For most Linux users, the right shortlist is simple: choose htop when process inspection and control are the priority, btop for a broad local view of processor, memory, disks, network, and processes, Glances when you need remote access, APIs, or data export, and consider nmon only after checking its current package and maintenance status on your distribution.
There is no evidence-based universal winner here. The projects document different scopes and operating modes, but the available material does not provide controlled head-to-head measurements of speed, CPU use, memory use, or ease of use. Use the functional comparison below to match a monitor to the job you actually need.

| Monitor | Best fit | Documented coverage | Remote, API, or export features | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| htop | Interactive process inspection and management in a terminal | Processes, with an interactive terminal interface | Not established in the reviewed project material | Use the package or version supplied by your Linux distribution, or follow the official source route |
| btop | A single broad local resource overview | Processor, memory, disks, network, and processes | Not established in the reviewed project material | Installation methods and package versions can change; use the project’s current Linux instructions |
| Glances | Wider metric coverage, remote monitoring, APIs, or export | Cross-platform curses and web monitoring; the displayed information adapts to terminal size | Client/server operation, web access, APIs, and export are documented | Some capabilities need optional dependencies; the documentation currently identifies version 4.5.8, while distribution packages may differ |
| nmon | A broad metric set where a current package is available | CPU, memory, network, disk, filesystem, NFS, and top-process information | Not established in the reviewed project material | The project homepage identifies Linux version 16s from November 2015; verify present-day availability and maintenance before relying on it |
The table describes documented scope, not a performance ranking. None of the reviewed project pages supplies a controlled benchmark that would justify calling one monitor faster or lighter than the others.

How to choose a Linux terminal monitor
Start with the question you need the screen to answer. A process-focused question such as “Which program is consuming CPU right now?” points toward htop. A machine-health question covering several resource classes at once points toward btop. A fleet or automation question—“Can I view another host, query values programmatically, or export them?”—points toward Glances. nmon can show many categories, but its dated Linux release notice makes package verification part of the choice rather than an afterthought.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
1. Decide which metrics matter
Do not select a monitor solely because its screen looks dense. List the resources you intend to watch:
- Processes: process lists, sorting, selection, and interactive management favor htop.
- Core local resources: btop’s project description explicitly includes processor, memory, disks, network, and processes.
- Extended or operational data: Glances is the documented option when web presentation, client/server operation, APIs, or export are requirements.
- Specialized breadth: nmon lists CPU, memory, network, disk, filesystem, NFS, and top-process information, subject to its current-installation caveat.
2. Consider where the screen will run
All four are terminal-oriented software, but they are not identical in how they present information. Glances is documented as a curses and web monitor that adapts to terminal size, which is useful when the same tool must work in a small terminal, a larger console, or a browser-oriented workflow. For the other projects, choose based on the interface and operating modes supplied by the version your distribution packages.
3. Separate local observation from remote operations
A local screen is enough for diagnosing one machine at the keyboard or through a shell session. If you need a monitoring process on one host and a client on another, or you need to retrieve values through an API or export them for another system, Glances has those capabilities in its official documentation. The other three should not be assumed to provide equivalent functions simply because they display similar metrics.
4. Check installation and lifecycle risk
Package availability is distribution-specific. A project may publish source and release binaries while a particular Linux release carries an older package—or no package at all. This matters most for nmon: its homepage still calls 16s, dated November 2015, the latest Linux version. That statement does not prove that no newer build exists elsewhere, but it does mean you should verify the package, architecture support, and maintenance status before standardizing on nmon.
htop: choose it for process work
htop is the focused choice when your immediate task is understanding and managing running processes in a terminal. Its official downloads information describes the software as freely available in source form and notes that binaries are provided by operating-system distributions. That makes the distribution package the natural first installation route, while the project’s source download route is available when your platform does not provide a suitable build.
What htop is good at
- Investigating which processes are active when a system feels slow.
- Viewing a process list in an interactive terminal interface rather than repeatedly running one-shot commands.
- Selecting a process for management from the monitor itself.
- Keeping a familiar process-centered tool available across machines, provided each distribution offers a usable package.
The evidence supports htop as a process viewer and interactive manager. It does not support claims that htop is the fastest, uses the least memory, or is easier to use than the alternatives. Those would require controlled measurements or documented usability testing that are not available here.

