Software KVM alternatives share keyboard and mouse control over a network, but they usually do not switch video. Choose Logitech Flow if you already own compatible Logitech peripherals, Synergy or Deskflow for a broader cross-platform setup, ShareMouse for Mac-and-Windows LAN sharing, Mouse Without Borders for a Windows-only desk, and Hydra or Multiplicity only after checking their current maturity and feature limits. If one monitor must change between computers, retain a monitor input switch or use a hardware KVM alongside the software.
What a software KVM replaces—and what it cannot
A hardware KVM physically routes a keyboard, mouse and one or more display signals between computers. Software alternatives install an agent on each computer and send keyboard and mouse events across the local network. Moving the pointer to an edge, pressing a hotkey or selecting a screen then transfers control to another machine.

The result is one working keyboard and mouse across several computers without repeatedly unplugging USB cables. Clipboard synchronization is common; file transfer is product- and platform-dependent. Display output is a separate problem: Synergy describes its product accurately as working “like a software KVM, but without video.” Your monitors remain connected to their respective computers unless you add a display switch, change monitor inputs manually or keep a hardware KVM for video.

“Cross-platform” does not guarantee that every operating-system version or feature is supported. Check the current documentation before installing on Linux, a newly released macOS version or a managed Windows build.
How to choose the right approach
Start with the operating systems
List every computer you want to control. A Windows-and-Mac desk can use Flow, Synergy or ShareMouse if the specific releases support both systems. A Linux computer narrows the practical shortlist to tools that currently document Linux support, such as Deskflow or Hydra, or to another solution verified for your distribution. A Windows-only desk can also consider Mouse Without Borders or Multiplicity.
Decide whether you can buy or replace peripherals
Flow is the outlier because it depends on compatible Logitech hardware and the Logi Options+ application. The mouse must be paired to both computers on different device channels. The other options generally work with the keyboard and mouse you already have, subject to their own operating-system and driver requirements.

Flow requires both computers on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. Synergy and ShareMouse also describe local-network operation. A guest Wi-Fi, client-isolation setting, VPN, firewall or corporate segmentation can prevent the computers from discovering or reaching one another. If you cannot allow the required local traffic, software sharing may be impractical regardless of features.

Match transfer needs to the product
Clipboard synchronization normally means text, and in some products images. File transfer is a distinct feature: Flow advertises copying files, ShareMouse advertises drag-and-drop, and Hydra documentation describes file transfer. Confirm whether your chosen version transfers files, which file types are accepted and whether transfers are limited to a local network. Do not assume that a copied file behaves like copied text.
Choose your switching gesture
Edge switching feels natural when monitors are arranged side by side. Hotkeys are safer when a pointer could accidentally cross screens, when displays are stacked vertically or when a full-screen application captures the pointer. Synergy exposes both hotkeys and screen-layout configuration; other products may offer different controls.
Separate convenience from security evidence
Synergy advertises TLS/SSL encryption, ShareMouse advertises optional AES encryption, and Hydra describes encrypted relay connections. These are vendor or project claims, not independent security-audit results. Determine whether traffic stays on your LAN or passes through a relay, whether encryption is enabled by default, how devices authenticate and whether your organization permits the software.
Logitech Flow: easiest when your hardware already fits
Flow moves control to another computer when a supported Logitech mouse reaches the edge of the screen; the keyboard follows. Logitech also says it can copy text, images and files between computers. The application is Logi Options+ and must be installed on both machines.

