The best no-mod customization in Vintage Story is a tailored ruleset, not one universal preset. Start with Exploration for a low-pressure introduction, Standard for the intended survival experience, Wilderness Survival for severe penalties, or Creative Building for construction. Then adjust individual world rules, your seraph’s class and appearance, clothing, graphics, accessibility options, and (for multiplayer) server configuration.
This guide explains what each setting changes, which combinations suit different goals, and how to increase or reduce difficulty without installing a mod. Labels and behavior can change between game versions, so compare the options below with the settings shown in your installed build. The Vintage Story Wiki settings reference was last verified for version 1.19.7, while the clothing data cited here was verified for version 1.22.5.

Choose a world preset before changing individual rules
When you create a world, Vintage Story lets you choose a pre-made template or customize settings individually. A preset establishes a coherent baseline; individual controls then let you remove the parts you dislike without discarding the rest of the experience.
| Preset | What it changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration | Hostile creature aggression and temporal stability are turned off; hunger and temperature pressure are reduced; inventory is kept on death. | Beginners, explorers, and players learning crafting and world systems. |
| Standard | Temporal stability, hunger, realistic temperature, first-night monsters, and inventory loss on death are active. | The intended full-survival experience. |
| Wilderness Survival | Immediate inventory drop, random respawn within a massive radius, reduced health, and stronger creatures create severe penalties. | Experienced players who want survival to dominate every decision. |
| Homo sapiens | Mystical-lore features such as traders and ancient ruins are removed. | A grounded playthrough without those lore-related systems. |
| Creative Building | Creates a flat building world and enables Creative Mode. | Construction, testing designs, and experimentation without survival pressure. |
Exploration is the easiest starting point because it removes several simultaneous pressures rather than simply making enemies weaker. Standard is a better baseline if you want to learn the systems under normal survival conditions. Wilderness Survival is not merely “Standard but harder”: its inventory, health, respawn, and creature rules can make a single mistake affect a large portion of a playthrough.

How to select a preset
- Start the new-world creation process and choose a template on the world settings screen.
- Read the preset description, especially its death, temperature, hunger, and temporal-stability rules.
- Use the individual-setting controls to change only the rules that conflict with your goal.
- Create the world, then play long enough to observe the effect of each change before adding another one.
World rules that have the biggest effect
Individual controls fall into three practical groups: threat level, realism, and resource or terrain distribution. Decide which group you want to change before touching a slider or toggle; otherwise it is easy to make a world that is difficult in an unintended way.
Grace Timer: delay the first monster pressure
The Grace Timer determines how long monsters are prevented from appearing at the beginning of a world. The documented range is 0 to 10 in-game days. A value near the upper end gives a new player time to establish shelter, food, and basic tools; zero removes that buffer. Increasing it preserves the rest of Standard’s survival systems while making the opening less punishing.

Death Punishment: choose what a mistake costs
Death Punishment controls the consequences of dying. Standard includes inventory loss on death, while Exploration keeps inventory. Wilderness Survival uses an immediate inventory drop and also changes respawn behavior. If you want hunger, temperature, and temporal stability to remain meaningful but find item loss frustrating, change this rule rather than switching entirely to Exploration.
Dropped Item Timer: create a recovery window
The Dropped Item Timer controls how long items remain available after they are dropped. The documented range is 5 to 60 minutes. A longer value gives you time to navigate back after a dangerous death or a long mining trip; a shorter value increases urgency. This setting changes recovery pressure, not the damage or enemy that caused the death.
True Winters: make the seasons consequential
True Winters adds a harsher winter pattern. It belongs in the realism and environmental-danger category: food planning, clothing, shelter, and travel matter more when the cold season is severe. Enable it when you want the calendar to shape your preparation; leave it off when you prefer a gentler climate while keeping other survival rules active.

