For a dependable starting point, keep your base canvas at your monitor’s native resolution, set output to 1280×720 at 30 fps, and choose a bitrate your streaming platform recommends and your upload connection can sustain. Streamlabs Support recommends 720p30 as a performance-oriented starting point; it is not a universal maximum. Test with the game or content you actually plan to stream, then adjust one setting at a time.
Start with a balanced Streamlabs Desktop setup
There is no single best preset for every computer, game, connection, or destination. Higher resolution and frame rate can improve detail and motion, but they also raise encoding and bandwidth demands. Begin conservatively, check the stream itself, and increase quality only when the computer and connection remain stable.
| Setting | Starting guidance | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Base (canvas) resolution | Use the monitor or content’s native resolution. | The workspace where scenes and sources are composed. |
| Output (scaled) resolution | Start at 1280×720 (720p). | The resolution encoded and delivered to viewers. Streamlabs notes that 1080p has twice as many pixels as 720p and can significantly increase CPU impact. |
| Frame rate | Start at 30 fps for lower-motion content or when prioritizing performance. Try 60 fps for fast gameplay only if the system and connection handle it. | Motion smoothness and the work required to encode each second. |
| Video bitrate | Use the destination platform’s guidance and leave stable upload headroom. | How much video data is sent each second. Too much for the connection can cause buffering, lag, or dropped frames. |
| Encoder | Choose a hardware or software encoder the system can sustain, then test. | Whether the graphics card or processor encodes the stream. Neither choice is best for every machine. |
| Dynamic Bitrate | Consider enabling it if network conditions fluctuate. | Streamlabs says it can adjust bitrate in response to network-related dropped frames; it does not solve every computer-performance problem. |
In Streamlabs Desktop, the quick-start guide places base/output resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video, and bitrate and encoder under Settings > Output. Labels can shift between releases, so use the closest current setting if your interface differs.
Choose bitrate for the platform, not a universal preset
Bitrate targets differ by destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate. A figure recommended for one platform is not automatically right for another. The following Streamlabs examples are Twitch-oriented and assume NVIDIA NVENC, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the Quality preset, and two B-frames; treat them as examples within that scope, not universal recommendations.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | Frame rate | Streamlabs Twitch-oriented example bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 30 fps | 3,000 kbps |
| 720p | 60 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 4,500 kbps |
| 1080p | 60 fps | 6,000 kbps |
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance gives different targets for H.264 ingestion: 8 Mbps for 720p30 or 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not Streamlabs universal settings; YouTube’s recommendations differ by codec, so do not apply its H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265. Check the destination’s current ingest guidance before configuring a stream.
YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. It supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingestion. Its guidance also calls for a connection speed test, a representative test stream, and checking stream health. For another platform, follow that platform’s current codec, bitrate, and keyframe guidance.

Adjust quality without destabilizing the stream
- Set the canvas first. In Settings > Video, use your native monitor resolution for the base canvas. This keeps scene composition independent from the encoded output size.
- Start at 720p30. Set output to 1280×720 and frame rate to 30 fps. This is Streamlabs’ documented performance-oriented starting point, not a ceiling on quality.
- Set the destination’s bitrate and encoding options. In Settings > Output, choose a platform-appropriate bitrate and encoder. Use the platform’s current settings guidance for codec, rate control, keyframe interval, and any encoder-specific options.
- Test with realistic content. Check the preview, microphone and desktop audio meters, alerts or widgets, and the actual stream’s health. Use similar motion and audio to what the live stream will contain; a static scene will not reveal how fast gameplay behaves.
- Change one variable at a time. If the stream is stable and looks good, keep the settings. If not, determine whether the issue is network instability or computer load before changing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate.
- Increase output only after a stable test. Try 60 fps for fast motion or a higher output resolution when the encoder, upload connection, and destination all support it. Re-test after every change.
Diagnose dropped frames, lag, and buffering
“Dropped frames” can describe different bottlenecks. Network instability, encoder overload, and rendering pressure need different fixes; lowering bitrate alone will not repair an overloaded game-and-encoder setup.
Dropped frames when the connection fluctuates
- Check that upload speed is stable, not just high in a single speed-test result.
- Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it reliably.
- Consider Streamlabs Dynamic Bitrate for network variation. It adapts to network conditions, but does not reduce the encoding workload on the computer.
Encoder or rendering lag, or a stuttering game
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate to lower encoding demand.
- Cap the game’s frame rate at a level the computer can sustain while streaming.
- Lower demanding in-game graphics settings if the game and encoder are competing for CPU or GPU resources, especially on a single-PC setup.
Viewers report buffering
- Reduce output resolution or bitrate and test again.
- Consider whether the platform offers viewers transcoded quality options; not every stream or audience has the same viewing conditions.
- Do not raise bitrate just because the local preview looks soft. Check the actual stream and its health first.
Microphone, desktop audio, or capture is missing
- Confirm the intended microphone and desktop audio devices are selected in the current audio settings.
- Speak or play audio and confirm the correct mixer meters respond.
- Run a private or unlisted test where the destination allows it, and verify the stream’s audio and capture before going public.
Streaming to more than one destination
Check the bitrate and keyframe constraints for each destination. Streamlabs’ multistream guidance says bitrate should not exceed the lowest platform maximum, but the limits depend on the platforms and their current rules. Recheck each destination rather than assuming one platform’s settings fit them all.

Keep copyright and YouTube live eligibility in mind
Encoding settings do not grant permission to use music, video, or other protected material. Before streaming, confirm you have the rights or permission needed for every included source and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules. A technically healthy stream can still face a copyright claim or platform restriction. For practical preflight checks, use the copyright safety checklist.
