Start by checking whether your Steam Deck is the LCD or OLED model, then lower refresh rate and frame limit to the lowest settings that still feel good and run steadily in each game. A lower cap can reduce system demand, but there is no universal recipe or reliable promise of extra hours: results depend on the game and how you play.
First, identify your Steam Deck model
The two models have different displays and batteries, so their refresh-rate ceilings and Valve’s estimated playtime ranges differ.

These are broad manufacturer estimates, not predictions for a particular game. The larger OLED battery does not translate into a fixed runtime advantage: workload and display use vary. See Valve’s OLED specifications and LCD specifications.
Which settings matter most for a longer session?
Lower the refresh rate
In the Steam Deck’s device or performance settings, reduce the display refresh rate from its current value. The LCD model tops out at 60Hz and the OLED model at 90Hz; setting an application to run above the display’s cap does not improve performance and may drain charge faster, according to Steam Support. If the menu labels on your Deck differ, check the current Quick Access performance controls and your installed SteamOS version.

Pair it with a frame-rate limit the game can sustain
Set a frame limit that the game can hold consistently rather than choosing a high target it frequently misses. Valve’s SteamOS 3.2 notes explain that a lower frame limit reduces system demand and saves battery compared with a higher cap. They use 40Hz versus 30Hz as an example: 40Hz uses more battery than 30Hz, but less than a game capped at a higher refresh, while offering a subjectively smoother experience. That is an example from the 2022 release notes, not a guarantee for every game or a claim that one setting is best for everyone.
Refresh and frame controls work together: try a lower refresh setting and a compatible frame limit, then choose the lowest combination that still feels acceptable in that specific game. Valve has described saving refresh behavior per game; because menus and options can change, look for the current per-game controls in Quick Access rather than relying on an old menu path. Valve’s SteamOS 3.2 release notes describe the settings and trade-off.

Reduce brightness when comfortable
Lower screen brightness to a comfortable level when your surroundings allow it. This is a sensible adjustment, but Valve’s cited specifications do not establish how much runtime it adds, so treat it as a practical tweak rather than a quantified saving.
How to tune settings without guessing
- Open the game you want to optimize and note your model’s current battery estimate under your usual play conditions.
- Open Quick Access and go to the performance controls. Lower the refresh rate, then choose a frame limit the game can sustain steadily.
- Play under similar conditions and observe the battery estimate and how the game feels. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which trade-off you prefer.
- Repeat for other games. A demanding 3D game and a lighter 2D game may call for different settings; save per-game behavior if that option is available in your SteamOS version.
For a useful comparison, keep the game, brightness, and play conditions as consistent as possible. The estimate is a guide, not a controlled measurement, and the official sources do not establish a fixed number of hours or percentage saved by these changes.

What the battery estimates do—and do not—tell you
Valve gives broad ranges: 2–8 hours for LCD and 3–12 hours for OLED. Its original hardware page also said lighter tasks such as streaming, smaller 2D games, or web browsing could reach approximately 7–8 hours on the original 40Wh Deck. That is an example for lighter use, not a settings test or a prediction for a current game. Valve’s original Steam Deck hardware page provides that context.

Only if your goal includes long-term battery health, not a longer session on the next charge. Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 notes say the maximum charge setting can limit charging to 80% and may benefit a Deck that is often docked or rarely depleted. Because it leaves less charge available at the start, it works against maximizing the length of an individual unplugged session. Find it at Settings > Power. Valve’s SteamOS 3.7.8 release notes explain the battery-health use case.
