If you want to digitize gameplay already recorded on VHS, connect a VCR to your computer through an analog USB video-capture device. Match the adapter’s inputs to your VCR’s output—usually composite RCA, or S-Video on some S-VHS decks—and check video-format and computer compatibility before buying. This is different from recording live gameplay onto VHS, which uses a separate recording setup.
What kind of capture device do you need?
For VHS playback, look for a USB video-capture adapter with analog inputs, not an HDMI-only game capture card. The VCR plays the tape and sends video and audio to the adapter; the adapter feeds that signal to a computer, where recording software saves a digital file.

| Device | Inputs and connection | Video formats | Computer compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elgato Video Capture | Composite video with RCA audio, or S-Video with RCA audio; Elgato’s quick-start guide calls for a free USB 2.0 port. | NTSC, SECAM, PAL, and PAL/60, according to Elgato. | Check Elgato’s current requirements and software support for your computer before purchase; the cited pages do not establish current support for every operating-system release. |
| StarTech.com SVID2USB232 | USB 2.0 adapter with composite and S-Video inputs. | Not stated on the cited product page. | Windows-only according to StarTech.com; check drivers and software compatibility for your Windows release. The cited page does not establish macOS or Linux support. |
Use composite RCA if that is what your VCR provides. If both the VCR and adapter support S-Video, it can preserve a clearer picture than composite: Elgato says “S-Video offers higher video clarity than Composite.” This is manufacturer guidance, not a side-by-side test of these two adapters.

Check the tape’s regional video standard as well as the connector. A matching plug does not by itself establish that a device supports the format recorded on the tape. Elgato lists four input formats; the cited StarTech page does not state a comparable list.
How to record VHS gameplay on a computer
- Check the tape and VCR. Confirm that the tape plays and identify the VCR’s video output: composite RCA, or S-Video if available. For standard composite playback, connect video and audio; an S-VHS deck may offer S-Video for video alongside separate audio.
- Match the adapter. Choose a capture device with the same video connector and support for the tape’s video format. Confirm that its driver and recording software work with your computer’s operating system.
- Connect the chain. Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to the capture adapter, then connect the adapter to the computer. Follow the device’s own connection guide; Elgato’s quick-start guide specifies USB 2.0.
- Select a recording application and source. OBS Studio can record a video-capture-device source. In OBS, add or select the capture device as a video capture source, then confirm that its picture and audio appear before recording. OBS’s console-capture guidance says macOS and Linux users should prefer devices that support USB Video Class (UVC) for best compatibility; this general guidance does not confirm that any particular VHS adapter will be recognized or produce the desired recording.
- Play and check a short section. Watch and listen to the preview for missing audio, unstable playback, or picture synchronization problems before capturing the full tape. Software settings cannot guarantee a clean result from a damaged tape or a poor playback signal.
- Record and review the file. Start recording in the application, play the tape, and inspect the saved file afterward to make sure it contains both picture and sound.
When does a better VCR or time-base corrector matter?
Capture quality depends on the signal coming off the tape, not just on the adapter. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) says, “It is critically important to obtain the best and most problem-free signal off of the tape because the better the signal that is fed to the digitization device, the better the result.” Its digitization guidance says a consumer VCR can work, while professional or prosumer equipment and S-VHS machines can provide better playback.

A time-base corrector (TBC) is an optional addition for a more involved digitization chain. CCI explains that it can correct synchronization variation that may distort the picture. It adds equipment and workflow complexity, so it is not a requirement for every casual capture. CCI’s workflow and caveats are described in its Technical Bulletin 31 on digitizing VHS videotapes.

How to choose for your setup
- For a straightforward transfer: prioritize the right analog input, supported tape format, and confirmed compatibility with your computer. Either documented example may fit if its current requirements match your setup.
- If your VCR has S-Video: choose an adapter with S-Video input and connect that output; keep audio connected separately as the device guide specifies.
- If you use macOS or Linux: verify support for the exact adapter before buying. OBS recommends UVC-compatible devices for best compatibility on those systems, but that is not confirmation that a specific adapter supports them.
- If playback is unstable or the footage matters for preservation: consider whether a better playback deck or a TBC is warranted, and plan for the additional hardware and expertise.
A device’s maximum capture resolution does not create detail absent from a VHS source. The official product and workflow references establish features and setup considerations, but do not provide comparative tests of picture quality, reliability, or ease of use. There is therefore no evidence-based overall winner between these examples.
