Best State of Decay 2 Settings for Performance and Visibility

Start with State of Decay 2’s 70° field-of-view default, then tune gamma, motion blur, and interface visibility for comfort. Learn what the official settings can—and cannot—do for performance.

For a practical starting point, keep the field of view at its 70° default, then adjust gamma and motion blur for readability and comfort. Keep the HUD, minimap, and objective icons visible if they help you navigate. These controls can improve how the game looks and feels, but Undead Labs does not publish evidence that a particular combination increases frame rate.

Start with a visibility-first setup

There is no developer-certified “best” preset or published per-setting FPS test for State of Decay 2. Tune visibility and comfort first, then assess performance on your own platform rather than assuming a visual change will make the game run faster.

Setting Starting point What to adjust
Field of View 70° default Move up or down in small steps to find a view that feels comfortable on your display.
Gamma Adjust for your display and room Make dark areas readable without making the image look washed out; Undead Labs does not prescribe a numeric value.
Motion blur Try Low or Off if movement blur bothers you Choose the level that makes camera movement and scenery easiest for you to read.
HUD, minimap, objective icons On if they help you orient Turn off elements only if you prefer a less cluttered screen.

How to set field of view

Undead Labs’ Update 29 notes specify a 40°–100° range, with 70° as the default. To change it, open Settings > Video > Field of View. The developer’s accessibility page describes the range as a percentage, but Update 29 gives the range in degrees; the degree values are used here because they are the more specific numeric guidance.

Start at 70° and make small adjustments. A wider view shows more of the surroundings, but whether that feels clearer depends on factors such as screen size and viewing distance, as well as personal preference. There is no universally right value.

Gamma

Gamma changes in-game brightness. Adjust it until dark scenes remain readable on your display in your usual room lighting, without washing out the image. Undead Labs lists gamma among the visual accessibility options, but does not name a recommended setting or numeric target.

Motion blur

If blur when turning the camera makes scenery or targets harder for you to read, try Low or Off. Undead Labs documents Off, Low, and High in its accessibility options and says a motion-blur toggle was added to Video settings on PC and Xbox. Turning blur down is a comfort and visibility choice; the documentation does not say that disabling it improves frame rate.

HUD and navigation markers

HUD elements, the minimap, and in-world objective icons have visibility controls. Keep the ones that help you stay oriented; hide elements only if you prefer a cleaner screen. These options affect interface visibility, not a documented performance setting.

What these settings can—and cannot—do for performance

The available developer documentation does not provide a universal PC preset, current hardware-specific recommendations, controlled benchmarks, or FPS gains for individual visual settings. That means a lower motion-blur setting, narrower field of view, or hidden HUD should not be presented as a guaranteed performance fix.

For historical console context, Undead Labs said Update 23 improvements delivered 60 frames per second at full 4K on Xbox Series X and 1080p on Series S. This was a developer statement about those consoles and that update, not a guarantee for every current console configuration or a recommendation for PC settings. Read the Update 23 patch notes.

Troubleshoot poor performance on PC

If performance remains poor, collect information about what your PC is doing while the game runs rather than changing settings based on an assumed FPS benefit.

  1. Run State of Decay 2 and observe CPU, memory, and GPU usage while the issue is occurring.
  2. Note any unusually high or notable usage, along with when the slowdown happens.
  3. Include those observations in a support submission, following Undead Labs’ PC support guidance.
  4. If the issue may depend on a patch, open Settings and check the game version shown in the lower-left corner. The developer explains this in its version-number help page.
