For Vault Hunters 3rd Edition, start with the official sizing rule of 8 GB of base RAM plus 2 GB for every concurrent player. That means a two-player server needs about 12 GB of physical memory, while four players need about 16 GB. Keep the Java heap below the machine’s total RAM so the operating system and background services have room, run Java 17 with Forge on Minecraft 1.18.2 (unless the current pack documentation specifies a newer version), and place your JVM options in Forge’s user_jvm_args.txt.
Vault generation is considerably heavier than ordinary vanilla exploration: a vault is a temporary dimension with dense mob and block activity. Smooth play therefore depends on more than the advertised heap size. An SSD, a fast CPU core, conservative distance settings that you benchmark yourself, and a host with enough headroom during simultaneous vault runs all matter.

Quick sizing guide: how much RAM does Vault Hunters need?
The official Vault Hunters server guidance uses two formulas. The minimum is 6 GB of base memory plus 2 GB per concurrent player. The recommended starting point is 8 GB of base memory plus 2 GB per player. These figures describe the server machine’s available memory, not necessarily the Java heap you should assign with -Xmx.
| Concurrent players | Official minimum formula | Official recommended formula | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 GB total | 10 GB total | Suitable for testing or a lightly used private server |
| 2 | 10 GB total | 12 GB total | Allow extra headroom if both players enter vaults together |
| 3 | 12 GB total | 14 GB total | A sensible small-group target on an SSD |
| 4 | 14 GB total | 16 GB total | Use the higher figure when simultaneous vaults are common |
| 5 | 16 GB total | 18 GB total | Plan for additional capacity if more players may join |
The formula is a starting point, not a guarantee. A hosting guide recommends 10 GB simply to run a small Vault Hunters 3rd Edition server smoothly, while another community guide says 6–8 GB is required. A Docker image for the official 3rd Edition pack uses -Xms6144m -Xmx8192m by default. Those numbers are not directly contradictory: they may refer to different player counts, workloads, or the amount assigned to Java rather than the host’s total memory.

For a four- or five-player group, the official wiki’s own heap examples are -Xms8G -Xmx14G. That is consistent with the recommended 8 GB base plus 2 GB per player, while leaving several gigabytes outside the heap for the operating system, file cache, launch scripts, and other services. Do not allocate every gigabyte in a hosting plan to Java.
Confirm the pack and software versions first
The published server requirements identify Java 17, Minecraft 1.18.2, and Forge. The excerpt does not state a publication year, and modpack releases can change. Before creating a world, check the current Vault Hunters 3rd Edition server-install documentation and confirm the Minecraft, Forge, Java, and modpack versions shown there. A version mismatch can look like a memory or networking problem when it is actually a loader or mod incompatibility.
Verify Java
- Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime or JDK.
- Run
java -versionin the same account that will launch the server. - Confirm that the output reports version 17 and that the executable is 64-bit. A 32-bit runtime cannot address the memory sizes this pack needs.
Use the Forge-generated launch files
Run the Forge installer for the exact Minecraft version required by the pack, accept the server installation option, and start the server once so it creates its folders and asks you to accept the Minecraft EULA. Keep the Forge-generated program arguments (such as nogui) separate from the JVM arguments. Forge reads JVM options from user_jvm_args.txt; putting Java flags in the wrong section can cause them to be ignored or passed to the game as invalid arguments.

Choose a JVM heap without starving the host
-Xms sets the initial Java heap and -Xmx sets its maximum. One hosting guide recommends making them equal for steadier behavior, so a practical starting point is to reserve a fixed heap that fits inside the official total-RAM target, for example -Xms10G -Xmx10G on a machine with about 12 GB available for a two-player server. Leave the remaining memory to the operating system. If you follow the official examples with different initial and maximum values, retain the same headroom rule.

