For 1080p YouTube Live, match the bitrate to the stream’s frame rate and incoming codec: YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps; for AV1 or H.265, it recommends 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. Use the live-ingestion figures for the stream sent to YouTube—not the lower figures listed for uploading ordinary videos.
Recommended 1080p YouTube Live bitrates
YouTube’s published live-ingestion recommendations depend on both frame rate and codec. These are platform recommendations, not a promise of identical picture quality for every scene or encoder. The same guidance lists minimum bitrates, but reaching a minimum does not make it the recommended target.

YouTube’s live guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube’s stated maximum keyframe interval is four seconds. Check that your encoder and selected ingest protocol support the codec you plan to send.

Match the source rather than changing numbers blindly
For prerecorded playout, set the outgoing stream to the intended resolution, frame rate and codec, then use the live-ingestion recommendation for that combination. The figures are for the signal YouTube ingests; they are not a separate bitrate prescription for a prerecorded file. If you change the outgoing frame rate or codec, choose the corresponding table row.
Make sure the connection can sustain the bitrate
A recommended setting is useful only if the upload connection can deliver it reliably. Run an upload-speed test on the connection the encoder will use, then test the actual stream before relying on it. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health while live. A speed-test result alone cannot establish that a particular bitrate will remain stable throughout a stream.

- Confirm the encoder’s outgoing resolution, frame rate and codec.
- Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then choose the recommended bitrate from the table.
- Measure upload speed on the same internet connection the stream will use. If it cannot reliably carry the selected stream, lower the output settings and test again rather than assuming the published recommendation will work on that connection.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the intended broadcast. Include representative movement and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- During the stream, monitor stream health and respond to instability by checking the connection and encoder output settings.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload bitrate
YouTube publishes separate encoding recommendations for uploaded videos. For 1080p uploads, it lists 8 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). Those are upload-encoding figures, not YouTube Live ingestion recommendations. This difference explains why a search result giving 8 Mbps for 1080p may not answer a live-streaming question.
