It is best treated as a hobby project—not a dependable NAS or a critical, always-on server—because Android may restrict background apps, storage access is limited, and a used phone’s condition is uncertain.
What an old Android phone can realistically do
Termux provides an Android terminal and Linux environment, making it a practical starting point for command-line experiments and modest services. Termux Services adds runit scripts for enabling and starting services, but it does not guarantee that Android or a particular phone vendor will keep them running continuously. Think in terms of a shell-accessible development box, a test endpoint, a small personal API or static site, or a script on your home network. Keep the workload modest: a phone’s CPU, network, storage, and background behavior are not a basis for promising NAS-like throughput or production reliability.

Plan for Android background limits and recovery
A server process is useful only while it can run and recover. Android has background-work restrictions and scheduling mechanisms, and behavior can differ by Android version and device vendor. Before relying on a service, decide whether it needs to run while the screen is off, how you will notice an interruption, and how you will restart it after the phone reboots or Android stops the app. Android’s documentation explains background execution limits.
Termux Services can organize service startup through runit scripts; that is process management, not an uptime guarantee. Avoid depending on an old handset for anything whose outage would affect essential access, security, or household operations.

Handle files and removable storage carefully
Android apps cannot freely read one another’s private directories. Termux can request access to shared or external storage, but that access is permission-based and shared storage has filesystem limitations. Follow the Termux documentation for storage setup, and do not assume the app has ordinary Linux access to every Android folder.

A compatible phone may use a removable drive through a USB OTG adapter, but check the handset’s connector and OTG support first. Attaching a drive can add space for a modest project; it does not turn the phone into a robust NAS or remove Android’s storage boundaries.

Check the phone before choosing software
- Android version: Check the version and whether the apps you plan to use support it.
- Battery condition: An old or swollen battery is a poor foundation for a device expected to stay powered. Do not leave a damaged battery in service.
- Free storage: Allow room for the operating system, Termux packages, service data, and any files you synchronize.
- Network access: Confirm the phone can connect to the home network in the way your intended service requires.
- Connector and OTG: Verify these before buying or planning around removable storage.
- Downtime tolerance: Choose a use where a missed run or interruption is harmless; do not make this the only copy of important data.
When a phone server is the wrong choice
Use a different device for a critical 24/7 service, a dependable shared file store, or a sole backup target. A phone may be worthwhile because it is already on hand and makes experimentation accessible, but there is no basis here to promise particular power savings, speed, uptime, or reliability. Those outcomes depend on the specific phone, software, network, and workload.