- Ergonomic mouse designed for comfort, MX Master 4 for Mac keeps you in flow with a natural tilt, intuitive buttons, and a thumb scroll wheel that reduces hand stress for fluid navigation
Flow setup
- Install the current Logi Options+ release on both computers.
- Pair the compatible mouse with the first computer, then pair it with the second using a separate device channel.
- Connect both computers to the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- Open the Flow settings in Logi Options+ on each computer and enable the computers you want to arrange.
- Drag the on-screen computer representations to match the physical monitor positions, then test an edge crossing.
- Test keyboard focus, text copying and a small file before relying on the setup for production work.
Logitech’s supported-device listings include the MX Master 4, but compatibility lists change. Check the current list before buying or assuming that a particular mouse revision supports Flow. Flow does not remove the need for a display switch when one monitor must show different computers.
When Flow is a poor fit
- You use Linux or an unsupported operating system.
- Your mouse is not on the current supported-device list.
- Company policy blocks Logi Options+ or peer-to-peer local-network communication.
- You need keyboard and mouse sharing with no Logitech hardware purchase.
Synergy: configurable commercial sharing across platforms
Synergy is designed for keyboard and mouse sharing on a local network. Its feature description includes clipboard sharing, configurable hotkeys, screen-layout configuration and TLS/SSL encryption. It is an input-sharing product, not a video KVM. Synergy also identifies Deskflow as its upstream open-source project.
Typical Synergy deployment
- Install the current Synergy build on every computer and allow it through each operating system’s firewall when prompted.
- Choose the computer whose physical keyboard and mouse you will use as the server or primary input machine; configure the others as clients according to the current release’s terminology.
- Give each screen a distinct name and place it in the software layout to mirror the real monitor arrangement.
- Enable the required clipboard and hotkey options, then select the advertised TLS/SSL protection if the build presents it as a choice.
- Start the service on the primary machine and connect each client over the same reachable network.
- Test edge transitions, hotkeys, clipboard behavior and reconnects after sleep before making the arrangement permanent.
Use Synergy when you need a deliberate layout rather than a peripheral-specific ecosystem. Confirm the current installer, operating-system matrix and licensing terms before deployment; exact features can differ by release.

Deskflow is the open-source project identified as Synergy’s upstream. It is relevant when source availability, community development or avoiding a commercial client matters more than a guided setup. The project’s current release support, packaging and feature parity must be checked for your operating systems.

