Best Video Recording Software for YouTube Creators: OBS vs. Streamlabs

OBS Studio offers flexible recording control; Streamlabs Desktop provides a guided alternative. Compare capture and audio needs, then test settings on your own computer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS Studio is a strong first choice for YouTube creators who want flexible control over screen, game, camera, and audio capture. Streamlabs Desktop is a reasonable alternative if you prefer a guided setup and an integrated recording-and-streaming workflow. Neither is a universal winner: the right fit depends on what you need to capture, how much configuration you want, and how your computer handles your chosen settings.

Which recording software should you choose?

Software Good fit if you want What to check
OBS Studio Flexible scenes and source control for desktop, game, webcam, or capture-card recording. Run its Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test performance with the scenes and settings you will actually use. OBS warns that compatible hardware is not necessarily capable of recording smoothly.
Streamlabs Desktop A guided interface for recording, with streaming tools available in the same workflow. Review current feature and plan details, and compare its recording controls with your needs for audio tracks, output resolution, frame rate, format, and encoder.

These are workflow recommendations, not benchmark rankings. The available product documentation does not provide controlled head-to-head performance results, and no comparative hands-on test establishes that either program is faster, lighter, or produces better quality.

What to compare before installing

  • Capture source: Do you need a game, one application window, the whole display, a webcam, or a capture card? OBS documents desktop and window capture on Windows and Linux, macOS screen capture, Windows game capture, and video capture sources for a webcam or capture card. Streamlabs describes capturing a full display, a window, or a game, as well as a Screen Capture source.
  • Audio control: Check whether you can select the intended microphone and desktop audio, see their meters respond, and record separate audio tracks if your workflow needs them.
  • Setup preference: OBS starts with a wizard and then lets you configure scenes and sources. Streamlabs’ getting-started flow offers setup choices for recording or streaming and supports importing OBS settings.
  • Computer load: Compare results on your own machine at your target resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Product compatibility alone does not establish how smoothly a particular setup will record.
  • Recording controls: Compare output resolution, frame rate, file format, encoder choices, and recording location in the current version of each application.

Set up a recording that protects the footage

  1. Choose what belongs in the capture. Decide whether to record a game, application window, full desktop, camera, microphone, or desktop audio. Prefer a specific window or game source when you do not need the whole screen, and check what will be visible before recording.
  2. Run setup or select sources manually. In OBS, begin with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, add the required scene sources, and check the audio meters. OBS says desktop audio and microphone are captured by default, but you can select devices manually. In Streamlabs, choose the camera and microphone devices you intend to use and add the relevant capture source.
  3. Choose a frame rate and resolution your computer can sustain. Streamlabs recommends 60 FPS in most cases and says static board-game footage may work at 30 FPS; that is vendor guidance, not a universal requirement. If recording performance suffers, try a lower output resolution or frame rate and test again rather than assuming your hardware will meet a target.
  4. Confirm the recording location and format. Streamlabs’ recording guide suggests MP4 in most cases, and YouTube’s upload encoding guidance specifies an MP4 container for its recommended upload settings. For a project that would be difficult to recreate, check the current recovery behavior of your chosen recording format instead of assuming all formats handle a crash or power loss alike.
  5. Make a short test and inspect it. OBS recommends a test recording of a few minutes; Streamlabs’ recording guide also recommends a short test and checking system performance. Play it back to confirm framing, image smoothness, microphone clarity, and desktop audio before an important session.

OBS’s System Requirements page states: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page is dated August 25, 2021, so consult current documentation as software and hardware support change. OBS System Requirements

Prepare the finished recording for YouTube

Recording settings and upload-encoding guidance are related but not interchangeable. YouTube Help recommends an MP4 container and H.264 video, and advises matching the upload frame rate to the frame rate used to record. Its common frame-rate values include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps.

For SDR uploads, YouTube lists recommended bitrates of 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps for 1080p at high frame rates; for 1440p, 16 Mbps and 24 Mbps respectively; and for 2160p/4K, 35–45 Mbps and 53–68 Mbps respectively. These are upload recommendations, not mandatory recorder settings. YouTube’s page says the feature is available only to partners using YouTube Studio Content Manager, so check the current page and its applicability before treating these figures as requirements for your channel: YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

Common recording problems and fixes

  • The recording stutters or the computer struggles: Run a new test with the same sources you plan to use. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or revisit encoder settings. OBS says performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; compatibility alone is not a performance guarantee.
  • Your voice or desktop audio is missing: Check the selected microphone and desktop-audio devices, then speak or play audio and confirm the corresponding meters move. Make another short recording and listen to it; a visible capture does not prove that sound was recorded.
  • The wrong screen content appears: Review whether the source is set to a game, window, or full display. Check which windows are visible and capture only the material you intend to show.
  • The file is not where you expected: Confirm the recording path in the application’s current output settings and make a brief test file before a longer session.
  • You are unsure whether the file is upload-ready: Inspect its frame rate, format, and encoding against YouTube’s current upload guidance. The listed bitrates are recommendations with the availability qualification noted above, not settings every creator must use.

When a recording is meant to become a 24/7 live stream

OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop record locally; they are not the same thing as a cloud service that loops an uploaded recording as a YouTube live stream. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded video looping without a computer or home connection staying on. It is for uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts, and streams to YouTube only.
