Best Survival Crafting Games Like RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Valheim is the closest broad match for Dragonwilds’ co-op fantasy survival, while Sons of the Forest and Subnautica suit different survival and exploration priorities.

Valheim is the strongest all-around alternative if you want co-op fantasy exploration, crafting, base building, and boss fights. Choose Sons of the Forest for tougher wilderness survival and hostile encounters, or Subnautica if exploration and crafting matter more to you than fantasy or co-op. None recreates Dragonwilds’ RuneScape setting and skill identity; the best fit depends on which part of its loop you want next.

What makes a game feel like Dragonwilds?

Jagex describes RuneScape: Dragonwilds as an open-world co-op crafting and survival game set on Ashenfall, a previously unexplored continent in the RuneScape universe. Its announced core loop brings together gathering materials, using magic, levelling skills, preparing potions, crafting equipment, and fighting dragons. You can play solo or in teams of four. Jagex’s Dragonwilds site describes the game and its world.

That mix makes “similar” a matter of emphasis. You might want the fantasy setting and dangerous expeditions, the hands-on work of gathering and building, or the pressure of staying alive while exploring. The games below overlap with Dragonwilds in different ways, rather than matching every part of it.

Which Dragonwilds alternative should you choose?

Game Best fit if you want What overlaps What differs
Valheim Co-op fantasy survival and building Exploration, crafting, cooking, base building, and boss fights Viking setting rather than RuneScape’s world and skill identity
Sons of the Forest More direct wilderness danger Gathering, shelter-building, traps, and survival pressure Hostile-island survival rather than fantasy progression
Subnautica Discovery, resource gathering, and crafting Exploration, crafting, and building habitats Underwater science-fiction setting; the cited guide does not establish co-op

The descriptions and gameplay details for these alternatives are drawn primarily from PC Gamer’s survival-game guide. A GamesRadar+ review published after Dragonwilds reached full release calls Valheim its clearest competitor. The ranking here is an editorial match based on the cited mechanics, not a claim that one game reproduces Dragonwilds.

Valheim: the best broad match for co-op fantasy survival

Pick Valheim first if what you want is a shared fantasy adventure built around journeys, dangerous fights, and making a home between expeditions. PC Gamer describes its massive, procedurally generated world, boss fights, base building, cooking, and crafting. It can be played solo, though PC Gamer highlights co-op as a particular strength.

The similarity is in the broad rhythm: explore, collect, craft, prepare, and take on tougher threats. The setting is Viking-inspired rather than RuneScape’s Ashenfall, and the cited descriptions do not establish an equivalent system of RuneScape skills, spells, and potions. If those specific progression hooks are why Dragonwilds appeals to you, treat Valheim as a genre match, not a substitute for that identity.

RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg
  • Grab your capes and party hats, because we’re going to Gielinor!
  • Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.

Sons of the Forest: choose it for more immediate survival pressure

If “like Dragonwilds” means danger, resource management, and building what you need to endure, Sons of the Forest offers a harsher angle. PC Gamer describes a stranded-island loop of finding food and water, building shelters, setting traps, and defending against hostile locals.

That makes it a better fit for readers who want survival tension and hostile encounters than for those seeking RuneScape-style fantasy exploration or skill progression. Its overlap is practical survival and construction, not Dragonwilds’ dragons, magic, or setting.

Subnautica: choose it for exploration and crafting

Subnautica is worth considering if discovery and making useful tools or a base matter more than medieval fantasy. PC Gamer describes underwater exploration through submerged environments, gathering resources and sustenance, building habitats, and crafting technology.

Its alien-ocean setting is a substantial change from Ashenfall, and the cited guide does not establish current platform availability for every edition. Check the relevant store listing for the edition and platform you intend to use. The cited gameplay description also does not establish co-op, so do not choose it on the assumption that it offers Dragonwilds’ solo-or-team format.
