For a live show with remote guests, start with a browser-based streaming studio rather than a general-purpose video-call app. StreamYard is a straightforward option when you want to invite guests by link and decide when they appear on air; Restream is worth considering for its documented guest screen-sharing and presentation controls; Riverside is a fit to compare when separate participant recordings matter as much as the live broadcast. There is no independently established winner among them, and plan limits and features can change.
What to use instead of Skype for a live stream
Choose a tool built around a live production workflow: a guest joins the host’s studio, the host decides when to bring that guest on screen, and shared material can be selected for broadcast. That differs from a regular video call, where everyone in the call may be visible or audible without a separate on-air decision.

For most small shows, compare StreamYard and Restream first. Add Riverside to the shortlist if editing separate recordings of each participant is a priority. If you already produce a show in OBS and need highly customized scenes, OBS can remain part of the setup, but plan for a separate way to connect remote guests.
Compare the options by workflow
| Tool | Joining and host control | Live production and sharing | Recording | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamYard | The host shares a studio link. Guests use a supported browser, allow camera and microphone access, and enter a display name. They do not appear on the broadcast until the host adds them. Mobile joining is also described in its help material. | Its paid-plan documentation describes a guest greenroom and custom RTMP destinations. Exact plan availability should be checked before choosing a plan. | StreamYard says paid plans include separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants. Confirm current plan limits and recording terms. | A host who wants a link-based guest entrance and a clear decision point before a guest goes live. |
| Restream | Its guest documentation describes controls for guest camera and microphone. The article was dated April 7, 2026; check the current help page for supported browsers and devices. | Guests can share a screen, presentation, or extra camera input and use private chat. The host chooses whether shared material or a camera input is shown on the stream. | Not stated in the cited guest-feature material. | A show where guests need to present or share material and the host wants to choose what reaches the broadcast. |
| Riverside | Riverside says guests can join from iOS or Android using its live-streaming app. | Its product page describes multistreaming, audience engagement, screen sharing, and presentations. | Riverside advertises individual participant audio and video files, recording up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio. These are vendor-stated specifications, not independent measurements. | A host who wants live streaming plus separate participant files for later editing. |
| OBS plus a guest workflow | OBS alone does not provide the turnkey guest-link workflow described for browser studios. StreamYard’s vendor-authored comparison says OBS typically needs third-party tools for remote guests. | StreamYard’s comparison describes OBS as offering deep scene customization. Treat this as a workflow trade-off from a vendor comparison, not an independent benchmark. | Depends on the recording tools and workflow selected. | A producer who values detailed scene control and is comfortable assembling a separate guest connection. |
How to choose for your show
Prioritize easy guest entry
Look for an invitation that a guest can open in a browser, a clear camera-and-microphone permission step, and a host-controlled greenroom or equivalent. StreamYard documents this link-to-studio flow and keeps the guest off the broadcast until the host adds them. Before scheduling, check that guests can use the required browser or mobile route.

Count everyone who may appear
StreamYard lists up to 10 on-screen participants total on paid plans, with additional backstage participants depending on plan. Riverside advertises up to seven guests. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not universal limits across all plans or accounts; verify the current plan details and whether the host counts toward the on-screen total.
Check how guests present
If a guest will show slides, a browser window, or a second camera, confirm that the host can preview and choose when that input reaches the audience. Restream’s guest help documentation describes guest screen sharing, presentations, and an extra camera input, with the host selecting what is shown on stream.

Decide whether post-show editing matters
If you need to edit each speaker independently after the live event, compare recording formats, participant separation, and plan availability before subscribing. Riverside advertises individual participant files and up to 4K video and 48 kHz audio recording; those figures are product claims rather than measured results. StreamYard’s paid-plan documentation also lists separate local audio and video recordings for on-screen participants.

Prepare guests and avoid common problems
Before the broadcast
- Send the guest link and joining instructions early enough to test the device and browser they plan to use.
- Ask guests to use a strong internet connection and headphones or earbuds. StreamYard’s Help Center guest instructions say, “We recommend wearing earbuds or headphones to prevent audio echoes.”
- Have the guest approve camera and microphone access in the browser or app. If the guest is not visible or audible, check those permissions and the selected input devices before changing the live production.
- Agree on who will share slides or screens and when. The host should confirm the shared item is the one intended for viewers before putting it on air.
When something goes wrong
- Guest joins but is not on screen: In StreamYard’s documented workflow, that is expected until the host adds the guest to the broadcast. Check the studio’s participant or backstage area.
- No camera or microphone: Check browser or app permissions, selected devices, and whether another application is using the device. Ask the guest to rejoin only after checking those basics.
- Echo or feedback: Have participants use headphones or earbuds and ensure they are not monitoring the stream on speakers nearby.
- Guest cannot join on mobile: Device and browser support differ. Check the platform’s current guest instructions for the specific phone or tablet and browser before the show.
- Slides or screen share are missing from the broadcast: The host may need to select the shared screen, presentation, or camera input for the live layout; guest sharing does not necessarily make that material visible to the audience automatically.
- Participant or destination limit blocks the setup: Recheck the chosen plan’s current limits. StreamYard documents up to 10 on-screen participants total on paid plans; additional backstage participants and other limits depend on plan. Its Guest Destinations feature also has separate guest-account and destination limits.
Plan and distribution details to verify
Do not pick a service from a headline feature list alone. Before paying or inviting guests, verify current pricing, free-tier restrictions, country availability, participant caps, recording access, and the destinations you need. The available product documentation establishes the capabilities described above but does not establish current prices or a side-by-side reliability ranking.

StreamNeo is not a Skype replacement or a way to bring a live remote guest or camera into a show. It serves a different need: keeping an uploaded video or playlist looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream. If you also run that kind of channel, you upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video as-is up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Its first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans; India-based users can pay by UPI or card, while card checkout is available worldwide. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
