OBS Studio is a sensible first streaming app to try on a low-end PC, but no software is universally the lightest. The load depends on your game, CPU and GPU, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and how much is in your scene. Start with a conservative setup, test it with the game you actually play, and check what is limiting performance before buying hardware.
What matters more than the app’s name
Streaming software has to capture and encode video while the game is also using the computer’s resources. OBS says that meeting its compatibility requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record smoothly; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A PC that handles a simple desktop scene may struggle once a demanding game, animated overlays, and browser sources are running.

Encoder: CPU or GPU
x264 is a software encoder that uses the CPU. Hardware encoders such as NVENC use a dedicated component in a supported GPU and can shift encoding work away from the CPU. That may help when the processor is the bottleneck, but it is not a guarantee of better quality or smoother performance on every computer. Availability depends on the actual GPU, its generation, and drivers; do not assume an older graphics card has a useful hardware encoder. See the OBS system requirements and OBS hardware-encoding guide.

Output and scene complexity
Higher output resolution and frame rate require more work. So can complex scenes with animated overlays, browser sources, and other elements. For diagnosis, begin with a simple scene and modest output rather than trying to preserve a high-resolution, high-frame-rate stream at all costs.

Which streaming software should you try?
The published requirements below are vendor compatibility statements, not equivalent-machine speed tests. The official information reviewed does not establish which app uses the fewest resources on the same low-end PC.
| Software | What the vendor publishes | Good reason to consider it | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Requirements depend on workload; OBS points users to its Auto-Configuration Wizard. | A flexible first option if you are willing to configure and test it. | That OBS is faster than every alternative on identical hardware. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Minimum: Windows 11 or macOS 12 and later, and 8 GB RAM. Its setup guide recommends 720p at 30 fps for performance. | Consider it if you value an integrated setup and overlays. | That its minimum requirements mean it will run a demanding game smoothly on your PC. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, second-generation Core i5 or equivalent, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce- or Radeon-class GPU with DirectX 10.1 support. It recommends at least 5 Mbps upload for HD quality. | Consider it if you want its production features. | That its listed requirements demonstrate lower resource use. The upload recommendation is XSplit’s, not a universal rule for every service or configuration. |
| PRISM Live Studio | Windows minimum: Windows 10/11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1060 or equivalent, and Intel Core i3-9100 or i5-7600 or above. | An alternative if its interface or platform integrations suit you. | That it is the lightest choice; the published GPU minimum means it should not automatically be assumed suitable for older integrated graphics. |
Requirements and supported operating systems can change. Check each vendor’s current pages before installing: Streamlabs system requirements, XSplit requirements, and PRISM Live Studio FAQ. Streamlabs’ requirements and setup recommendations are published vendor guidance, not independent performance benchmarks.

Set up a low-end PC for a test stream
- Check your system and encoder options. Confirm the app supports your operating system, then open its encoder settings and note which encoders are actually available. Do not choose an encoder based on a name alone: availability depends on your hardware and drivers.
- Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard or a conservative preset. The wizard is intended to suggest settings for your system. Streamlabs recommends 720p at 30 fps as a performance-oriented starting point; treat it as a test setting, not a promise or universal optimum. See the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard guide and Streamlabs setup guidance.
- Compare encoders in a short test. If a supported hardware encoder is available, try it and compare with x264 using the same game, scene, and output settings. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but your GPU may already be busy rendering the game. Keep whichever configuration produces the more stable result on your machine.
- Simplify the scene while diagnosing. Temporarily remove animated overlays and unnecessary browser sources. Close programs you do not need, then test with the game running. Add scene elements back one at a time so you can see whether a particular source changes performance.
- Test the actual workload before going live for real. A menu or idle desktop is not a useful substitute for a busy moment in the game. Check whether the game itself becomes choppy, the stream output stutters, or the connection has trouble; these point to different causes.
Troubleshoot stutter without guessing
- The game becomes choppy while encoding: reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and compare a supported hardware encoder with x264. If the GPU is already heavily occupied by the game, hardware encoding may not resolve the limit.
- The stream stutters but the game remains smooth: repeat the test with a simpler scene and lower output settings. Compare encoder options and check whether the issue appears in a local recording or only during the live connection; the latter may point to network conditions rather than rendering load.
- The problem starts after adding overlays or browser sources: disable those elements one by one. Scene complexity is a workload factor, and Streamlabs also notes that animated overlays, plugins, and other running programs can require adjustments.
- A hardware encoder is missing: check the GPU model, driver support, and the app’s current encoder options. A hardware encoder is not available on every older GPU.
- It runs poorly even at conservative settings: identify whether the game, encoding, or network is the constraint before spending money. The available vendor requirements do not justify a specific GPU purchase for an unspecified PC.
When a capture card is—and is not—the answer
A capture card can be part of a dual-PC arrangement: XSplit’s documented workflow sends video from a gaming PC to a separate streaming PC. That is a two-computer setup, not a general fix for a single low-end PC. It adds another machine and setup steps, so do not buy a capture card before establishing that you actually want a dual-PC workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than live gameplay from your computer, StreamNeo is a different kind of tool from OBS and the desktop apps above. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream a camera feed or send streams to other platforms.
