For most students choosing a new Surface Pro, the 12-inch Surface Pro (1st Edition) is the more portable option for everyday coursework, while the 13-inch Surface Pro (12th Edition) is the better fit for students who want more screen space and higher-end configuration choices. Both are Windows tablets that can work like laptops with a separately purchased, model-matched keyboard. Before buying a Snapdragon model, check that your essential apps, school assessment tools, and peripherals work on Windows on Arm.
Which Surface Pro fits your student workload?
| Model | Best suited to | What Microsoft lists | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Pro 12-inch (1st Edition) | Students who value portability for reading, everyday coursework, and tablet use. | 12-inch LCD touchscreen, 1.5 lb (686 g) device weight, Wi-Fi 7, and up to 16 hours of local video playback. | The keyboard is sold separately, and only the dedicated 12-inch keyboard fits. Make sure the screen is large enough for your coursework. |
| Surface Pro 13-inch (12th Edition) | Students who want more screen area and a wider range of performance and memory options. | Snapdragon X2 Plus or X2 Elite processor options; 16–64 GB RAM; removable SSD options of 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB; and up to 15.5 hours of local video playback or 11.5 hours of active web use. | Choose RAM and storage for your actual course applications, and include the keyboard in your budget. |
| Surface Pro 13-inch (11th Edition) | Students considering an older-generation device or a business configuration. | Microsoft lists consumer Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite models. Its support guide also lists business configurations with Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7. | Confirm the generation, processor architecture, Windows edition, price, and current stock; listings for the 11th Edition may refer to different configurations. |
These models can support common student tasks such as taking notes, annotating documents, researching, and using school applications. That does not mean owning one has been shown to improve grades or learning outcomes.

How to choose between the 12-inch and 13-inch models
Choose the 12-inch model for a lighter, more compact setup
At 1.5 lb (686 g), Microsoft’s listed device weight makes the 12-inch Pro the easier of these two new options to carry as a tablet. Its smaller screen may be a worthwhile trade-off if you mostly read, take notes, browse course materials, and use a keyboard only some of the time. Consider how much side-by-side work you do: a compact display can feel limiting when you need a document, reference, and notes visible together.
Choose the 13-inch 12th Edition for more room and configuration headroom
The 13-inch screen gives you more working space for split-screen reading, writing, and research. Microsoft lists configurations with 16–64 GB of RAM and removable SSD capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. Those options can accommodate a broader range of coursework, but more memory or storage is useful only if your applications and files require it.

Compare battery claims carefully. Microsoft estimates up to 16 hours of local video playback for the 12-inch model, and up to 15.5 hours of local video playback or 11.5 hours of active web use for the 13-inch 12th Edition. The figures use different test protocols, so they are not directly comparable. Microsoft also cautions that actual battery life varies significantly with settings and usage. Treat these figures as manufacturer estimates, not a promise of a full day under your workload.
Consider an 11th Edition only after checking the exact configuration
The 13-inch 11th Edition remains relevant if you find a suitable older-generation or business listing, but verify the precise processor and Windows edition. Microsoft lists consumer Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite variants as well as business Intel Core Ultra 5 and 7 variants. Do not assume that an 11th Edition listing has the same compatibility profile as another listing with the same generation name.

Check software and peripheral compatibility before choosing Snapdragon
Snapdragon Surface Pro models run Windows on Arm. Microsoft says most Windows applications run on Arm-based PCs; applications built natively for Arm offer the best performance, while some x86 and x64 apps run through emulation. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every application, driver, or connected device.

This is vendor-published compatibility information. Confirm the specific version, licensing, and school configuration you need before purchasing.

Ask your school’s IT team or the software and device vendors about any specialist course software, exam or security tools, printers, lab equipment, VPNs, or assistive technology you depend on. Driver-dependent applications and peripherals can behave differently on Arm. An Intel configuration may be a better fit when a required app, driver, or peripheral is not supported on Arm, but check the exact requirements rather than relying on processor branding alone.
Budget for the keyboard and decide whether you need a pen
A Surface Pro can be used as a touchscreen tablet without a keyboard, but a keyboard is important if you plan to type essays, reports, or longer assignments in a laptop-like setup. Keyboard compatibility is model-specific: the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard is sold separately and does not fit 13-inch Pro models. For a 13-inch device, confirm the keyboard is explicitly made for the edition you are buying. Check the offer details rather than assuming accessories are included.

A compatible Surface Slim Pen can be useful for handwritten lecture notes, diagrams, and marking up reading. Microsoft supports Surface Slim Pen on current Pro devices. The 12-inch model has integrated pen storage and charging on the rear of the tablet; on 13-inch Pro models, some compatible keyboards provide pen storage and charging. Confirm the fit and storage arrangement for the exact device and keyboard combination before buying.
What school use tells you—and what it does not
Microsoft’s Devices Blog reported on June 25, 2025, that the Aichi Prefectural Board of Education in Japan deployed Surface Pro devices across more than 200 high schools. The post also quotes Sarah Buist, Head of Digital Strategy at Royal Grammar School Newcastle, describing how Surface use changed classroom dynamics. These named examples show institutional use, but they are vendor-reported accounts, not independent evidence that Surface devices improve academic results.

Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Choose the screen size that suits how you read, write, and work across multiple windows.
- Check that every required application, assessment tool, driver, and peripheral supports the specific processor architecture.
- Select RAM and storage based on actual course workloads and file needs.
- Add the cost of the keyboard and, if useful, a compatible pen; verify both fit the exact model and confirm whether a bundle includes them.
- Compare battery claims only when test methods and workloads match, and plan around your own usage.
- Check current regional availability, configuration, price, and return terms; Microsoft’s lineup and older-model stock can vary by market and over time.
