What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The best starting settings for PS4 gaming are your TV’s Game picture mode, the correct HDMI input and signal option, and the PS4’s automatic video-output settings. There is no dependable set of brightness, contrast, color, or sharpness numbers that works on every TV. Use the sequence below, then make restrained adjustments for your specific TV, room, and the game’s SDR or HDR image.
Start with Game mode, then check the signal path
- Select Game picture mode on the TV. This is a practical first choice when responsive controls matter. PlayStation advises considering input latency when choosing a gaming TV and notes that many TVs offer Game Mode to reduce it; Sony also recommends Game mode to reduce input lag. The effect varies by TV, and the mode may change or disable features, including HDR. Neither source establishes one latency figure that applies to all TVs. PlayStation’s PS4 Pro guidance and Sony support guidance describe the recommendation.
- Use an HDMI input that supports the output you want. Check the TV manual to identify HDR-capable or 4K-capable ports and enable the corresponding enhanced-signal option for that input. Menu names differ by manufacturer. On Samsung QLED TVs, for example, the setting is called “Input Signal Plus”; it is not a universal label. Samsung’s setup instructions cover its own TVs.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV when setting up HDR. PlayStation specifies a Premium HDMI cable for HDR and advises connecting the console directly to the TV rather than routing it through a receiver or switch box for HDR output. Check the cable and devices you already have before buying anything. PlayStation’s HDR setup guide lists the requirements.
Set up HDR and video output on the PS4
All PS4 consoles support HDR output; 4K output is a PS4 Pro feature. PlayStation’s HDR requirements include a 2K or 4K HDR TV that supports HDR10, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. HDR availability also depends on the individual game or streaming app.

- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings.
- Set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration. If a game has its own HDR calibration, use that too; its controls apply to that game.
- Check Video Output Information in the same Video Output Settings area to see whether the connected display is identified as HDR-compatible.
For PS4 Pro resolution, leave resolution on Automatic unless you have a reason to choose a supported mode. Automatic selects the highest available resolution according to the display and content. Supported manual choices include 2160p YUV420 and 2160p RGB. Some games also have an in-game setting that must be enabled for 4K output. See PlayStation’s PS4 Pro 4K guidance.

TV menus, panels, firmware, room lighting, and the incoming signal all affect how picture controls behave. SDR and HDR may also use separate picture settings. The cited guidance does not establish universal numeric targets for brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, tint, black level, or local dimming. Keep the TV in the Game mode you plan to use while adjusting its other controls, and consult the manual for the exact model and input.

- 4K TV gaming PS4 Pro outputs gameplay to your 4K TV. Games such as Red Dead Redemption 2 are optimized to look stunningly sharp and detailed when played on a 4K TV with PS4 Pro.
- More HD power Turn on the Boost mode to give PS4 games access to the increased power of PS4 Pro. For HD TV enhanced games, players can benefit from increased image clarity, faster frame rates and more. HDR technology With an HDR TV, compatible PS4 games display an unbelievably vibrant and lifelike range of colors.
After the PS4’s HDR adjustment, make small TV-side changes only if the image gives you a specific reason: for example, dark detail is hard to see or bright highlights lose detail. Recheck the game’s own HDR calibration after material changes. Game mode is a starting preset for responsiveness, not a guarantee that every secondary picture control is ideal.
Leave RGB Range on its default unless you see a mismatch
The PS4 user guide advises changing RGB Range only when an HDMI device does not send RGB-range information correctly. Avoid blanket advice to always select Full or Limited: the PS4 and TV’s range or black-level settings need to agree. Change the setting only when you are diagnosing a visible mismatch, and check the TV manual for the matching control. The PS4 user guide’s RGB Range page explains the condition for changing it.

Troubleshoot HDR or 4K that does not appear
If HDR is not detected
- Check that the specific HDMI port supports HDR and enable the TV’s HDR or enhanced-signal setting for that input.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the TV for HDR setup, then set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
- Confirm HDR support in the PS4’s Video Output Information screen and check that the game or streaming app supports HDR.
- For a Samsung QLED, enable Input Signal Plus for the HDMI input in use, then check the PS4 settings and run Adjust HDR. Other brands may use different names and steps.
If PS4 Pro does not output 4K
- Confirm that the TV input in use supports 4K and that the display supports 4K/60Hz.
- Check every device in the HDMI chain; a receiver, switch, or cable that does not support the intended signal can prevent it from reaching the TV. PlayStation specifies a Premium HDMI cable for PS4 Pro 4K setup.
- Use Automatic or a supported 2160p option, and check whether the game requires its own 4K setting.
- If the display does not support 4K/60Hz, PlayStation says the signal may be scaled down to 2K/60Hz.

How to judge whether a setup is working
- Responsiveness: controls feel immediate enough in Game mode for your preferences; there is no universal latency benchmark established here.
- Signal compatibility: the TV identifies HDR when expected, and a PS4 Pro can use the intended 4K output through the entire HDMI chain.
- Image presentation: after calibration, you can distinguish important dark detail and highlights without making unnecessary changes to unrelated controls.
- Console capability: a standard PS4 can output HDR but not 4K; PS4 Pro adds 4K output.