What to verify before choosing Deskflow
- Whether a maintained build exists for each operating system and architecture in your desk.
- How the current release names and configures the server and client roles.
- Whether clipboard formats, hotkeys, screen layouts and encryption match your needs.
- How updates are delivered and whether your distribution’s package lags behind the project.
- Whether your organization permits unsigned or community-maintained software.
Deskflow can be a strong fit for technically comfortable users, but “open source” does not by itself promise easier installation, long-term support or identical behavior across platforms.
ShareMouse: Mac-and-Windows LAN sharing with file drag-and-drop
ShareMouse states that it sends input over a local LAN and supports clipboard sharing, file drag-and-drop and optional AES-encrypted traffic. Its site describes a freeware edition for personal use. Verify the current edition’s limits and license terms before using it commercially or across more computers than the current allowance.
ShareMouse deployment checklist
- Install the current ShareMouse application on every Mac and Windows computer.
- Place the computers on a network where they can reach one another directly; avoid guest networks that isolate clients.
- Approve the application in the host firewall only if your organization’s policy allows it.
- Arrange the virtual screens to match the physical desk and choose edge movement or the available hotkey behavior.
- Enable AES protection if the current build exposes it and your policy requires encrypted LAN traffic.
- Test a text clipboard, an image and a small drag-and-drop file separately; each may use a different transfer path.
ShareMouse is worth considering when both macOS and Windows are present and file movement is part of the workflow. Treat the freeware label as a licensing description, not a guarantee that every feature or number of computers is unrestricted.
Mouse Without Borders: a Windows-only option through PowerToys
Mouse Without Borders is available through Microsoft’s PowerToys ecosystem and is intended for Windows computers. A reviewed description reports clipboard sharing and support for up to four PCs, but current installation instructions, supported Windows versions and exact limits should be verified in Microsoft’s current documentation before deployment.
Best Value
- Logitech MX Master 3S Bluetooth Edition is a Bluetooth only mouse, and does not come with any USB receiver / adapter or charging cable
- 8K DPI Any-surface tracking: Use MX Master 3S cordless computer mouse to work on any surface - even glass (1) - with an 8000 DPI sensor with customizable sensitivity
- Quiet Clicks: MX Master 3S Bluetooth mouse with Quiet Clicks - offering the same satisfying feel but with 90% less click noise (2)
- Magspeed scrolling: A computer mouse with remarkable speed, precision, and near silence - MagSpeed scrolling is 90% faster (3), 87% more precise (4), and ultra quiet.
- Ergonomic design: Work comfortably with a precision mouse featuring a silhouette crafted for a more natural wrist posture and optimally placed thumb controls
Practical setup pattern
- Install the current PowerToys release on each Windows computer.
- Open the Mouse Without Borders module and generate or enter the security key used to pair the machines.
- Enter each computer’s name or pairing details exactly as shown by the module.
- Arrange the computers in the same order as their physical displays and select the preferred edge or hotkey behavior.
- Test clipboard transfer and reconnect behavior after locking, sleeping and waking the PCs.
This is a sensible first experiment for a Windows-only desk because it avoids buying a special mouse. It is not suitable for a Mac, Linux or mixed-platform arrangement unless every non-Windows computer is replaced or controlled by another method.
Hydra: promising cross-platform project, but check maturity
Hydra’s repository describes macOS, Windows and Linux support, edge-of-screen movement, encrypted relay connections and file transfer. Those are project claims rather than independent validation. Assess release frequency, issue activity, signed installers, documentation and support for your exact operating-system versions before making Hydra the only input path for important work.
Questions to answer before daily use
- Does the current release provide installers for all three platforms you need?
- Can devices connect directly on your LAN, and when is a relay used?
- What authentication protects the relay and how are devices removed?
- Are file transfers encrypted end to end, and where are temporary files stored?
- How does the application recover after a laptop changes networks or wakes from sleep?
Multiplicity: investigate the Windows feature tiers carefully
Multiplicity is another Windows option described as providing KVM-style switching, with additional functions in higher tiers. The exact tier limits and current pricing were not established in the available material, so check the vendor’s current documentation before budgeting or promising features such as clipboard, file transfer, multi-monitor support or remote control.
Use the same evaluation process as for any other Windows-only product: confirm supported Windows releases, whether a local network is required, how systems authenticate, what encryption is enabled and whether your license covers home, business or multi-PC use.
Installation and network troubleshooting
The second computer does not appear
- Confirm both computers are on the same non-isolated Wi-Fi or wired network.
- Turn off a guest-network connection and check whether a VPN is forcing traffic through another interface.
- Allow the application through the private-network firewall profile, subject to your organization’s policy.
- Verify that the computers are awake, not in airplane mode and using the names shown by the sharing application.
- Restart the sharing service after changing the network or firewall rule.
The pointer crosses to the wrong screen
- Rearrange the virtual screens to match the physical left-right or top-bottom positions.
- Check for a monitor edge that is only partly aligned; some layouts require the pointer to cross through the aligned segment.
- Use a hotkey when full-screen applications or unusual monitor geometry make edge switching unreliable.
Keyboard input stops after sleep or lock
- Unlock the receiving computer locally once, then restart the sharing client if it does not reconnect.
- Check whether the operating system disabled the network adapter or put the application to sleep.
- Re-enable the service after major operating-system updates and confirm that the firewall rule still exists.
Clipboard or file transfer fails
- Test plain text first, then an image, then a small file; this identifies which transfer type is failing.
- Check whether the product treats file transfer as a separate permission or feature.
- Look for endpoint-security software blocking clipboard monitoring, drag-and-drop or temporary files.
- Do not paste sensitive data until you understand whether traffic stays local or uses a relay.
Input feels unsafe on a managed network
Stop and involve the administrator rather than bypassing firewall controls. Ask which ports, discovery methods and encryption modes the product uses, whether a relay is involved and whether clipboard or file transfer can be disabled. A hardware KVM may be the safer policy-compliant choice when software installation or network traffic is prohibited.
When software sharing is enough—and when to keep hardware
Software is usually enough when
- You are comfortable keeping every computer on a reachable network.
- The monitors can remain connected to their individual computers or you are willing to change monitor inputs manually.
- You want clipboard or occasional file transfer in addition to shared input.
- Your operating systems and workplace policy are supported by the chosen application.
Keep or add a hardware KVM when
- One monitor must switch sources at the same time as the keyboard and mouse.
- The computers cannot share a network or cannot run background software.
- You need input switching before an operating system starts, such as for firmware screens or recovery environments.
- Security policy forbids clipboard synchronization or network-based input.
- You require a predictable physical disconnect from one computer.
A hybrid arrangement is often practical: leave the keyboard and mouse under software control for normal work, while using a monitor input switch or hardware KVM for video and pre-boot access.
Quick Recap
A decision checklist before you commit
- Write down every operating system and version in the setup.
- Mark whether you already own compatible Logitech hardware; if not, remove Flow from the shortlist unless buying that hardware is acceptable.
- Confirm that all computers can communicate on the same permitted network.
- Decide whether you need text only, images, whole files or no clipboard transfer.
- Choose edge movement, hotkeys or both based on your monitor arrangement.
- Review each product’s encryption, relay behavior and authentication claims instead of assuming LAN traffic is automatically private.
- Verify current release support, license terms and feature limits immediately before installation.
- Test locking, sleep, network changes, full-screen applications and a failed connection before depending on the setup.
- Decide separately how video will switch; software keyboard-and-mouse sharing does not solve that requirement.
