There is no verified SS14 Tartarus winner yet. At the latest pre-launch checkpoint (October 13, 2026), Selena 2 is the safest provisional all-round choice because the available tier list places it highly for both starter and geared endgame play in SS13. Erika 1, Youga 2, and Thea 3 are the other low-gear starters worth considering. Treat all four as inherited SS13 recommendations, not confirmed Tartarus rankings.
Tartarus is scheduled for October 15, 2026, at 7 PM PDT (October 16 at 10:00 GMT+8 in the game database listing). New Netherrealm encounters, Followers, active and support skills, and Youga’s new trait can change which builds clear fastest. Start with a build that matches your budget and preferred input style, then re-check its map clear, boss damage, and survivability after SS14 goes live.

What you can safely choose before SS14 Tartarus launches
The most defensible single recommendation is Selena 2. The pre-launch MUSA SS14 tier list, updated October 11, 2026, ranks Selena 2 highly in both its SS13 starter and endgame categories and calls it the safest pick while SS14 data is unavailable. That is a useful starting signal, not proof of Tartarus performance: the list explicitly carries over end-of-SS13 rankings while waiting for player results from the new season.

If your priority is early progression rather than one general-purpose answer, compare Selena 2 with Erika 1, Youga 2, and Thea 3. The same source groups these four as SS13 starters that could progress quickly with little gear. It characterizes Erika 1 as the fastest early currency-farming option and Youga 2 as a budget boss killer. Those descriptions are the tier list’s editorial judgments, not measured clear-time studies.
#1 Best Overall
Do not announce any build as the “best SS14 build” before actual Tartarus play data exists. The season adds a Netherrealm activity, a Followers growth system, new skills, and Youga’s trait The Ultimate One. Any of those changes can alter damage patterns, target priorities, gearing breakpoints, or the value of fast pack clear compared with boss damage.
Why Tartarus may change the ranking
The official Tartarus preview describes a Netherrealm board in which players capture Caged Beasts and fight prison Riots for rewards. It also introduces Followers that fight beside the player in Netherrealm content: Wolf, Rat, Lion, and Mammoth. The preview announces additional active and support skills, stating, “A wave of new Active Skills and Support Skills is here, opening up more build paths.” These are announced features; their practical effect on build rankings was not established before launch.
The SS14 patch notes contain broad gameplay and interface changes, including controller-related improvements. Because skill, item, and control details can change with the live patch, use the current SS14 notes to confirm an exact setup rather than copying an older skill link or assuming an SS13 interaction still works.
There is also a time-zone discrepancy worth making explicit. The official season page advertises October 15 at 7 PM PDT. The TLIDB season listing gives October 16 at 10:00 GMT+8, which is the corresponding local time. Check the in-game countdown for your region before planning a launch-hour session.
Provisional build comparison
The table separates what is supported by the pre-launch source from what remains unmeasured. “High” or “low” here describes the source’s category or editorial characterization, not a laboratory benchmark.
| Build | Best use before launch | Gear entry | Map clear | Boss focus | Input and playstyle | SS14 confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selena 2 | Safest all-round starter and eventual generalist | Low-gear starter listed; can remain an endgame option | Not measured; ranked highly in the source’s starter and endgame categories | Not measured | Confirm the exact trait and skill package; hero name alone is insufficient | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Erika 1 | Fast early currency farming | Low-gear starter | Source favors early farming; no numerical clear time stated | Not established | Choose if rapid routine mapping matters more than a documented boss niche | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Youga 2 | Budget boss killing | Low-gear starter | Not established | Source calls it a budget boss killer | Re-check interactions after The Ultimate One and the new skills arrive | Most exposed to SS14 trait changes |
| Thea 3 | Low-gear progression alternative | Low-gear starter | Not established | Not established | Match the exact trait and guide instructions to your preferred controls | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Rosa 2 | Geared endgame | Investment expected; warned as a weaker starter | Strong in the source’s SS13 endgame category | Not separately measured | Better considered after a character has established gear | Do not treat as a fresh-season starter |
| Gemma’s Frostbitten Heart | Geared endgame | Investment expected | Strong in the source’s SS13 endgame category | Not separately measured | Requires the exact trait and item package from a current guide | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Bing 1 | Geared endgame | Investment expected; warned as a weaker starter | Strong in the source’s SS13 endgame category | Not separately measured | Delay until your budget supports its scaling plan | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Iris 2 | Geared endgame | Investment expected | Strong in the source’s SS13 endgame category | Not separately measured | Verify trait, required items, and input demand before switching | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
| Sage | Geared endgame | Investment expected | Strong in the source’s SS13 endgame category | Not separately measured | Use a current version-specific guide | Provisional SS13 evidence only |
No reviewed source provides a defined sample, measured clear time, or other named performance statistic. A tier position is therefore not a percentage advantage, seconds-per-map claim, or guarantee of a Netherrealm reward rate.