Install and version checks
- Check whether your Linux distribution provides an htop package.
- Install the distribution package when it is available and suitable for your release.
- Confirm the installed version using the package manager or the program’s own version option.
- If the package is missing or too old for your needs, consult the official htop source-download route and follow its build requirements.
- Launch the installed executable from the terminal and verify that the process list populates before using it for diagnosis.
Do not copy a package name or version from another distribution and assume it applies to yours. The official downloads page specifically directs readers to check their operating system’s package manager.

If your first requirement is a simultaneous overview of processor, memory, disks, and network activity, htop’s documented positioning as a process viewer may leave you switching tools. If you need a web view, client/server operation, an API, or export, choose a monitor whose documentation explicitly provides those modes instead.
btop: a broad local overview
btop is the clearest fit when you want one terminal screen covering several major resource classes. Its project description explicitly lists processor, memory, disks, network, and processes. That scope makes it a practical starting point for a local “what is happening on this machine?” check without implying that it wins a benchmark.
What btop covers
- Processor: inspect current processor activity as part of the overall dashboard.
- Memory: include memory pressure in the same view as compute and storage activity.
- Disks: watch storage activity alongside other resources.
- Network: see network activity without opening a separate monitor.
- Processes: retain process visibility while looking at the wider system picture.
The project provides Linux installation paths that include distribution packages and release binaries. Because repository instructions and package contents change, use the current instructions for your distribution and the project’s current release channel rather than treating an old command copied into an article as permanent.
Install and update safely
- Look for a btop package in your distribution’s repositories.
- Compare the repository version with the version and build type your workload requires.
- If no suitable package exists, review the project’s Linux instructions for a release binary or another supported installation path.
- After installation, launch btop in the terminal and check that all expected resource panels are populated.
- Record the installation source when managing several servers so that package updates remain reproducible.
Do not infer that a release binary is automatically preferable to a distribution package. The right choice depends on your distribution’s update policy, architecture, and compatibility requirements.

Glances: for remote, web, API, and export workflows
Glances goes beyond a local curses display. Its official overview describes a cross-platform monitor with curses and web modes, client/server operation, APIs, and export options. It also adapts the information shown to the terminal’s size. Those characteristics make it the strongest documented match for administrators who need to observe more than one host or connect monitoring data to another system.
Capabilities that distinguish Glances
- Terminal and web presentation: use the curses interface locally or a web-oriented mode where appropriate.
- Client/server operation: separate the monitored host from the client used to view it.
- APIs: retrieve monitoring data programmatically when a terminal screen is not the final destination.
- Export: send or write data through supported export integrations documented by the project.
- Adaptive display: the interface changes the information shown according to terminal size.
These are documented features, not a promise that every installation includes every integration. The installation documentation identifies optional feature sets, including web and export dependencies. Plan those extras before deployment rather than discovering a missing dependency when you first try to start a server or exporter.
Installation considerations
Current documentation describes installation from PyPI with pip. In some environments, Python headers may be needed to build the psutil dependency. A minimal installation and a feature-rich installation therefore have different prerequisites.
- Check your distribution’s Python and package-management policy before installing into the system interpreter.
- Review the Glances installation documentation and choose the base installation method appropriate for your environment.
- Add the documented optional feature set if you need web access or export.
- Be prepared to install development headers when the psutil dependency must be built locally.
- Confirm the installed Glances version and compare it with the project documentation; the documentation currently identifies version 4.5.8, while distribution packages may carry another version.
- Test the exact operating mode you intend to use: local curses, client/server, web, API, or export.
Do not treat “installed successfully” as proof that every mode is available. Optional dependencies can leave the base monitor working while a web or export command remains unavailable until the corresponding extras are installed.
When Glances is more than you need
If you only need to inspect and manage processes on the current host, htop may be a simpler match for that stated goal. If you want a broad local dashboard but have no remote or integration requirement, btop’s documented scope may be sufficient. Glances earns its additional setup when its extra operating modes solve a real operational need.
nmon: broad metrics with a currency warning
nmon’s project page lists a wide set of metrics: CPU, memory, network, disk, filesystem, NFS, and top-process information. It supports Linux and several architectures, so it can be relevant on systems where that combination of coverage and architecture support is useful.

The release-status qualification
The nmon homepage identifies Linux version 16s as the latest Linux version and dates that notice to November 2015. Treat this as a warning to verify, not as proof that every current Linux repository lacks newer code. Check your target distribution for the package version, architecture, security updates, and maintenance status before deploying nmon on a production fleet.

