These tools solve different planning problems rather than offering interchangeable versions of one feature. | Later | Visual-first planning, especially when previewing a feed matters | Hootsuite’s 2026 comparison lists $25/month. Choose Buffer for a simple publishing routine
Buffer is the clearest starting point when the main job is organizing and scheduling posts across a few channels. TechRadar’s 2026 review reports that the free plan covers up to three channels, with a queue limit of ten posts per channel at a time. In that same review snapshot, Essentials adds unlimited scheduling and analytics. Those limits and features can change, so confirm them on the plan you would actually buy.

Price it by channel count: the cited Essentials and Team rates are per channel, not one flat team subscription. A low per-channel entry price can add up as you connect more profiles.

Choose Later when seeing the feed matters
Later is the visual-planning option in the cited comparisons, with visual Instagram feed planning highlighted by Hootsuite. Later’s own March 2026 article describes Starter as including visual planning and analytics, but its listed annual-billing price differs from Hootsuite’s monthly figure. Treat those as separate snapshots, and verify the plan, billing frequency, and regional checkout price rather than combining them.
Choose Planable when approvals are the bottleneck
Planable’s distinctive fit is collaboration around drafts and approvals. Hootsuite describes multi-step approval workflows, while Later also highlights visual approvals and says analytics are limited. It is worth considering when a post routinely waits for teammates or clients to review it, but teams that depend on detailed performance reporting should assess that capability separately.

Choose Metricool when analytics shape decisions
Later describes Metricool as analytics-focused and calls out competitor benchmarking. The cited comparisons indicate free availability, while the paid entry price varies by source snapshot. Check limits on brands or channels and the reporting available in the tier you need; the label “analytics tool” does not establish that every report or benchmarking feature is included.

Consider a larger suite only for a larger requirement
Perch by Hootsuite and Sprout Social appear in the cited comparisons as higher-priced options associated with broader team or enterprise needs. Perch is described with publishing, AI content, and analytics; Sprout Social is associated with deeper analytics and CRM-style contact management. Their cited starting prices use different billing units, so they are not directly comparable to each other or to a small-team scheduler without modeling the actual seats, channels, and required features.
How to compare tools before committing
- List the accounts and formats you publish. Write down every network and format the team actually needs, including Stories, Reels, and long-form video where relevant. Confirm whether each tool publishes natively or requires a notification or manual handoff for a particular format; support varies by tool. Hootsuite’s comparison discusses tool coverage at its social media management tools page.
- Map the review process. Count the people who draft, comment, approve, or need client access. Check permissions and the number or type of approval steps in the plan, rather than assuming that a shared calendar is a complete approval workflow. Planable is positioned around approvals; TechRadar’s Buffer review also discusses collaboration in its Team tier at its review.
- Define the analytics you will use. Separate basic post metrics from competitor benchmarking, a unified inbox, and advanced reporting. Compare those specific needs with the tier’s documented features; scheduling access alone does not guarantee the reporting depth you want.
- Calculate the bill using the real team. Multiply per-channel pricing by connected channels and per-seat or per-user pricing by people who need access. For workspace or brand pricing, identify the limits and upgrade points. Include whether the quoted amount requires annual billing, and verify current terms with the vendor.
- Trial a representative workflow. Use a few real draft posts, the formats you publish, and your actual approval chain. Confirm what happens at scheduling and publishing time before moving the entire content calendar.
What “free” does—and does not—tell you
A free plan can be a practical way for a tiny team to check whether a scheduler fits its routine, but it is not evidence that all needed channels, queue capacity, analytics, or collaboration controls are included. TechRadar’s 2026 Buffer review reports a free allowance of up to three channels and ten queued posts per channel at a time. The cited comparison tables also show free availability for Metricool, but do not establish a universal set of free-plan limits. Check the current plan details before building a calendar around an allowance.

How to make the final choice
Start with the bottleneck, not a “best overall” label. For routine scheduling, compare Buffer’s channel-based cost with the number of profiles you manage. For visual feed planning, evaluate Later and verify its current price and plan. For approval-heavy work, assess Planable’s review flow. For analytics, inspect Metricool’s plan limits and reporting. For recurring evergreen content, check SocialBee’s queues. In every case, confirm current network and format support and test the team’s real workflow before migrating.
