For most VHS-to-computer transfers, the Diamond VC500 and Elgato Video Capture are the two clearest options to compare. Both accept the analog connections commonly found on VCRs, including composite RCA and S-Video. Choose based on the ports on your VCR, your computer’s compatibility with the exact device, and whether you prefer configuring capture software or using a bundled guided application. The available product documentation does not establish a universal image-quality winner.
Which USB capture device should you choose?
A USB capture device takes analog video and audio from a VCR and sends them to a computer for recording. It does not play tapes itself: you need a working VCR, matching cables, a compatible computer, and capture software.

| Diamond VC500 | USB 2.0; RCA and S-Video inputs. Diamond documents a workflow using OBS. | Someone comfortable configuring a capture program. | Confirm operating-system support and software availability for the exact device revision. |
| Diamond VC500SE | Diamond describes a USB 2.0 device with RCA and S-Video inputs and Windows 11/10 support. | A Windows user considering this separately named variant. | The product page describes it as Windows-only; check the current listing and included accessories. |
| Elgato Video Capture | Composite RCA and S-Video; Elgato says its capture application supports Mac and Windows. Its quick-start guide also shows SCART connection through an adapter. | Someone who values a bundled, guided application. | Verify compatibility with your computer and operating system. A 2026 buying guide describes it as a higher-cost option, but live prices were not checked. |
Digital Camera World named Elgato its overall pick in a 2026 buying guide, citing convenience and bundled software. That is the publication’s editorial judgment, not a controlled comparison of capture quality or a guarantee for every tape and VCR: Digital Camera World’s buying guide.
Check your VCR’s outputs before choosing
Look at the VCR’s output panel, not just the cables you happen to have. The usual composite RCA connection has a yellow video plug and red/white audio plugs. Some VCRs also have S-Video, a separate video connector. Choose an input the capture device supports and obtain a cable that matches both ends. Elgato’s guide documents a SCART adapter option; confirm that the adapter and connection suit your equipment.

Use S-Video only if both the VCR and capture device have compatible S-Video connections. The cited product materials document supported inputs but do not provide a controlled comparison showing how much better one connection looks with the same tape and equipment.
What you need for a transfer
- A VCR that can play the tape reliably, with working video and audio outputs.
- A USB capture device compatible with the VCR’s output connections.
- A computer and capture software supported by the exact device and operating system.
- Enough storage space for the recording, plus time to let the tape play through while the computer captures it.
If you do not have a working VCR or a computer suitable for capture, a transfer service may be more practical. Compare any service’s geography, handling practices, output formats, and privacy terms before handing over personal recordings.

How to connect a VCR and record playback
- Connect the VCR’s outputs to the capture device’s inputs. Match the video and audio connections. Diamond’s setup guide specifically says to use the VCR’s output ports, not its inputs.
- Connect the capture device to the computer’s USB port. Diamond recommends a rear USB port on desktop computers.
- Open compatible capture software. Elgato documents use of its bundled application; Diamond’s guide shows how to add a video capture source in OBS.
- Check the incoming picture and sound, then start recording in the software. Start tape playback and let it run for the portion you want to preserve.
- Stop and check the saved file. Confirm that it contains both picture and sound before moving on to another tape.
Diamond’s OBS guide gives 720×480 at 30 fps as an NTSC setup value. Its older setup sheet lists nominal capture settings of 720×480 at 30 fps for NTSC and 720×576 at 25 fps for PAL. Treat these as device/setup documentation, not a promise that a capture will have that level of detail or improve the tape’s source quality; confirm behavior with current hardware and software. See the Diamond OBS setup guide and Diamond setup sheet.
Software, compatibility, and product revisions
Do not assume that similarly named devices have identical support. Diamond lists the VC500 and VC500SE separately; the VC500SE page describes Windows 11/10 support, while the VC500 setup guide documents an OBS workflow. Elgato says its Video Capture software supports Mac and Windows. Before purchase, check the current support information for your exact model, computer, operating system, and software version. The cited materials do not establish current driver behavior across every computer configuration.

Preserving tapes and choosing your timing
Elgato notes that magnetic tape, including VHS, has a limited life and deteriorates over time. Its cited product material does not quantify how long a particular tape will remain playable, so the condition and history of each tape matter. If recordings are important, avoid unnecessary playback and make a digital copy while the tape and playback equipment still work.

When the choice is not obvious
- Choose based on the computer workflow: Elgato is the more guided documented route if you want its bundled Mac/Windows application; Diamond’s guide suits users willing to configure OBS.
- Choose based on the VCR: verify matching RCA or S-Video connections before comparing software features.
- Do not buy on an assumed image-quality ranking: the product pages establish inputs and workflows, not a head-to-head result using the same VCR, tape, and settings.
- Check seller and listing details: Diamond’s guide recommends buying VC500 devices through Diamond’s website or its official Amazon store. Treat this as the manufacturer’s purchasing guidance and confirm the listing is current.
