Smalland: Survive the Wilds is the closest Switch 2-listed alternative to Valheim: both combine open-world exploration, gathering, crafting, building, survival threats and online co-op. Its tiny-scale wilderness gives the formula a very different feel. Valheim itself is also now listed for Switch 2, with Nintendo giving it a release date of September 9, 2026.
Best games like Valheim on Nintendo Switch 2
These games share some of Valheim’s survival, exploration or crafting appeal, but they do not all reproduce its blend of co-op, combat progression and base-building. The Switch 2 status matters, too: Smalland and Valheim have native Switch 2 listings; the other suggestions below are older Switch editions, so check their individual compatibility before buying or downloading.

Which one should you choose?
For the closest overall match: Smalland
Smalland is the clearest recommendation if you want several parts of Valheim’s loop together: exploring an open world, collecting materials, crafting, establishing a settlement and surviving hostile creatures. Nintendo lists online play for up to 10 players, as it does for Valheim. Those shared features make it a strong mechanical match, not an identical game; its miniature scale is central to the experience.
For solo exploration: Subnautica
Choose Subnautica if discovering a strange environment and managing survival resources matter more than playing together. Oxygen and the underwater setting create pressure unlike Valheim’s biomes and combat progression. It is not a co-op substitute on Switch.
#1 Best Overall
- Hard-Hitting Arcade Beat ’Em Up Combat - Use brutal melee abilities, crowd-clearing ranged attacks, or a mix of the two in fast-paced skirmishes. Enjoy responsive, crisp, and satisfying fighting gameplay while exploring the apocalypse.
- Face Iconic Bosses - Take on powerful, fan-favorite walkers like Winslow, the Well Walker, and more. The Saviors provide their own challenges as you throw down with Negan and Simon in intense, multi-phase boss battles that test your skill, strategy, and survival instincts.
- Replayable Arcade Challenge - Master each character’s move set and tackle multiple difficulty levels in an experience built for repeat runs and escalating challenges. Or jump in with an optional Easy Mode for casual play.
For a harsher survival challenge: The Long Dark or Green Hell
The Long Dark is about enduring a frozen wilderness; Green Hell shifts the struggle to a jungle and emphasizes bodily needs and resource management. Both are better fits for players seeking survival difficulty than for those looking to build a shared home and progress through bosses with friends. Nintendo Life describes their Switch editions as having no multiplayer.
For crafting with a different tone: Don’t Starve
Don’t Starve offers a more punishing, eerie take on survival and crafting. Nintendo Life reports that multiplayer was added to the Switch version in 2022, but its 2D presentation and survival focus make it a distinct alternative, not a close match for Valheim’s 3D world.

- Includes: School Bus Adventures DLC and digital soundtrack
- Build: your own home on wheels and live sustainably off-grid
- Source Energy: power your electric camper van with energy from the sun, wind, or water.
- Craft: workstations and tools from resources provided by Mother Nature.
- Grow: create gardens to nurture delicate and delicious plants and mushrooms
For a focused voyage: Windbound
Windbound centers on sailing, gathering and improving a boat across a five-chapter adventure. It suits players who want survival and exploration in a structured journey, rather than a persistent-feeling co-op base-building loop.
For open-ended building: Minecraft
Minecraft is worth considering if construction and sandbox freedom are the main attractions. Its broader, looser format is farther from Valheim’s Viking-inspired world and boss-led progression.

- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
What makes a game feel like Valheim?
Valheim’s appeal comes from a combination, not just a survival label: procedural biomes to explore, resources to gather, equipment to craft, bases to build, cooking and survival systems, sailing, boss progression and online play. The closer an alternative comes to several of those elements at once, the more likely it is to satisfy the same player.
- Loop similarity: Does exploration lead into gathering, crafting, building and further progression?
- Co-op: Is multiplayer available in the Switch edition, or is the game primarily solo? Features on other platforms do not establish Switch multiplayer.
- Survival pressure: Consider whether you want to manage threats such as hunger, temperature, oxygen, illness or hostile wildlife, and how punishing failure feels.
- World and perspective: A tiny wilderness, alien ocean, frozen landscape, jungle or broad sandbox can share survival mechanics while feeling very different from Viking biomes.
Check Switch 2 compatibility before buying older Switch games
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play Switch games, but some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. It advises checking individual third-party games with their publishers. That matters for Subnautica, Don’t Starve, The Long Dark, Green Hell, Windbound and Minecraft: the cited Switch listings are not, by themselves, confirmation of a Switch 2 edition or complete compatibility. - Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn includes bonus in-game content (delivered via an online update) and a set of collectible stickers. This edition also includes a Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card.
By contrast, Nintendo lists native Switch 2 releases for both Smalland and Valheim. Valheim’s listing describes procedural biomes, gathering, sailing, boss progression, equipment crafting, base construction, cooking, survival systems and online play for one to 10 players. Nintendo Life’s survival-games guide also includes The Flame in the Flood, This War of Mine and Sheltered. They move farther from Valheim’s open-world crafting and co-op loop: This War of Mine focuses on civilian survival under siege, while Sheltered is described as a resource-management simulation. They may suit a broader search for survival games, but they are not close Valheim replacements.