Temporal Stability: retain or remove the supernatural threat
Temporal stability is active in Standard and disabled in Exploration. Keeping it on preserves one of Vintage Story’s distinctive hazards. Turning it off is a focused way to remove that pressure without changing hunger, temperature, or inventory rules individually.
Climate Distribution: change the kind of landscape you inhabit
Climate Distribution affects how climate is spread through the generated world. It is useful when you want a different environmental journey rather than a different combat difficulty. Because climate influences temperature and available conditions, pair a change here with clothing and food planning rather than treating it as a cosmetic option.
Surface Deposit Frequency: adjust early resource availability
Surface Deposit Frequency changes how often resources are exposed near the surface. Increasing it can make early progression less dependent on deep exploration; reducing it makes locating surface materials a larger part of survival. This is a resource-distribution change, so it is a better solution than lowering enemy danger when your real problem is obtaining basic materials.
Build a difficulty profile instead of chasing a single “best” setting
The following combinations keep the rules internally consistent and are easier to troubleshoot than changing every option at once.
Gentle first world
- Select Exploration.
- Keep generation defaults until you understand how climate and deposits affect your region.
- Personalize your seraph’s appearance and starter clothing.
- Use a comfortable GUI scale and disable view bobbing if camera motion bothers you.
This profile teaches movement, crafting, exploration, and building without asking you to learn temporal stability, first-night monsters, and inventory recovery simultaneously.

Classic survival with less frustration
- Select Standard.
- Increase the Grace Timer so the first settlement is not rushed.
- Choose a less severe Death Punishment if recovering equipment is the main source of frustration.
- Extend the Dropped Item Timer toward the upper part of its 5–60-minute range when you frequently die far from home.
- Leave hunger, temperature, and temporal stability active.
This keeps the systems that define survival while making early mistakes recoverable.
Hard survival
- Select Wilderness Survival, or start with Standard and increase difficulty one rule at a time.
- Enable True Winters and retain temporal threats.
- Use a severe death rule, faster food spoilage, cave-ins, and block gravity on a server where those options are available.
- Test one change for several in-game days before adding another.
Starting with Standard is preferable when you want to identify which penalty is responsible for a problem. Wilderness Survival changes several high-impact systems at once.
Builder or creative tester
- Select Creative Building for a flat world with Creative Mode.
- Use a naturally generated custom world with Creative Mode when you want real terrain instead of a flat test area.
Customize your seraph without a mod
Vanilla character creation covers more than a name. You can select hairstyles, facial hair, eye colors, skin tones, voice pitch, and starter clothing. These choices are independent of the world preset, so an Exploration character can look exactly like a Standard or Wilderness character.
Understand what class changes
There are six player classes. Class selection changes hunger rate, movement speed, crafting abilities, combat strengths, and weaknesses. Commoner is presented as the balanced default. Hunter, Malefactor, Clockmaker, Blackguard, and Tailor are specialist choices intended for different play styles.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Class choice | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Commoner | Balanced starting point when you do not want a pronounced advantage or drawback. |
| Hunter | Specialist option for a play style centered on hunting and field survival; check its in-game description for the exact modifiers in your version. |
| Malefactor | Specialist option with a different risk-and-reward profile; review the current class tooltip before committing. |
| Clockmaker | Specialist option suited to players who want its distinctive crafting and utility profile. |
| Blackguard | Specialist option for a combat-oriented approach; confirm the displayed strengths and weaknesses in the character screen. |
| Tailor | Specialist option with an emphasis different from the balanced Commoner; it also has access to many restricted clothing pieces. |
The exact numerical modifiers are version-sensitive. Choose a class for its displayed trade-offs, not for a generic tier list. If this is your first world, Commoner avoids forcing you to learn a specialization while you are still learning temperature, food, and tool progression.

