Best TLC SSD Alternatives to QLC for Sustained Large File Transfers

A TLC SSD is a sensible alternative class to compare for repeated large writes, but sustained performance depends on exact capacity, cache behavior, cooling, and the rest of the system.

For repeated large-file writes, compare TLC SSDs with QLC drives—but choose by long-write results for the exact model and capacity, not by a headline speed. QLC stores four bits per cell, while TLC stores three; QLC can write more slowly once its fast cache is exhausted. Samsung’s 990 PRO is one TLC NVMe drive worth comparing, but its published maximum sequential-write speed does not establish its post-cache rate.

Why QLC performance can change during a large transfer

QLC NAND stores four bits per cell; TLC stores three. The denser QLC cell requires more precise voltage control during writing, which can make QLC writes slower, as discussed in AnandTech’s review of the 8TB Samsung 870 QVO and Sabrent Rocket Q (AnandTech review). This is a technology tendency, not a guarantee that every QLC drive will underperform every TLC drive in every workload.

Many SSDs use a fast cache for short bursts. A transfer that outlasts that cache may behave differently from a brief benchmark or a manufacturer’s “up to” sequential-write figure. PCWorld’s Addlink S22 review considers results across different data-set sizes, illustrating why workload size matters; that review’s findings apply to that model, not to SSDs as a whole (PCWorld review).

How to choose an SSD for repeated large writes

  • Look for long sequential-write tests. Prefer independent results that show performance as the workload continues past the fast-cache phase. Separate post-cache results from short-burst benchmarks and peak specifications.
  • Match the tested capacity. Cache behavior and performance may differ by capacity. A result for one capacity does not establish how another capacity of the same model will behave.
  • Check NAND type, endurance, and warranty. TLC is a reasonable class to investigate for write-heavy transfers, but the NAND label alone does not predict a drive’s reliability. Compare the exact SKU’s endurance rating and warranty terms.
  • Confirm platform and physical fit. Check the drive’s form factor, interface, motherboard or system support, and any heatsink clearance. A drive’s maximum speed is useful only if the host can support it.
  • Account for heat and the full transfer path. Sustained results depend on cooling, workload, host, and source and destination devices. For external workflows, the enclosure and host connection can also limit transfer speed.
  • Compare price per usable terabyte. Balance current price and capacity against the amount of data you need to move; a faster specification may not justify a higher cost for your particular workload.

A TLC example to compare: Samsung 990 PRO

Samsung’s 990 PRO is a product example, not a verified sustained-write winner. Samsung’s datasheet identifies Samsung V-NAND TLC, an M.2 2280 form factor, and a PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 / NVMe 2.0 interface. It lists maximum sequential speeds of 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, measured under Samsung’s specified test conditions and using its caching technology (Samsung 990 PRO datasheet, revision 2.0). The 6,900 MB/s figure is a maximum sequential-write specification, not a stated post-cache sustained rate.

The same datasheet rates endurance at 600 TBW for 1TB, 1,200 TBW for 2TB, and 2,400 TBW for 4TB, and lists a five-year limited warranty. TBW is the product’s endurance rating, not a prediction of how long a particular user’s drive will last. Check the warranty terms for the exact SKU. Samsung’s launch announcement also identifies the 990 PRO as using 3-bit TLC NAND (Samsung launch announcement).

What to check before buying for an external workflow

If the SSD will sit in an enclosure, the enclosure and connection between it and the host are part of the performance chain. Confirm that they support the interface and speed your workload needs, and remember that the source drive and host can also constrain a copy. No particular enclosure or external-transfer result is established here, so assess the complete setup rather than assuming an internal-drive specification will translate directly to an external transfer.

What the available product figures can—and cannot—tell you

The 990 PRO’s published peak speed, TLC NAND, interface, and TBW ratings make it a concrete model to compare against alternatives. They do not settle which capacity or model is best for your budget and platform, because the datasheet does not provide a directly comparable post-cache sustained-write rate. For that decision, seek a long-write test of the exact capacity under a setup and workload relevant to yours.
