The most reliable Team Fortress 2 server setup is a small, layered stack: install MetaMod:Source in the server’s tf/ directory, install SourceMod beside it, then put compiled .smx plugins in tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/. Start with administration and map control, add gameplay plugins only when the core is stable, and verify every layer from the server console before moving on.
What you actually need for a TF2 plugin
TF2 plugins are normally not loaded directly by the game server. They run through two components:

- SourceMod is the administration and plugin framework. It provides commands, menus, permissions, configuration handling and the runtime that loads compiled SourcePawn plugins.
- Individual plugins are usually compiled
.smxfiles. SourceMod loads them from its plugins directory.
The installation order matters. SourceMod depends on MetaMod:Source, so installing a plugin before both frameworks are working only makes troubleshooting harder. Keep the framework files in the TF2 game directory (normally the folder named tf), not in the server’s parent directory.
Which plugins are “best” for a TF2 server?
There is no permanent popularity ranking that fits every server. A public 24/7 server, a small group server and a competitive server have different requirements. Select plugins by the job they perform and check four things before installing:

- Maintenance and TF2 compatibility: read the plugin’s current release notes and confirm it still supports your server build, including any 64-bit changes.
- Dependencies: identify required extensions, libraries or companion plugins before uploading the file.
- Configuration clarity: prefer a plugin that documents its convars, admin permissions and generated configuration files.
- Audience fit: install only features your players will use. Every extra plugin adds another possible conflict after a TF2 update.

Administration and moderation
SourceMod is the foundation for moderation rather than an optional add-on. Once it is loaded, you can define administrators and use its command and menu system for routine actions. Treat permissions as a security boundary: give staff only the commands they need, keep high-impact actions restricted, and test an account with limited rights before opening the server to the public.
Map rotation, nominations and RTV
MapChooser Extended is a concrete choice when your goal is player voting rather than a fixed rotation. Its documented feature set includes map voting, nominations and Rock the Vote. Gameplay plugins can change round flow, scoring, restrictions or automation. Install these after MetaMod:Source, SourceMod and moderation are proven. When a gameplay plugin misbehaves, a working administrative path gives you a way to disable it, change maps or remove affected players without taking blind action.

Utilities and small quality-of-life changes
Utilities are safest when added incrementally. Upload one plugin, restart or reload, read the log, and play a short test session before adding another. This creates a clear cause-and-effect trail if a TF2 update or a new dependency introduces an error.
Prepare the server before uploading anything
- Have file-transfer access (FTP, SFTP or the control panel’s file manager) and access to the dedicated server console.
- Locate the TF2 game directory. In a standard installation it is the directory named
tf. - Make a backup of the existing
tf/addonsandtf/cfgfolders, or at least copy any current MetaMod:Source, SourceMod and plugin files. - Check the plugin’s release notes for operating-system requirements, dependencies and 64-bit behavior.
- Plan a maintenance window. Framework installation and plugin changes are easiest to diagnose when you can restart the server and watch its complete startup log.
Do not upload a source file and assume it is executable. SourceMod normally loads compiled .smx output. A .sp file is SourcePawn source code and must be compiled with an appropriate SourcePawn compiler before it can be installed.
Install MetaMod:Source
- Download the MetaMod:Source package that matches the server’s operating system.
- Extract the package while preserving its directory structure.
- Copy the package’s
addons/folder into the TF2 game directory. The result should be a path such astf/addons/, with MetaMod files beneath it. - If the release includes
metamod.vdf, confirm thattf/addons/metamod.vdfexists. Do not move it into the server root or intocfg. - Start the server or restart it from the host panel, then open the server console.
- Run
meta version.
A successful response identifies MetaMod:Source and its loaded version. An “unknown command” response means the loader is not active; installing SourceMod on top of that will not fix the underlying problem.