How to choose among the four low-gear starters
Choose Selena 2 for the least-regret first character
Selena 2 is the sensible default when you do not yet know whether Tartarus will emphasize broad pack clearing, durable encounters, or repeated boss fights. Its unusual advantage in the available evidence is breadth: it appears in both starter and geared-endgame categories. That does not prove it tops either category in SS14, but it reduces the risk of choosing a build that must be abandoned as soon as content becomes harder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore copying a guide, verify the exact Selena trait number, core mechanic, mandatory items, and whether its skill rotation expects manual aiming, channeling, or automated triggers. Torchlight: Infinite gives heroes multiple traits, and the trait number can materially change the way the same hero plays.
Choose Erika 1 for an early farming loop
Erika 1 is the targeted choice when your launch plan is to move through ordinary content, accumulate currency, and improve gear quickly. The tier list’s “fastest early currency farming” description is qualitative. It does not establish a measured currency-per-hour figure or guarantee that the same route will remain optimal in Tartarus.
Rank #2
- Randomization – Game level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure will always be unique.
- Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. With an intuitive interface, players can dive right in!
- Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character, choosing from 3 main Classes: The Destroyer, The Alchemist, or The Vanquisher.
- Pets – choose a pet to accompany your character. Pets can level up along with the player; they can also fight, carry items, and perform helpful tasks.
Use Erika 1 if you are comfortable prioritizing routine map efficiency over a documented boss specialty. Reassess once you know whether Caged Beasts and prison Riots reward speed, single-target damage, or a balance of both.
Choose Youga 2 for a budget bossing plan
Youga 2 is the clearest provisional choice for players who expect early walls to be bosses rather than map packs. The source labels it a budget boss killer, making it attractive for a player who wants to spend little gear investment while learning seasonal encounters.

Do not assume the SS13 Youga 2 trait, support links, or rotation are the correct SS14 setup. Compare the live trait text, skill tags, and item requirements after the patch before investing scarce currency.
Choose Thea 3 as a low-gear alternative
Thea 3 is listed with Selena 2, Erika 1, and Youga 2 as an SS13 starter that progressed quickly with little gear. The available evidence does not assign it a distinct farming or bossing advantage. Pick it when a current guide’s mechanic fits your preferred movement, targeting, or defensive habits better than the other three.
Do not confuse starter strength with endgame scaling
The pre-launch SS13 endgame list also names Rosa 2, Gemma’s Frostbitten Heart, Bing 1, Iris 2, and Sage among the strongest builds by player data. That list answers a different question from “what should I start on day one?”
Rosa 2 and Bing 1 are explicitly cited as examples of builds that can scale well later while being weaker starters. Their inclusion in an endgame category should not be read as a recommendation to use them for a fresh Tartarus character. A build can require expensive items, a particular hero trait, or several completed progression steps before its damage and defenses become reliable.
When reading any endgame guide, look for five statements before committing:
- The intended stage: campaign, early Netherrealm, or fully geared endgame.
- The core mechanic and every required item, rather than a vague hero name.
- The budget at which the build becomes functional.
- Known weaknesses, such as poor single-target damage or fragile defenses.
- Common misunderstandings about traits, support links, or alternate versions.
These are the minimum fields recommended by the Torchlight: Infinite Wiki build archive. A guide missing them may still be useful, but it cannot tell you whether its results apply to a new character, a geared farmer, or a specialized boss setup.
A practical launch procedure
- Confirm the season and patch. Use the in-game countdown and the current SS14 patch notes. The official schedule is October 15 at 7 PM PDT, with October 16 at 10:00 GMT+8 shown by the database listing.
