Thunderbird’s official FAQ says its iPhone and iPad app is still in development. If you need an email app now, Apple Mail is the simplest place to start for standard accounts, Spark is the listed option for bringing several providers into one inbox, and Proton Mail fits people who use Proton’s email service. Outlook and Gmail are additional candidates, but the right choice depends on your email provider and setup needs.

Is Thunderbird available for iPhone and iPad?

Thunderbird’s official FAQ says, “Thunderbird for iOS development (for iPhone and iPad) is in progress!” Its roadmap and development blog also describe work underway. Those sources establish development, not a release date or current App Store availability. Check Thunderbird’s official materials for the latest status before choosing an app.

Which alternative should you choose?

App Best fit What the cited material establishes
Apple Mail People who want a standard built-in iPhone or iPad app Apple documents automatic and manual account setup, including IMAP and POP configuration.
Spark People who want several supported accounts together Its App Store listing says it supports iPhone and iPad and combines Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, and IMAP accounts in a unified inbox.
Proton Mail People who use Proton Mail Proton offers an iOS app for its email service. Proton describes Bridge for connecting Proton Mail to desktop clients.
Outlook or Gmail People who prefer one of these provider apps or workflows Apple’s App Store editorial page recommends both. Google documents using IMAP to access Gmail in other email clients.

Apple Mail: a straightforward starting point

Apple Mail is a sensible first try if you want an app already on your iPhone or iPad and your email provider supports a setup route Apple documents. Apple’s account setup instructions cover automatic setup as well as manual configuration, including IMAP and POP.

If automatic setup does not work, manual setup may require details from your email provider. Confirm the correct incoming and outgoing server settings with that provider rather than guessing. Apple Mail’s basic setup support does not establish that it matches Thunderbird feature for feature.

Spark: several providers in one inbox

Spark is worth considering when your main goal is seeing multiple accounts together. Its App Store listing identifies iPhone and iPad support and says it can put Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, and IMAP accounts into one unified inbox.

That listing supports a compatibility and unified-inbox comparison; it does not establish Spark’s privacy practices, exact current pricing, or parity with Thunderbird’s features. Check the listing and the account setup requirements for your providers before switching.

Proton Mail: best suited to Proton users

Proton offers an iOS app for its Proton Mail service. It is the direct option to consider if you already use Proton Mail and want its email workflow on an iPhone or iPad. Proton’s page about Proton Mail Bridge describes connecting Proton Mail to desktop email clients such as Thunderbird or Apple Mail. Bridge is not evidence that Proton’s iOS app works as a general-purpose client for arbitrary IMAP accounts.

Outlook and Gmail: provider-focused alternatives

Outlook and Gmail are additional candidates: Apple’s App Store editorial page includes both among its recommended email apps. Choose based on the account and workflow you need, and check the provider’s current setup guidance.

For Gmail in another email client, Google documents access through IMAP and names Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird among the clients that can read Gmail this way. See Google’s current instructions for checking Gmail in other email clients before configuring an account; requirements can depend on current Google account settings.

How to decide without assuming Thunderbird feature parity

  • Start with your email provider. Verify that the app supports your actual account and, if you are configuring it manually, the protocol and settings your provider allows.
  • Choose the inbox arrangement you want. Spark explicitly advertises a unified inbox for several listed account types. The cited Proton material supports a Proton-centered choice, not a claim that it consolidates arbitrary accounts.
  • Factor in setup and ecosystem. Apple documents account setup in Mail; Gmail users can consult Google’s IMAP instructions. For other providers, follow their current setup requirements.
  • Check availability and pricing directly. The cited materials do not establish current pricing, comparative privacy, performance, accessibility, or feature parity. Review current App Store listings and official provider pages for details relevant to your decision.