If meta version is unknown
- Check that you copied the package’s
addons/directory intotf/, not into the directory that containstf/. - Confirm that the files were not nested one level too deep, such as
tf/addons/addons/. - Verify that the package matches the server operating system and architecture.
- Check the startup log for a load error and correct file permissions if the host requires executable access.
- Restart after correcting the path; a console command cannot work until the server has loaded the files.
Install SourceMod
- Download the SourceMod package appropriate for the same server environment.
- Extract it without flattening the folders.
- Copy both the package’s
addons/andcfg/folders into the TF2 game directory. Merge them with the existing folders rather than replacing unrelated files. - Confirm that SourceMod’s files are under
tf/addons/sourcemod/and that its configuration files are undertf/cfg/sourcemod/. - Restart the server, then run
sm versionin the server console.
SourceMod should report its version and build information. If sm version is unknown while meta version works, MetaMod is loading but SourceMod is not. Recheck the merged folder structure and inspect the startup log for a missing binary, permission problem or architecture mismatch.
Install a compiled plugin
- Obtain the maintained distribution for the plugin and read its dependency and configuration notes.
- Use the compiled
.smxfile, not the optional source file, unless you intend to compile it yourself. - Upload the file to
tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/. Keep the filename and capitalization supplied by the plugin author. - If the package contains extensions, libraries or translation files, place each item in the directory specified by that package. Do not guess that every file belongs in
plugins/. - Restart the server, or use SourceMod’s plugin reload command when the plugin documentation says a live reload is safe.
- Watch the server console during loading. A successful load normally appears in the plugin listing and may create configuration files on the first start.
If you were given only a .sp file, compile it with a compatible SourcePawn compiler first. Compiler versions and include files must match the plugin’s requirements; otherwise the result may contain errors or load but behave incorrectly.
Configure and verify the plugin
Many plugins generate a configuration file in tf/cfg/sourcemod/ the first time they load. Let the server create that file, stop or restart the server cleanly, then edit the generated settings. This avoids editing a file that has not yet been created and gives you the plugin’s current defaults.

- Run
sm plugins listand locate the plugin by name. - Read the status shown for the plugin. A listed plugin with an error is not equivalent to a healthy, running plugin.
- Use the plugin’s documented help command, if it provides one, to confirm that its commands and convars are registered.
- Inspect the server console log for missing dependencies, failed signatures, invalid convars or map-change errors.
- Change one setting at a time, reload or restart as documented, and test the resulting behavior in game.
For MapChooser Extended, test the complete path rather than only checking that the file appears in the list: confirm that players can nominate an installed map, that a vote opens at the expected time, that RTV is available under the configured rules, and that the selected map changes successfully.

The server says meta or sm is an unknown command
The relevant framework is not loaded. Start with the directory level: MetaMod:Source files belong beneath tf/addons/; SourceMod files belong beneath tf/addons/sourcemod/. Correct any extra nesting, restart, and test meta version before testing sm version.
MetaMod works but SourceMod does not
This usually indicates an incomplete SourceMod copy, a package for the wrong operating system or an architecture incompatibility. Recopy both addons/ and cfg/, preserve the package hierarchy, and read the startup log for the first SourceMod error rather than the last follow-on message.
The .smx file is present but absent from sm plugins list
Check that the file is in exactly tf/addons/sourcemod/plugins/, that it is actually compiled, and that its filename ends in .smx. Then look for a dependency or load error in the console. A plugin can also be intentionally disabled by a configuration file or fail because it targets an incompatible API.

The plugin appears with an error
Read the full error text. Missing extensions, libraries and companion plugins must be installed in their documented locations. If the error began after a TF2 update, compare the plugin’s release notes with the current server build before changing unrelated files. Temporarily remove or disable only the affected plugin to confirm that it is the source of the failure.
No configuration file was created
Verify that the plugin loaded without an error, then restart or reload it as documented. Some plugins create configuration files only after their first successful initialization. Check tf/cfg/sourcemod/, not the game root, and verify that the server account can write to that directory.
A map vote succeeds but the change fails
Check that every map named in the plugin’s map list exists on the server with the exact filename expected by TF2. Remove stale entries, test a manual map change, and then run a new vote. This separates a voting configuration problem from a missing-map problem.
Several plugins broke after an update
Do not replace the entire installation blindly. Save the logs, disable the newest or recently changed plugin, and test the framework commands first. Then review each plugin’s current compatibility notes, including 64-bit behavior and changed dependencies. Re-enable plugins one at a time so the incompatible component is identifiable.
A safe maintenance routine
- Keep a change log: record the plugin filename, version, date, dependencies and configuration changes.
- Back up before updates: preserve
tf/addons,tf/cfg/sourcemodand any custom map lists. - Update in layers: verify MetaMod:Source, then SourceMod, then plugins. Do not update every component simultaneously when you need a clear diagnosis.
- Test on a quiet window: restart, run
meta version,sm versionandsm plugins list, then perform the plugin’s key action in game. - Remove cleanly: disable a plugin before deleting its
.smx; then remove or archive its generated configuration only after you are sure it will not be reinstalled. - Limit permissions: review administrator access whenever you add moderation commands or hand the server to a new operator.
A practical starter sequence
For a new server, the least risky order is:
- Install MetaMod:Source and get a valid response from
meta version. - Install SourceMod and get a valid response from
sm version. - Configure administrators and test a restricted staff account.
- Add map management, such as MapChooser Extended, and verify nominations, voting, RTV and map changes.
- Add one gameplay or utility plugin, inspect its generated configuration, and test it through a full round.
- Continue only when the logs are clean and you can identify how to disable the last change.
This sequence gives you a dependable recovery path: moderation remains available while you diagnose a later plugin, and every new feature has a known installation point, dependency set and verification command.
