. The documentation exposes separate settings for QEMU and Apple virtualization, so you can select a hardware-assisted path for a compatible ARM guest or an emulation path when the guest architecture or device model requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That flexibility also creates more decisions. The mode you select changes which CPU, boot, storage, networking and device options are available. Read the current UTM documentation for the mode you are creating instead of copying settings from a guide written for the other path. The available evidence does not establish that QEMU mode and Apple virtualization mode deliver the same performance, graphics integration or snapshot behavior.

Pick Parallels for guided setup and multiple VMs

Parallels Desktop is a commercial desktop application whose product page advertises ready-to-use Linux distributions. That can remove several manual steps: locating a suitable ARM image, creating a virtual disk and selecting basic guest settings. The product description positions Standard as the general desktop tier and Pro as the tier for developers and users running multiple virtual machines.

Convenience is the reason to consider it, not a measured speed claim. Verify the current macOS and Linux support list, edition limits, billing terms and virtual hardware caps on the purchase and documentation pages. Product comparison sections can change independently, so do not quote a CPU, memory or VM-count limit unless the current edition documentation states it.

Use Apple’s framework when you are writing the VM workflow

The Virtualization framework is appropriate when a developer needs programmatic control rather than a ready-made desktop interface. Apple documents a configuration object that can define virtual CPUs, memory, boot loading, storage, networking and other devices. Its VIRTIO support provides standardized virtual devices, and Apple supplies sample projects for Linux and GUI Linux guests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This route is valuable for repeatable development environments, automated testing or an application that needs to create and manage VMs itself. It also imposes the most engineering work: you need to handle image acquisition, disk creation, lifecycle controls, console or GUI access, networking, persistence and error reporting. It is not a one-click replacement for UTM or Parallels.

Consider Fusion only after a current-support check

VMware Fusion remains relevant to organizations that already use VMware terminology, tooling or VM images. However, the official material available for this comparison is the Fusion 13.5.1 release note from February 27, 2024. It says that release supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs and discusses x86 and ARM operating systems; it does not establish the current product release or compatibility matrix for a 2026 Mac.

Before installing Fusion, confirm all of the following in current VMware documentation:

  • the latest Fusion version and whether it runs on your installed macOS release;
  • whether Apple Silicon hosts support the guest distribution and architecture you intend to use;
  • the current licensing and download route;
  • any restrictions on importing existing x86 VMs or using emulation; and
  • which graphics, networking, shared-folder and snapshot features are available on Apple Silicon.

Prepare before creating the VM

  1. Identify the Mac. Record the Apple chip family, installed memory, available storage and macOS version. These determine which guest images and host applications are realistic.
  2. Define the workload. A terminal server, software build, graphical desktop, browser test and 3D application have very different CPU, memory, graphics and storage needs.
  3. Download the matching image. Choose the distribution’s arm64 or aarch64 installer for an Apple Silicon guest. Keep the checksum or signature information supplied by the distribution so you can verify the download.
  4. Reserve host storage. The installer ISO is only part of the footprint. Leave room for the virtual disk, guest updates, snapshots and the host’s normal free-space requirement. A nearly full Mac can make an otherwise healthy VM fail during updates or snapshot creation.
  5. Choose the execution path. In UTM, decide between Apple virtualization and QEMU settings. In a commercial app, use the ARM/Linux template if offered. In a custom framework project, configure the virtual hardware explicitly.
  6. Plan data exchange. Decide whether the guest needs networking, shared folders, clipboard integration or USB devices. Enable only what the workload requires, especially when the VM will open untrusted files.

Creating an ARM Linux VM in UTM

The exact labels can change between UTM releases, but the safe process follows the distinction in UTM’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open UTM and start a new virtual machine.
  2. Choose the virtualization path intended for an ARM Linux guest when the distribution and host configuration are compatible. Select QEMU emulation only when you have a specific architecture or device-model reason.
  3. Attach the downloaded ARM64 Linux ISO as the installer medium. Do not attach an x86_64 image merely because it is the first result on a distribution page.
  4. Set virtual CPU count and memory conservatively at first. Leave enough resources for macOS and any other applications; increase allocation only after observing the guest workload.
  5. Create a virtual disk in a location with adequate free space. Decide whether the disk should grow as data is added or consume its maximum size immediately, based on your storage and backup plan.
  6. Configure networking and, if needed, a shared directory. Treat shared folders as a convenience, not as a substitute for guest backups.
  7. Boot the VM and complete the Linux installer. If it drops to a boot menu or reports an architecture mismatch, stop and recheck the ISO label and the selected UTM mode.
  8. After the first boot, install updates inside Linux, then shut down cleanly and create a known-good backup or snapshot if your chosen mode supports it.

UTM’s QEMU and Apple virtualization paths are not interchangeable presets. If a setting, device or integration feature is missing, verify which path the VM uses before troubleshooting the guest operating system.

