Best Tactics Games to Play After XCOM 2

Choose your next tactics game by what you want from XCOM 2: campaign management, mech combat, readable tactical puzzles, a mercenary map or story-driven ability combos.

What should you play after XCOM 2? Start with Phoenix Point if you want another tactical campaign that also asks you to manage a wider conflict. Choose BATTLETECH for mech battles and company management, Jagged Alliance 3 for mercenaries on a living campaign map, Into the Breach for compact tactical puzzles, or Tactical Breach Wizards for a story-led campaign built around creative ability combinations.

These games share turn-based tactics, but they do not all recreate XCOM 2’s blend of firefights, persistent soldiers and global strategy. The right pick depends on which part of that mix you want to keep.

Choose by the part of XCOM 2 you want to keep

Game Best fit if you want… Campaign beyond battles What shapes a turn
Phoenix Point A broad tactical campaign Global diplomacy and economy management Procedural battles against enemies that adapt to your tactics
BATTLETECH Mechs and a managed fighting force Mercenary contracts, base improvements and machine maintenance Turn-based BattleMech combat
Into the Breach Clear, puzzle-like tactical decisions A smaller-scale experience centered on individual battles Countering visible enemy attacks while protecting civilian buildings
Jagged Alliance 3 A mercenary roster and an explorable campaign map Territory control, militia training, multiple squads and exploration Action-point choices in combat
Tactical Breach Wizards Story, experimentation and unusual abilities A story-driven campaign Steam describes as about 14 hours Combining abilities and rewinding failed experiments

That range reflects what makes XCOM-like games appealing: tough turn-based battles, a wider threat to manage and heroes who persist across missions. Wargamer uses that combination as a frame for games like XCOM, but no single alternative here should be expected to reproduce the whole formula (Wargamer’s overview).

For a tactical campaign with a wider conflict: Phoenix Point

Phoenix Point is the closest fit here if you want battles connected to strategic decisions beyond the map. Its Steam description pairs procedural tactical encounters with global diplomacy and economy management; it also says the alien enemy adapts to the player’s tactics. That makes it a natural choice if you want combat and a larger campaign to matter together, rather than a sequence of isolated puzzles.

CGE Codenames: XXL Board Game (2nd Edition)
  • Spymasters give one-word clues and a number to link multiple cards, encouraging creative thinking

The overlap is at the broad level of tactical battles within a campaign. The available description does not establish that its individual systems match XCOM 2’s, so approach it as a different strategy game rather than a one-for-one substitute. Steam lists its release date as December 3, 2020 (Steam).

For mech combat and company management: BATTLETECH

BATTLETECH shifts the focus from soldiers to BattleMechs and the mercenary outfit that fields them. Paradox describes turn-based mech combat alongside contracts, base improvements and the work of maintaining machines (Paradox Interactive).

AMIGO Games X-Code - Cooperative Strategy Board Game for 2-8 Players, Ages 8+
  • COOPERATIVE GAMEPLAY: Work together as a team to crack the code and cover every space on the board within the 3-minute time limit.
  • PROGRESSIVE CHALLENGES: Experience 10 levels of missions that increase in difficulty, ensuring a thrilling and evolving game experience.
  • FAST-PACED FUN: Enjoy the excitement of a high-pressure game where quick thinking and communication are key to success.
  • PERFECT FOR GROUPS: Designed for 2-8 players aged 8 and up, X-Code is ideal for family game nights, parties, and group gatherings.
  • EASY TO LEARN: With illustrated instructions and a brief how-to-play video available online, players can quickly get started and dive into the action.

Pick it if preparation and the fortunes of a fighting company interest you as much as the encounters themselves, and you are happy to trade an infantry setting for machines. Its campaign management is built around a mercenary business and its equipment, not a direct continuation of XCOM 2’s particular world or systems.

For legible, puzzle-like turns: Into the Breach

Into the Breach makes tactical reasoning unusually explicit: enemy attacks are visible in advance, and your job is to respond by positioning mechs and protecting civilian buildings. Each turn becomes a compact problem of deciding which incoming threat to disrupt and what damage you can afford to allow. Steam lists a February 27, 2018 release date (Steam).

