The best smartwatch health and activity views are the ones that put the metrics you actually check within a glance or tap—and their names and capabilities depend on your watch. On Apple Watch, choose from watch-face complications and Smart Stack widgets; Samsung documents Health widgets, while Garmin’s widget loop is model-specific. Start with one daily activity measure on your main view, then add only the health summaries you regularly use.
What makes a smartwatch health widget useful?
There is no universal, tested ranking of smartwatch widgets across brands. A practical choice depends on how quickly a view exposes the information, whether it helps you take a next step, and whether it works on your exact watch and software.

- At-a-glance fit: Does the metric sit on the watch face, appear in a scrollable stack, or require opening a separate view?
- Actionability: Can you open the relevant app or start an activity from the view, or does it only display a number?
- Goal relevance: Does it show the one or two measures you routinely check, such as activity progress or sleep information?
- Customization: Can you choose the metric, layout, or ordering?
- Compatibility: Check the watch model, operating-system version, face or widget support, phone ecosystem, and geographic availability.
Use these criteria to choose a setup for your needs, not as a claim that one platform is objectively more usable than another.
Apple Watch: put frequent checks on the face and others in Smart Stack
Apple Watch has two distinct places for glanceable information. A complication is information placed directly on a watch face; a Smart Stack widget appears in a scrollable stack. The supported complications depend on the face, and not every face offers every option. Apple’s watch-face reference lists options including Activity, Heart Rate, Sleep, and Workout.

Apple says Smart Stack can surface widgets based on contextual relevance, and you can pin a favorite. Tapping a widget, complication, or Live Activity can open its associated app or scene. See Apple’s WidgetKit documentation for those interaction details.
A sensible starting layout
- Place your most frequently checked daily activity measure on a face that supports it.
- Keep less frequently checked health summaries in Smart Stack, and pin a favorite if you want it readily available.
- Choose a face and available complication that match your watch model and watchOS; the options vary by face and software.
Apple describes the Activity app as a way to track movement and fitness goals. With watchOS 11, Apple also made Activity rings more customizable. Those features can help you tailor a view to your goals, but they do not establish one best configuration for every wearer. Details are in Apple’s Activity tracking guide and its watchOS 11 announcement.

Samsung: check the Health widget or Tile available on your model
Samsung’s developer documentation illustrates a Samsung Health widget for entering cups of water and viewing progress. That example shows a possible glanceable health use; it is not a definitive feature list for every Galaxy Watch generation. The documentation describes platform-specific implementation, so check what your watch and One UI Watch version actually offer before planning around a particular widget.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSome Samsung watch generations use the term Tile for an on-watch view. A TechRadar review of a specific Galaxy Watch model describes customizable Tiles for metrics and activity starts, but that observation should not be generalized to other models. Samsung’s widget documentation and the device’s own settings are better starting points for checking compatibility.

Garmin: choose widgets for your specific model
Garmin’s Forerunner 45/45 Plus manual describes adding widgets to a widget loop. For those models, listed information includes health statistics and activity history, with metrics such as timed activities, intensity minutes, steps, and calories. These details apply to the named Forerunner models, not to every Garmin watch. See the Forerunner 45/45 Plus widget manual and check your model’s documentation for its own available views.
How to choose a setup without cluttering your watch
- Name the check you want to make quickly. For example, decide whether you most often look for daily activity progress, heart-rate information, sleep summaries, or recent activity.
- Put the most frequent check in the fastest place your platform supports. That may be a complication on an Apple Watch face, a Samsung Health widget or Tile, or a Garmin widget in the loop, depending on model.
- Keep secondary information in a stack or another view. A glanceable display is useful only if it remains easy to scan.
- Confirm compatibility on the watch itself. Check the model, operating-system version, face or widget family, and any regional restrictions before relying on a metric.
- Test the tap or interaction. See whether selecting the view opens the relevant app or starts an activity, and whether that action fits how you use the watch.
Health metrics are tracking information, not a diagnosis
Do not assume that every watch supports every health metric, or that a displayed measure is a medical diagnosis. Availability can depend on the device, software, and region. Apple’s watchOS 11 announcement, for example, discusses sleep-related metrics and notes feature limits; check the relevant product documentation for the specific feature and your location before treating it as available.