When nmon makes sense
- Your distribution supplies a current, supported package that meets your requirements.
- You specifically need the metric categories listed by the project, including filesystem or NFS information.
- You have verified that the package is maintained for the Linux release and architecture you operate.
When to choose another tool
Select another monitor when package currency is uncertain, when you require documented client/server, API, or export functions, or when your main task is interactive process management. nmon’s broad list of metrics does not by itself establish that it is the best maintained or best performing option today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Installation plan for any of the four
Use the same disciplined process regardless of the monitor you select. It avoids the most common mistake in terminal-monitor setup: copying an instruction intended for a different distribution or assuming that one installed package includes every optional feature.
- Identify the host and architecture. Record the Linux distribution, release, CPU architecture, and whether the monitor will run locally or be viewed remotely.
- Check the distribution repository first. A repository package usually integrates with the system’s update and removal mechanisms. Confirm its version and build options.
- Read the project’s current installation guidance. This is essential for btop release binaries, htop source builds, Glances optional dependencies, and nmon’s current availability.
- Keep optional features explicit. For Glances, web, export, and related integrations may require additional dependencies. Install only the feature sets you intend to operate.
- Test in the same terminal conditions as production. A monitor that behaves well in a large local terminal may present different information in a small window; Glances explicitly adapts its display to terminal size.
- Record the source and version. Note whether the program came from a distribution repository, a project release binary, source, or PyPI. This makes later upgrades and incident diagnosis easier.
- Verify the expected data. Check that process entries and the resource categories you care about are populated before treating the monitor as operational.
Which monitor should you use in common situations?
“A process is consuming the machine”
Start with htop. Its documented purpose is an interactive process viewer, so it aligns directly with identifying and managing a troublesome process. Move to a broader monitor only if the process list does not explain the processor, memory, disk, or network symptoms.
“I want one local dashboard”
Start with btop because its project description explicitly combines processor, memory, disks, network, and processes. This is a functional fit, not a claim that its rendering or resource usage beats the alternatives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“I need to inspect another host or integrate data”
Choose Glances when client/server operation, web access, APIs, or export is part of the requirement. Verify the optional dependencies and test the chosen mode rather than assuming the base installation includes every integration.

“I need CPU, memory, network, disk, filesystem, and NFS views”
nmon lists those categories, but first verify that your distribution offers a maintained package. If it does not, reassess whether another monitor’s current support and documented operating modes are a safer fit.
“I need a recommendation based on speed”
No responsible answer can rank these four by speed or resource consumption from the available evidence. The official pages reviewed describe features and installation routes, not controlled head-to-head measurements. Measure in your own environment if overhead is a hard requirement, and document the workload, terminal size, refresh behavior, and versions used.
Troubleshooting and failure modes
The package is missing
Check the distribution’s enabled repositories and release support, then consult the project’s official installation route. For htop and btop, this may mean using a source route or release binary when the distribution package is unavailable. Do not substitute a package built for another distribution without checking compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
The installed version differs from the documentation
That is normal when distribution repositories move at a different pace from upstream projects. Record the version you actually installed, read the matching documentation where available, and avoid assuming that a feature described for a newer release exists in the packaged one.
Glances starts but a feature does not
Check whether the missing function is an optional web or export capability. Review the installation documentation for the required extras and whether Python headers are needed to build psutil in your environment. Then test that mode separately from the basic curses interface.
The display is cramped
Resize the terminal or use a monitor whose documented behavior suits changing terminal dimensions. Glances explicitly adapts the information shown to terminal size. For the other tools, rely on the controls and layout supplied by the version you installed rather than assuming that every build behaves identically.
nmon appears old or unsupported
Recheck the package metadata, project status, architecture support, and security-update policy. The homepage’s November 2015 Linux-version notice is a reason for verification. If your distribution cannot provide a maintained build, select a currently supported alternative that covers the metrics you need.
Limits of this comparison
The four projects are not interchangeable products with a single official scorecard. Their documentation establishes different feature sets and installation paths, but it does not establish comparative benchmarks, a universal usability ranking, or a common measurement of terminal overhead. Package availability also varies by Linux distribution and release.
Use the documented fit as the selection method: htop for process-centered interaction, btop for a broad local resource screen, Glances for remote/API/export workflows, and nmon only after a current-support check. Revisit the choice when your requirement changes—for example, when a local diagnosis becomes a multi-host monitoring task.
