To keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a local power cut, back up the entire chain that makes it work: the Pi, its video source, and the router and modem or ONT carrying the internet connection. A UPS can bridge a mains interruption only while it can supply that combined load; it cannot keep an ISP network operating if the access network itself fails.
What must stay powered
Map the stream from source to internet before choosing a backup. Depending on your setup, that may include the Raspberry Pi, camera or other video source, capture device, switches, converters, router, and modem or optical network terminal (ONT). If any required device loses power, the stream can stop even when the Pi remains on.

- Write down the exact Pi model and every device that must stay online.
- Check each device’s input voltage, current, connector, and—where possible—measured power draw.
- Include conversion losses and battery ageing when estimating how long the complete setup may run.
- Measure the intended configuration under load instead of relying on a UPS product’s headline runtime.
The required backup capacity and runtime depend on this equipment, its combined load, and how long the outage lasts. There is no single capacity that is right for every setup.
Choose a power plan for the Pi and network gear
Match the Pi supply to its model
Raspberry Pi’s official setup table lists 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5, 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, and 5 V at 2.5 A for Pi 3 and earlier models. Check the current requirements for your exact board and attached peripherals before selecting a supply; the documentation also cautions that voltage loss in a removable cable can matter. Raspberry Pi Ltd. recommends: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Back up every essential device
A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT is one possible Pi-specific component, but do not assume a Pi-only HAT also powers a router or ONT. For each UPS or battery backup, check output voltage and current, connector compatibility, load limits, changeover behavior, battery replaceability and health monitoring, and whether it signals low battery for an orderly shutdown. The cited UPSafePi manual applies to Raspberry Pi 4B; it does not establish compatibility with every Pi model or runtime for a complete streaming chain.
You may use separate backup units for the Pi and network equipment, or a unit that can safely power all the required devices. In either case, verify that each output matches the device it serves and that the combined load is within the backup unit’s limits. A UPS only bridges an outage for as long as its battery can support that load.

Set up the FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream
Choose encoder settings for your actual upload
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in FFmpeg to suit the measured upload capacity at the streaming location. YouTube recommends testing the connection, running a preflight with motion and audio representative of the real stream, and watching stream health messages. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. A bitrate that works on one connection is not guaranteed to work on another: available upload capacity and competing traffic vary. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the YouTube stream key and ingest settings provided for your stream, and keep the key private. Confirm the configured resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol in your FFmpeg command before relying on the setup. The right values depend on your connection and content, so test with the actual source rather than treating a generic preset as a guarantee.

- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Configure FFmpeg recovery, but do not mistake it for backup power
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer can be configured to attempt recovery after certain output failures, including network-output problems. Recovery behavior can include whether to retry, the interval between attempts, and a maximum number of attempts. The available options and their defaults vary by FFmpeg version and build, so check the documentation or help output for the FFmpeg installation on your Pi before adding flags. Consult the FFmpeg formats documentation.
A retry can help when an output connection briefly fails, but it cannot restore power to a dead device or repair an unavailable ISP path. Even a successful reconnect may leave a visible interruption on YouTube.

Test the setup before depending on it
- Run the full chain. Stream from the intended video source through the actual Pi, router, modem or ONT, and any other required equipment.
- Test UPS changeover. Simulate a mains interruption safely and confirm that the transfer does not reboot devices or break the network connection.
- Test a brief network interruption. Check whether FFmpeg attempts recovery and whether YouTube reports the stream as healthy after reconnecting.
- Observe real runtime. Measure how long the battery sustains the complete chain under the load you intend to use.
- Plan for low battery. Decide whether to stop FFmpeg cleanly and shut down the Pi before reserve is exhausted.
Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power loss can corrupt boot storage. Battery backup or a planned orderly shutdown reduces exposure, but choosing a different microSD card does not keep a stream running during a power cut. See Raspberry Pi’s setup and power guidance.
Troubleshoot the failures that can still stop a stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The Pi stays on, but the stream goes offline during an outage. | The camera or source, capture device, router, modem/ONT, or another required box is not on backup power. | Trace the complete chain and include every essential device in the backup plan. |
| The Pi reboots or becomes unstable under load. | The supply, cable, UPS output, or connector may not meet the board and peripheral requirements. | Confirm the exact model’s voltage and current requirements, check cable voltage loss, and verify that the UPS output and connectors are suitable. |
| FFmpeg does not recover after a brief connection loss. | The installed FFmpeg build may not support the configured recovery options, or the failure may exceed the retry behavior. | Check options against the local build and logs, test a brief network failure, and remember that recovery cannot fix an unavailable internet path or power source. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the output is unstable. | Encoder settings may exceed available upload capacity, or competing traffic may reduce it. | Test upload performance at the location, adjust resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit it, then repeat the preflight and monitor YouTube stream health. |
| Boot storage is corrupted after power returns. | The Pi may have lost power abruptly while writing to storage. | Use a battery or low-battery plan that stops FFmpeg and shuts down cleanly where possible; sudden-power-loss risk remains a reason to test the shutdown behavior. |

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, rather than stream a camera or live source from the Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay powered at home. It supports whatever quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Your local power and internet still matter for uploading and managing the stream, but not for keeping the cloud playback running.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not live camera input. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
