1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you need desktop Microsoft Office features, a Windows tablet such as Microsoft Surface Pro is the clearest fit in the available evidence: Microsoft documents installing Office on Surface Pro as on a desktop computer. If your work is mainly reading and editing files, an iPad or Android tablet may suit you through the Microsoft 365 mobile apps—but app features and editing eligibility can depend on your plan and screen size.
First decide whether you need desktop Office or mobile apps
The key distinction is the software, not whether a tablet has a keyboard. Surface Pro runs Windows and supports installing Office as on a desktop computer, making it the most directly supported choice here for workflows that rely on desktop Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Microsoft’s setup guidance for Office on mobile devices and Surface Pro explains the installation route.

iPad and Android tablets have Microsoft 365 mobile apps. Those apps let you work with Office files, but their features are not automatically the same as desktop Office. Microsoft’s mobile-app overview describes the available platforms and app experience. If a task depends on a particular Excel, Word, or PowerPoint feature, verify that it works in the mobile app before choosing a tablet.
How the main tablet options fit Office work

Check Microsoft 365 mobile editing eligibility
Mobile editing and some premium features can depend on both screen size and subscription eligibility. Microsoft identifies free core editing for some devices at or below 10.1 inches and documents additional plan-specific rules. That threshold is not a blanket guarantee that every feature is free on every smaller tablet, nor that every larger tablet requires the same plan.
Before buying an iPad or Android tablet for editing, use Microsoft’s current plan-specific mobile app feature guidance to check your subscription and intended device. Recheck it when plans or app policies change.

Choose a keyboard for the way you type
A compatible keyboard makes longer typing sessions more practical, but it does not turn mobile Word, Excel, or PowerPoint into desktop apps. Microsoft presents keyboard use with Surface Pro as optional; its Surface Pro product information and technical specifications are useful starting points for checking the current device and keyboard compatibility.

For an iPad or Android tablet, treat a keyboard case as a typing accessory. Confirm that it fits the exact tablet generation, and do not assume it adds desktop-only Office capabilities. Include the keyboard in your budget if you expect to type regularly; detachable and case keyboards may be optional rather than bundled.

A practical decision checklist
- List the Office tasks you actually do. Identify any specific desktop-only behavior or feature your Word, Excel, or PowerPoint work requires.
- Choose the software route. If desktop Office installation is essential, start with a Windows tablet such as Surface Pro. If the mobile apps cover your tasks, consider iPad or Android.
- Verify your plan and device. For mobile editing, check the exact screen size and subscription against Microsoft’s current feature guidance.
- Check the complete typing setup. Confirm whether the keyboard is optional, whether it is compatible with the specific tablet model, and whether its cost fits your budget.
- Recheck current details before purchase. Tablet lineups, keyboard compatibility, and Microsoft 365 rules can change.
