Add a limit only when you need bandwidth available for other people or online play. For a large RPG, also check the download queue, update timing, available drive space, and whether Steam is pausing downloads when a game launches—those settings address different problems, and none guarantees a faster server or internet connection.
Set the bandwidth limit to match your priority
Steam’s bandwidth limit is a ceiling, not a speed boost. Leave it unrestricted when your goal is to let Steam use available bandwidth. Set a cap when the download would otherwise interfere with video calls, other household traffic, or online play. A cap can make the download take longer, but it can leave more capacity for those other activities.

In Steam, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and look for the bandwidth-limit control. Check the units before entering a value: Steam’s limit follows the client’s bytes-versus-bits display preference. Bytes and bits are not interchangeable, so a number that looks right in one unit can represent a different rate in the other. See Steam Support’s Setting Client Rates for the rate and unit details.

Put the RPG first in the queue
Use Steam’s Download Manager to monitor progress and reorder queued downloads. If several games or updates are waiting, move the RPG you want first to the top rather than expecting a bandwidth setting to prioritize it automatically.

Automatic update scheduling is useful for routine maintenance: set a local-time window that suits your connection and availability. Scheduling concerns automatic updates; it does not mean every download you start manually will wait for that window. Per-game update controls can prioritize one title or defer its automatic updates until you launch it. If an update is pending when you launch the game, Steam may still require the update before play. Choose whether downloads continue during gameplay
Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game by default. To keep a download running, go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. This is convenient when you do not need the connection for a demanding online session. If downloading affects an online game, let the download wait or apply a bandwidth limit instead. Steam documents the default behavior and option in Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

Try another download region only when troubleshooting
Steam normally detects your region and selects content servers. If a download is unusually slow or failing, try a different nearby region and compare the results. A local content server can be slow, overloaded, or experiencing a hardware problem, but switching regions is a troubleshooting test—not a guaranteed optimization. Make sure the library drive has room
A download or installation that lacks destination space cannot be fixed by changing network settings. Steam lets you manage Library folders on alternate drives and move installed games between Library folders without downloading them again. If the drive holding the RPG is full, choose another suitable library location or move an existing installation. If the download is stuck or an installation fails, start with the less disruptive checks before clearing cached data:
- Restart Steam, then restart the computer if the problem persists.
- Try a nearby alternate download region and check whether the transfer improves.
- Clear Steam’s download cache if the issue continues. This does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward. Follow Steam Support’s Clear download cache instructions.
- Repair the Library folder if Steam reports a library or installation problem.
- Verify local files for an installed game when applicable.

A practical setup for one large RPG
- Leave the bandwidth limit unrestricted if maximum throughput is the priority; cap it only to share bandwidth with other activity.
- Move the RPG to the front of the Download Manager queue.
- Enable downloads during gameplay only if you are comfortable sharing bandwidth while playing.
- Check that the selected Library drive has enough free space; use another Library drive if needed.
- Change download region only if the current download is slow or failing, then compare results.