Starting values by group size
| Group | Suggested fixed heap starting point | Machine memory target | Why you might increase it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 player | 8–10 GB | 10 GB recommended by the formula | Large bases, automation, or frequent vault runs |
| 2 players | 10 GB | 12 GB recommended | Both players running separate vaults |
| 3 players | 12 GB | 14 GB recommended | Mob-heavy vaults and long sessions |
| 4–5 players | 14 GB | 16–18 GB recommended | Several active vault dimensions or additional server services |
These are starting allocations derived from the official formula and the published 4–5-player example, not a benchmark promise. If your operating system begins swapping, reduce the heap or move to a larger machine; adding heap to a host that is already paging usually makes lag worse.
G1 garbage collection flags
For Java 17, G1GC is a reasonable baseline for a large, long-running heap. A hosting guide suggests the following set:
-Xms8G
-Xmx8G
-XX:+UseG1GC
-XX:+ParallelRefProcEnabled
-XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=200
The same guide lists additional generation-sizing flags, and another hosting article uses a different G1 configuration. No official Vault Hunters page establishes one universally correct flag set. Start with the short set above, change one option at a time, and watch garbage-collection pauses and tick time before retaining more tuning flags. Do not copy a long flag bundle blindly: a value that helps one Java build or heap size can hurt another.
Editing user_jvm_args.txt
- Stop the server completely; never edit the file while Java is writing logs.
- Open
user_jvm_args.txtin the server directory. - Put one JVM option per line. Set your chosen equal
-Xmsand-Xmx, then add the conservative G1 options if needed. - Leave
noguiand other Forge or Minecraft program arguments in the launch script or the separate argument section. - Start the server and inspect the first lines of the log to verify the intended heap and Java version were accepted.
If the process exits immediately, remove newly added flags, restore the Forge-generated files, and test with only the two heap options. A typo, an option unsupported by the installed Java build, or placing a program argument in the JVM list can prevent startup.

Why vaults cause lag even when RAM looks sufficient
Vault Hunters can create far more temporary objects and mobs than a normal overworld session. Each active vault uses a temporary dimension, and a hosting blog estimates roughly 1–2 GB per active vault; that estimate is not confirmed by official documentation, so treat it as a warning about variability rather than a capacity rule. Two players entering separate vaults can produce a very different peak from two players building quietly in the same chunk.
- Concurrent vaults: size for the number of players who may be in vaults at the same time, not merely the number whitelisted.
- Mob and block activity: dense encounters and rapid generation create short-lived allocation spikes.
- Chunk generation: unexplored terrain stresses the CPU, storage, and memory together.
- World saves and backups: disk contention can look like tick lag even when heap usage is low.
Ask players to avoid starting several new vaults while a backup or large world-generation operation is running. If lag occurs only during vault generation and disappears afterward, profile that peak rather than raising the heap without limit.
Storage and CPU settings that matter
Use an SSD
The official guidance calls for an SSD for faster world loading and at least 5 GB of free disk space. Five gigabytes is a minimum free-space figure, not a comfortable capacity for a growing multiplayer world. Reserve substantially more space for region files, logs, backups, crash reports, and future pack updates. Keep the active world and Java process on the SSD rather than placing the world on an SSD while backups or swap consume the same slow disk.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Prioritize single-thread CPU performance
Minecraft’s main server tick is sensitive to single-thread speed. More cores help with the operating system, file compression, and ancillary tasks, but adding many slow virtual cores does not replace a fast main thread. On shared hosting, noisy neighbors can produce inconsistent tick times even when the advertised RAM is adequate. If the same heap performs well at quiet times and poorly when the host is busy, test a different CPU tier or provider before changing every JVM flag.

