There is no single best preset for every low-end PC: each Steam game exposes different settings, and the right changes depend on whether your system is limited by graphics, the processor, memory, or heat. Start by recording the game’s current settings, compare performance in the same scene, and change one option at a time. The most useful first moves are usually lowering resolution or demanding visual effects and closing unnecessary background apps.
Start with a repeatable performance check
Choose a scene or gameplay situation you can revisit, such as the same save point or practice area. Note the current settings and observe frame rate and smoothness before making changes. Use the game’s FPS display if available, or Steam’s in-game performance monitor on supported systems. A single reading cannot diagnose every cause, but repeating the same situation makes it easier to tell whether a change helped.

- Open the game’s graphics or video settings and record the current values.
- Load a repeatable scene and note the displayed FPS and any noticeable stutter.
- Change one setting, replay the same scene, and compare the result before changing anything else.
Steam explains that higher resolution and settings beyond a system’s recommended levels can immediately reduce FPS in its Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software guidance.

Use the game’s own controls rather than assuming that every Steam title has the same options. If the game is rendering more pixels or visual detail than the PC can handle smoothly, reduce the image workload and check both frame rate and frame pacing after each adjustment.

| Setting to try | Potential performance effect | Visual or practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution or render scale | Reducing the rendered image workload can help when graphics processing is the constraint. | The image may look softer or less detailed. The appropriate level depends on the game, display, and system; Steam does not prescribe one resolution for all games. |
| Demanding visual options available in that game | Lowering options that exceed recommended levels can reduce graphics demand. | Visual detail may decrease. The specific options and their impact vary by game. |
| Shader detail on integrated graphics | Steam recommends trying low shader detail on systems with integrated graphics. | Shader effects may look simpler; availability and results depend on the title. |
| Windowed mode on integrated graphics | Steam recommends trying windowed mode for systems with integrated graphics. | The game runs in a window rather than filling the screen; behavior varies by title. |
Integrated graphics share system resources and may need more conservative options, but low shaders and windowed mode are suggestions to test, not a universal preset. If an option is absent, or the game’s own instructions recommend otherwise, use the controls that title supports.
Free up resources before launching the game
Close programs you do not need while playing, and review which applications start automatically with Windows or your operating system. Steam recommends closing unnecessary startup programs and background applications. Retest the same scene after closing apps so you can see whether the change affects smoothness.

Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance also advises investigating unnecessary background programs or services.
Use Steam’s performance monitor to look for bottlenecks
Steam’s in-game performance monitor is intended to help identify CPU, GPU, memory, and settings-related constraints. Metric availability differs by operating system. Treat its readings as clues for what to test, not proof that one component alone caused a performance problem.

- If memory is under pressure, close unnecessary applications and check whether the game still stutters.
- If temperatures are concerning, check ventilation and cooling rather than expecting a graphics preset to solve overheating.
When Steam launch options are—and are not—useful
Launch options are not universal performance switches. Steam documents graphics-related options for Source and GoldSrc games, and those options generally do not work for most third-party games. Check the game’s own documentation before entering an option; remove an unsupported option if it causes problems.
For a Valve game with misconfigured video settings, Steam documents -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step. This is for resetting configuration trouble, not a general FPS-boosting option. See Steam’s launch options documentation for the applicable game families and details.

Investigate stutter that remains after settings changes
Check memory pressure
Low memory can produce hitches even when average frame rate seems acceptable. Steam Support states: “If your system runs low on memory then your game or Steam might start being swapped to disk which can cause repeated frame rate hitches.” This explanation appears in Steam Support’s Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Hardware article. Close unused applications and use the performance monitor to check whether memory pressure coincides with the problem. Consider a RAM upgrade only if diagnosis points to insufficient memory, and verify the module type and the PC’s capacity before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck temperatures and airflow
Overheating may call for better ventilation, cooling maintenance, or hardware repair; lowering a graphics setting is not a substitute for fixing a cooling problem. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting article discusses overheating and possible hardware or ventilation remedies. If you cannot identify the cause, avoid buying a graphics card, SSD, or cooling accessory based only on a general low-FPS symptom.
Test an overlay only if you suspect a conflict
Steam’s overlay provides community features, and some games depend on it. Do not disable it by default for FPS. If you suspect it conflicts with a particular game, temporarily test with the overlay off, compare the same scene, and restore it if performance does not improve.
Optional: Intel Precompiled Shaders for supported systems
Intel’s Precompiled Shaders feature is a narrow option, not a general Steam optimization. Intel says it requires supported Intel hardware, a qualifying driver, Windows 10 or 11, an internet connection for the initial download, and a supported Steam-installed game. Support can vary as drivers and games change; Intel’s article was reviewed March 16, 2026. Check Intel’s Precompiled Shaders support information for eligibility. Intel-reported results for this feature apply only to its specified supported hardware, drivers, and games, not to low-end PCs as a whole.