Creating a Linux VM with Parallels Desktop

  1. Install the current Parallels Desktop release that lists support for your macOS version and Apple Silicon Mac.
  2. Use its Linux creation or download workflow and select an ARM-compatible distribution. If the wizard offers several images, check that the architecture is ARM64 rather than Intel.
  3. Review the proposed virtual hardware before starting the installer. The recommended values are a starting point, not a benchmark-backed optimum; keep sufficient CPU cores, memory and storage for macOS.
  4. Complete the Linux installation and allow the guest integration tools, updates and device setup to finish before judging usability.
  5. For development, test the actual toolchain you need: compiler, container runtime, debugger, browser, database or editor. A desktop that boots successfully may still lack an ARM build of one critical dependency.
  6. If you plan to run several VMs, check the current Pro documentation for the supported management and resource features instead of assuming that every feature shown in an older comparison table remains unchanged.

Building a VM with Apple’s Virtualization framework

A custom implementation should be treated as software development, not as an installer shortcut. Apple’s framework documentation describes the major pieces you must assemble.

  1. Create a VZVirtualMachineConfiguration and select an ARM-compatible Linux boot process for the Apple Silicon host.
  2. Configure the virtual CPU and memory counts, ensuring the host retains enough resources to run the application and macOS.
  3. Add a virtual storage device backed by a disk image and a virtual network device if the guest needs network access.
  4. Configure VIRTIO devices and any console or graphical display path required by the guest.
  5. Use an ARM Linux ISO for installation. Apple’s GUI Linux sample demonstrates this pattern on Apple Silicon.
  6. Implement lifecycle operations such as start, pause, stop and recovery from a failed launch. Persist the disk image and configuration outside temporary application data.
  7. Test device access, networking, file transfer and shutdown behavior on the macOS versions you intend to support.

The framework gives you control over the VM; it does not provide a distribution catalog, a complete desktop shell or automatic guest support for every Linux application.

Performance: what you can and cannot conclude

Virtualization and emulation are different. With a compatible ARM Linux guest, hardware-assisted virtualization can usually avoid translating every CPU instruction. Emulation may be necessary for a different guest architecture or device model, but it adds translation work and can change which peripherals and graphics features are available. The existence of both paths in UTM is evidence of configurability, not a measured ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not publish or rely on a claim that one app is “fastest” without a controlled test using the same Mac, macOS build, Linux image, virtual CPU and memory allocation, storage location, graphics settings and workload. A compile benchmark, desktop responsiveness test and database workload can produce different winners. The current evidence contains no such independent comparison.

For a useful personal test, record the configuration and measure the task you actually care about: clean boot time, package installation, compilation duration, browser workload, disk-intensive build or GUI application behavior. Repeat after changing one variable, such as memory or storage location. Keep host activity consistent and note whether the VM is virtualized or emulated.

Common failure modes and fixes

The installer says the image is unsupported

Check the ISO filename and distribution download page for arm64 or aarch64. If the image is amd64 or x86_64, obtain the ARM build or deliberately switch to an emulation workflow after confirming that your chosen app supports it.

The VM boots but an application will not install

First determine whether the application has an ARM Linux package. If it is Intel-only, investigate documented Intel-binary translation inside the ARM guest. Translation does not guarantee compatibility with kernel modules, drivers, virtualization extensions or proprietary graphics components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Mac becomes unresponsive while the VM runs

Reduce the VM’s CPU and memory allocation, close other heavy applications and check free storage. A VM should not consume every host resource. If the problem appears only after enabling emulation, compare the same guest with a native ARM image.

Networking or shared folders fail

Confirm that the virtual device is enabled in the app or framework configuration, then test basic guest networking before adding shared-folder or clipboard integration. In a custom framework app, inspect the VIRTIO device configuration and error handling rather than assuming the Linux installer configured it automatically.

A guide’s menu labels do not match

Version differences are common. Check the installed app version, whether the VM uses Apple virtualization or QEMU, and the current vendor documentation. Do not apply a setting from a different mode simply because the name looks similar.

Decision checklist

  • Choose UTM when you want a flexible graphical app and are comfortable selecting between Apple virtualization and QEMU settings.
  • Choose Parallels Desktop when guided Linux setup and a commercial multi-VM workflow matter more than minimizing software cost.
  • Choose Apple’s Virtualization framework when you are developing an application or repeatable automation around VMs.
  • Choose VMware Fusion only after verifying current Apple Silicon, macOS and guest support for the release you will install.
  • Regardless of app, start with an ARM64 Linux image, distinguish Intel applications from Intel distributions, and validate the exact workload instead of trusting generic performance claims.

What to verify before committing

Compatibility is a moving target. Recheck the app’s current release notes, your macOS version, the Linux distribution’s ARM download, licensing and any required integration tools immediately before deployment. For a business or development environment, document the VM image, configuration, update policy, backup location and recovery procedure. That record is more valuable than a broad claim that an app is universally best.