View distance and simulation distance: test instead of copying a “best” number
No official Vault Hunters recommendation for view-distance or simulation-distance was found. Third-party snippets disagree, and their pages do not establish a documented pack standard. Treat both values as workload controls that must be measured on your hardware.
- Stop the server and back up
server.properties. - Change only one distance value at a time, using a conservative test value suitable for your host.
- Have the expected number of players load new terrain, visit a base with machines, and enter vaults.
- Record server tick time, player-reported delay, memory use, and disk activity during the busiest five to ten minutes.
- Restore the previous value if generation or combat becomes unresponsive, then test the other setting independently.
view-distance controls how many world chunks the server sends to clients. simulation-distance controls how far entities and block activity continue to tick. Lowering either can reduce CPU and network work, but it also reduces how far players can see or how far farms operate. There is no single value that is “best” without knowing your CPU, player count, and play style.
Automating properties with Docker
The Docker image documentation says that server.properties keys can be supplied through environment variables named after those keys. This is useful for repeatable deployments: keep the values in your compose or container configuration, document the tested settings, and change one variable per benchmark. Verify the image’s exact variable naming and precedence rules before assuming an environment value replaced a file value.
Installation and first-run checklist
- Confirm the current Vault Hunters 3rd Edition release and its required Minecraft, Forge, and Java versions.
- Provision the official RAM target: 8 GB base plus 2 GB per concurrent player, with additional capacity if several vaults will run simultaneously.
- Use a 64-bit Java 17 runtime and an SSD with at least 5 GB free; plan more for worlds and backups.
- Install Forge for the pack’s exact Minecraft version and copy the server pack files without mixing files from another release.
- Start once, accept the EULA, stop cleanly, and let Forge create its normal launch files.
- Set equal
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues inuser_jvm_args.txt, leaving memory for the operating system. - Start with the short G1GC baseline only if needed; add other flags only after observing a measurable problem.
- Set an initial distance configuration, then benchmark normal exploration, base activity, and simultaneous vaults.
- Schedule backups outside the busiest play periods and monitor free disk space.
- Record the pack version, Java version, heap, distance values, and player count so you can reproduce a good configuration after updates.
Diagnosing common Vault Hunters server problems
The server crashes with an out-of-memory error
Check whether the error is Java heap exhaustion or the operating system killing the process. If Java reports heap exhaustion, confirm that the installed machine has more RAM than -Xmx, close unrelated services, and increase the host’s total memory before making a large heap jump. If the operating system is out of memory, reduce -Xmx or move to a larger host; assigning nearly all physical RAM to Java leaves no safety margin.
Best Value
Players report freezes when entering vaults
Compare the timing with chunk generation, simultaneous vault entries, and backups. Check disk latency and CPU saturation, not just the memory graph. An SSD and a faster CPU core can fix this pattern more effectively than another gigabyte of heap. Test a lower distance setting after restoring a backup of server.properties.
Ticks slow down while memory remains available
Available RAM does not prove that the main thread is keeping up. Look for a saturated CPU core, excessive entity activity, world generation, or a busy storage device. Lower simulation distance experimentally, reduce simultaneous heavy operations, and investigate mod or machine activity in the affected area.
The server will not start after changing JVM arguments
Remove the newest flags and launch with only the known-good Forge files and heap options. Confirm Java 17, check spelling and capitalization, and ensure nogui was not placed in user_jvm_args.txt. Reintroduce options one at a time after a successful start.

| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| RAM control | You choose physical RAM and reserve operating-system headroom | Plan labels may describe allocated RAM; verify whether it is a hard limit and whether overhead is included |
| CPU consistency | Depends on your hardware and background tasks | Depends on the provider’s CPU allocation and noisy-neighbor policy |
| Storage | You can select an SSD and control backup placement | Confirm SSD or NVMe storage, disk quotas, and backup behavior |
| Maintenance | You handle Java, Forge, updates, firewall, and recovery | The host may automate backups and updates, but you still must match pack versions |
| Scaling | Add physical memory or migrate the machine | Usually easier to resize, but verify the new plan’s CPU and disk limits as well as RAM |
Hosting-company figures are often higher than the official wiki formula. That is not proof that the official minimum is wrong; it reflects a desire to cover bursts, overhead, and support cases. Use the official formula as the baseline, then size upward when your measured peak or simultaneous-vault schedule requires it.
A repeatable tuning method
- Establish a baseline: record Java version, pack version, heap, player count, distance values, CPU usage, memory usage, disk latency, and tick behavior.
- Reproduce the workload: test the same number of players exploring, operating bases, and entering vaults together.
- Change one variable: adjust heap, a distance value, or host resources—not all three at once.
- Test for a full session: short starts can hide the allocation and garbage-collection behavior that appears after repeated vaults.
- Keep the winning configuration: document the values and back up the working files before updating the pack.
The goal is stable tick time and responsive combat, not the largest possible heap or the lowest possible distance. A configuration that leaves operating-system headroom and survives the busiest expected vault session is better than one that looks efficient during an idle night.