XCOM: Enemy Within
  • New Weapons and Equipment: Give your operatives an extra tactical edge with new projects from your engineering team and the Foundry

This is the pick for deliberate, readable encounters, not for a broad strategic campaign with a persistent roster. If XCOM 2’s firefights are the part you want to retain but its larger campaign is not essential, the smaller puzzle-like scale is the point.

For mercenaries on an open campaign map: Jagged Alliance 3

Jagged Alliance 3 embeds action-point combat in a campaign about operating across a larger map. Its official site highlights territory control, militia training, multiple squads and exploration alongside combat (THQ Nordic).

Mayday Games XCOM Board Game Accessory- Standard Card Sleeve Bundle
  • Sized For the XCom: The Board Game: This bundle is made for the XCom board game, providing standard card sleeves to match the three card sizes used throughout XCom. Each sleeve is dimensioned to fit XCom cards exactly, with no gaps, bunching, or excess material dragging during play or shuffling. These exact fit card sleeves hold every card secure in a clean, flat position. One bundle covers the complete XCom card library with no separate purchases needed.
  • Soft Clear Polypropylene, Acid-free, PVC-free Sleeves: Each sleeve is formed from soft, clear polypropylene, providing clear sleeves for cards that keep art sharp and fully visible. These transparent card sleeves are made without acids or PVC, designed to avoid the yellowing and warping that affect low-grade plastic sleeves. Mayday Games polypropylene maintains clear visibility over time.
  • 40 Micron Standard Sleeves, Ideal Weight For High-Card-Count Play: At 40 microns, these standard card sleeves are built for the demands of games like XCom, where large card counts make flexible, easy handling a priority. The lighter profile lets sleeves go on cleanly without the stiffness that thicker formats add, keeping gameplay smooth through every deal and shuffle. For players managing large XCom card sets across long sessions, standard 40-micron polypropylene delivers consistent sleeve coverage without bulk.
  • Archival-Safe Storage For Long-Term Protection: These protective card sleeves are formulated without acids or PVC, helping reduce the two most common sources of card deterioration in standard plastic sleeves. Card surfaces, printed art, and card stock stay stable through years of storage and active play. Whether you are archiving a collector copy of XCom or sleeving a game played weekly, these sleeves are designed for regular gameplay and storage.
  • 300 Sleeves, Complete XCom: The Board Game Coverage: This bundle includes 1 x MDG-7044 (57.5x89mm), 1 x MDG-7039 (41x63mm), 1 x MDG-7152 (70x120mm) standard clear card sleeves, totaling 300 card protector sleeves engineered to cover every card in the XCom game. Instead of sourcing individual standard size card sleeve packs and hoping for the right sizing, this single bundle delivers the exact count and correct dimensions for complete XCom game coverage, straight from Mayday Games.

Choose it if you want a roster of mercenaries and strategic decisions about where your forces go, rather than a game focused only on mission-by-mission fights. Its action-point system is a different tactical framing; the official description establishes these campaign features, not a direct match for XCOM 2’s mechanics.

For story and experimental ability combos: Tactical Breach Wizards

Tactical Breach Wizards is a story-led turn-based tactics game where unusual abilities invite experimentation. Steam describes a campaign of about 14 hours and highlights the ability to rewind mistakes, making it a good fit if you want to test combinations and revise a failed attempt instead of treating every misstep as final (Steam).

Choose it for its story, tone and ability-driven encounters rather than a familiar military campaign structure. Its appeal is the room to experiment inside individual tactical situations.

An upcoming Warhammer tactics option

Xbox Wire reported on May 22, 2026, that Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Deathwatch was announced for Xbox Series X|S with a planned winter 2026 release, describing it as a sequel to Daemonhunters (Xbox Wire). Winter 2026 is still ahead as of October 4, 2026, so this is an upcoming option, not a game to treat as available now. The interview quotes Complex Games studio head Jonas Van Niekerk: “The aim with both Daemonhunters and Deathwatch was to be independent enough that it’s completely fine to come into this game with no prior knowledge.”
