1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse an MP4 source file with H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical, widely compatible starting point. That is a source-file choice, not a YouTube Live requirement: the encoder or cloud service sending the stream controls the live feed’s format and settings. For a standard RTMPS stream, YouTube recommends H.264, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval.
Source-file format and live-stream format are different
An MP4 containing H.264 video and AAC audio is a sensible choice for the prerecorded video you plan to play. YouTube’s video-upload guidance recommends MP4 as a container and lists H.264 and AAC-LC among its supported upload formats. Those are upload recommendations; YouTube does not state that a prerecorded source file for a live encoder must be MP4. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations also include progressive video and 48 kHz audio.

The live stream is a separate encoded feed. Your playback and streaming software reads the source, encodes or passes through the video and audio, and sends that feed to YouTube. YouTube detects the incoming encoder settings and transcodes the live stream into formats suited to viewers’ devices and network conditions. The source container therefore does not dictate the format viewers ultimately receive. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe the feed sent to YouTube.

Recommended settings for a standard RTMPS stream
For a conventional SDR stream, RTMPS is YouTube’s general recommendation. Choose settings your encoder supports and your internet connection can sustain; the bitrate figures below are for H.264, not AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists these recommendations and additional codec-specific values.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For comparison, YouTube lists 10 Mbps recommended at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60 for AV1 or H.265/HEVC; both have a 4 Mbps minimum at those frame rates. Do not apply H.264 figures to a different codec. Use the bitrate row that matches the codec, resolution and frame rate actually sent by your encoder.
Core encoder settings
- Protocol: RTMPS, unless your workflow needs a different supported ingestion method.
- Video codec: H.264 is a straightforward compatibility-oriented choice. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and specifies four seconds as the maximum.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps. Keep the outgoing frame rate appropriate for the source and intended stream.
- Advanced H.264 settings: YouTube’s general recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Its stereo recommendation is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps; for 5.1 audio, it gives 48 kHz at 384 kbps.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can hold
Higher resolution and frame rate can preserve more detail, but only if the outgoing feed is stable. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Its encoder guidance recommends checking upload bitrate, while its streaming tips advise leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom.

Use the recommended bitrate as a target, not a reason to ignore connection capacity. If your upload speed varies, lower the resolution or bitrate enough to leave headroom rather than running at the edge of your available bandwidth. The bitrate must account for the live feed being sent, including audio.

HLS is a specialized alternative, not the usual first choice for a simple prerecorded loop. YouTube says to use HLS for HDR streaming or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3 or EAC3 audio, and it has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it transmits segments.

YouTube’s HLS requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT and TS segments. Byte ranges are unsupported, and the playlist must roll forward with no more than five outstanding segments. Check the current YouTube HLS ingestion instructions before configuring a sender; these constraints make HLS less convenient for a basic loop.
Set up the loop, then verify the live feed
The source format does not determine whether playback loops or whether the transition between repetitions is seamless. That behavior belongs to the playback or streaming software you choose; verify that it supports looping and test the actual transition instead of assuming every repeated file will play without a gap.

- Prepare the file: Export or select an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio as a practical source choice. Check that the picture and sound play correctly from beginning to end.
- Configure the sender: In your encoder or streaming service, select RTMPS and set the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR and two-second keyframe interval. Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec and output mode you selected.
- Connect YouTube: Create or select the YouTube live stream and provide its stream key to the sender. YouTube describes a stream key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep the key private. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains this connection.
- Preview before going live: Send a test feed, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and listen for audio problems. Confirm the loop behaves as intended before relying on it for a long broadcast.
- Monitor while live: Watch stream health and check both picture and audio. If the feed becomes unstable, reduce the output demands or address the connection before raising bitrate again. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing, previewing and monitoring.
Copyright and monetization still apply to prerecorded loops
Using a video as a live source does not grant rights to its music, footage or other material. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights or permissions for everything in the recording. Repeating a recording also does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply independently of the technical stream format. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and its copyright guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept or detect the feed | Incorrect stream key, destination or connection settings | Check the stream key and RTMPS destination in the sender, then confirm the correct live stream is selected. Never post the key publicly. |
| Buffering, dropped frames or unstable stream health | Outgoing bitrate is too high for reliable upload capacity, or the connection fluctuates | Check upload bitrate and leave the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed. |
| Video looks soft or differs from the source | The live encoder’s output resolution, codec or bitrate does not match the intended settings | Inspect the outgoing encoder settings and compare the bitrate with YouTube’s table for that codec and frame rate. YouTube transcodes incoming live feeds for viewers. |
| Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync | Source audio or encoder audio settings need attention | Play the source locally, confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3, and check the applicable sample-rate and bitrate settings. |
| A pause or jump occurs where the video repeats | Looping behavior in the playback software or a discontinuity at the file boundary | Test the loop in the chosen playback tool and inspect the source’s ending and beginning; the file container alone cannot guarantee a seamless transition. |
| HLS feed is rejected or delayed | Segments, playlist behavior or transport do not meet YouTube’s HLS requirements | Verify HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; account for higher latency than RTMP. |
Or let it run in the cloud