- Select the progression target. Decide whether your first milestone is campaign completion, early Netherrealm access, currency farming, or boss progression. Do not use an endgame ranking to answer a starter question.
- Pick one provisional starter. Use Selena 2 for the safest general choice, Erika 1 for early farming, Youga 2 for budget bossing, or Thea 3 when its exact mechanic suits you best.
- Check the trait number. Confirm that the guide’s hero and trait match your selection. A hero name without a trait number is not a complete build specification.
- Record required items and links. Separate mandatory items from luxury upgrades. If a guide cannot identify its minimum budget, treat its endgame claims as non-transferable to a new character.
- Test the control pattern. Spend a short session checking movement, aiming, channeling, trigger timing, and defensive activation before buying expensive gear.
- Keep a fallback route. Save currency until you know whether Tartarus rewards broad clear, boss damage, or both. The new Followers and skills may make a previously secondary mechanic valuable.
How to validate a build once Tartarus is live
Replace the provisional label only after you can observe the build in the actual season. A useful check separates progression stages instead of calling one setup “fast” in every context.
Rank #3
- 2-5 players - 40 minute playing time - Ages 10+
- Early Netherrealm: Can the character enter and clear normal encounters on the stated starter budget?
- Map packs: Does the build move through ordinary groups without excessive aiming, channel downtime, or backtracking?
- Prison Riots and bosses: Can it finish priority targets before defensive resources or encounter timers become a problem?
- Caged Beasts: Does the build handle capture-related movement and target switching without losing its main damage cycle?
- Followers: Do Wolf, Rat, Lion, or Mammoth contributions change which support skills, defenses, or positioning choices are worthwhile?
- Budget breakpoints: What changes after the first meaningful item upgrade, and which upgrades are merely luxury scaling?
- Survivability: Does the build remain consistent at the difficulty you actually intend to farm, rather than only in a low-risk demonstration?
Record map clear and boss results separately. A setup that deletes packs but stalls on Riots is a farmer, not an all-round Netherrealm build; a durable boss killer may be inefficient for routine currency runs. This distinction matters more than a single tier label.

Trait selection is not cosmetic. The tier-list author warns that different traits on the same hero change playstyle, so “Selena,” “Youga,” or “Thea” without a number can point to materially different builds. Read the trait text, damage tags, resource behavior, and trigger conditions in the current client.
A player-authored Youga 1 guide from MinMaxedARPG, published October 12 and updated October 13, 2026, is an example of how to state scope: it labels its routes cheap-budget and beginner difficulty and discusses progression toward Traveler 7. That makes it useful as a specific pre-launch route, but it does not show that Youga 1 is stronger than Selena 2, Erika 1, Youga 2, or Thea 3. Treat its stage, budget, and difficulty labels as part of the recommendation.
Do not transplant support links, items, or skill names from an older season without checking the SS14 notes. The patch includes broad gameplay and UI changes, and the season preview adds new active and support skills. A guide that has not been updated should be treated as a starting hypothesis, not a final shopping list.
Low-input and controller considerations
Some new players specifically want an “auto-bomber” style: no more than left click plus one button and little aiming. That is a legitimate accessibility and comfort requirement, but it is separate from clear-speed ranking. Ask the guide author how much manual aiming, channeling, dodge timing, and target selection the build requires before choosing it.
Recommended Free Tools
Controller play is available as an option on PC and mobile according to a player discussion, and the official SS14 notes include controller-related interface improvements. Availability and mapping can vary by platform and input device. A controller may make a preferred build more comfortable; there is no evidence that it improves damage, survivability, or Netherrealm rewards.
What remains unknown
Before launch, no reviewed source establishes a numerical clear-time comparison, a measured currency rate, or a statistically defined sample for these builds. The available tier list supplies ranked categories and qualitative descriptions, while the season materials describe features rather than results.
The open questions are specific: whether Tartarus encounters favor broad clear or boss damage, how much Followers contribute to each hero, whether The Ultimate One changes Youga’s early budget curve, and which new support skills become mandatory. Until those questions are answered in live play, the responsible recommendation is to start with a flexible build, preserve currency, and update the choice when actual SS14 snapshots distinguish map clear, bossing, and budget stage.