- You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever - but things have gone terribly wrong.
- The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted.
Use clothing for appearance and temperature management
Clothes are equipment that changes the player’s appearance, and many garments also provide cold protection. Accessories can be purely cosmetic. Starter clothes come from class selection; additional pieces can be crafted from cloth, leather, or related materials, found as ruin loot, or purchased from traders. Tailors can craft many pieces that are restricted elsewhere.
How warmth works
Under default world settings, a character without clothing begins taking cold damage below 0°C. A worked example in the clothing reference gives a full, good-condition fur set +6.5°C warmth. Treat that figure as an example for the stated item condition and game version, not as a universal value for every outfit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMaintain condition before a long winter
Clothing loses condition while worn. Under default settings, the reference states that condition decreases by 100% after 54 days (six months). Repairing an item restores 10% with flax twine, 50% with linen, or 75% with a sewing kit. Carry repair materials when traveling in cold regions, and check condition before committing to a long expedition.
Practical clothing decisions
- On an Exploration world, use clothing primarily to reduce cold damage and personalize appearance.
- On Standard or Wilderness, treat warmth as part of your shelter and food plan rather than a cosmetic upgrade.
- If True Winters is enabled, prioritize a reliable warm set before the severe season arrives.
- Use the class selection screen to plan your starter outfit, then replace it with crafted, looted, or trader clothing as your materials improve.
Tune graphics, performance, and motion comfort
Client settings can make the game easier to read and more comfortable without changing the world rules. The settings reference documents SSAO, shadows, particles, dynamic lights, resolution, FPS limits, VSync, RAM optimization, occlusion culling, view bobbing, camera-shake strength, GUI scale, the minimap, immersive mouse mode, and immersive first-person mode.
| Setting group | Use it to improve | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|
| SSAO, shadows, particles, dynamic lights | Visual depth, lighting, and atmosphere. | Higher visual quality can increase rendering load. |
| Resolution, FPS limit, VSync | Image sharpness and frame pacing. | Higher resolution or uncapped frame rates can increase GPU load; VSync changes how frames are synchronized. |
| RAM optimization and occlusion culling | Memory use and rendering efficiency. | Occlusion culling can reduce GPU load, but its benefit depends on the scene and hardware. |
| View bobbing and camera-shake strength | Motion comfort. | Reducing or disabling them removes movement effects some players find immersive. |
| GUI scale, minimap, block/coordinate overlays | Interface and location readability. | A larger GUI improves legibility but leaves less room for the game view. |
| Immersive mouse mode and immersive first-person mode | How the cursor, hands, and first-person view behave. | More immersive presentation can make interface access less immediate. |
A sensible tuning order
- Set the resolution and FPS limit appropriate for your display.
- Use VSync if you prefer synchronized frame delivery; compare it with an FPS limit if latency matters more to you.
- Reduce shadows, particles, dynamic lights, or SSAO when the frame rate drops in busy scenes.
- Enable occlusion culling if GPU load is high and compare the result in a settlement and underground area.
- Adjust GUI scale and block or coordinate overlays for readability.
- Lower view bobbing and camera-shake strength before changing other visual settings if motion is uncomfortable.
- Recheck labels in your installed build. The settings reference was last verified for Vintage Story 1.19.7, so later versions may rename or relocate options.
Configure a no-mod multiplayer server
Server owners can change important rules through startup parameters and serverconfig.json. A WinterNode guide published December 22, 2025 documents these controls and recommends changing only one or two settings at a time, then playing for several in-game days before making another adjustment.

How to troubleshoot a world that feels wrong
The opening is too dangerous
Increase the Grace Timer first. If deaths remain too costly, adjust Death Punishment or extend the Dropped Item Timer. Do not immediately disable every survival system; identify whether the problem is early monsters, recovery time, or the loss itself.
The world feels flat or resource-starved
Review Climate Distribution and Surface Deposit Frequency. These controls affect the generated environment and early materials, so changing them is more targeted than reducing creature difficulty.
Winter is killing the character
Check whether True Winters is enabled, inspect clothing condition, and confirm that the outfit provides warmth. A good-condition fur set is documented at +6.5°C in the cited example, but worn clothing loses effectiveness as condition declines. Repair with flax twine, linen, or a sewing kit before the next trip.
The game looks good but runs poorly
Lower shadows, particles, dynamic lights, or SSAO; set a practical FPS limit; and test occlusion culling. Change one visual group at a time so you know which adjustment improved frame rate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Increase GUI scale, enable block or coordinate overlays for navigation, and reduce view bobbing or camera-shake strength. Immersive modes are optional presentation choices, not requirements for survival.
A server change causes errors
Stop the server, restore the backed-up configuration, and verify the parameter name against the installed server version. A key documented by a hosting guide may not be accepted by a different release or hosting setup.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Exploration, Standard, Wilderness Survival, Homo sapiens, or Creative Building according to the experience you want first.
- Change only the world rule that addresses your specific frustration.
- Use Grace Timer and Dropped Item Timer to soften the opening and recovery without removing survival systems.
- Use True Winters, temporal stability, food spoilage, cave-ins, and block gravity when you want environmental or systemic danger.
- Pick Commoner for a balanced first character, or read each specialist class’s current tooltip before committing.
- Plan clothing around the 0°C cold-damage threshold and maintain condition with the available repair materials.
- Tune graphics and motion settings for your hardware and comfort; verify labels against your installed version.
- On servers, back up first, change one or two parameters, observe several in-game days, and keep a rollback path.
