For smoother phone game streaming, start with a nearby 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, test latency to the gaming service itself, and choose a resolution and frame rate your phone and connection can sustain. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for 720p and 25 Mbps for 1080p; its Android setup guidance recommends latency below 40 ms and sets an 80 ms limit. These are service requirements and recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be smooth.
Which settings matter most?
Game streaming sends video from a remote gaming system to your phone while sending your inputs back. A good setup therefore depends on more than the advertised speed of your internet plan. The useful checks are the Wi-Fi signal where you play, latency on the route to the actual service, the bandwidth available to the stream, the phone’s display and capabilities, and the controls supported by the service.

Adjust in this order: stabilize Wi-Fi, measure the service connection, then tune stream quality. Starting with the highest resolution or frame rate can make problems harder to diagnose: a stream may look sharp when standing still but become choppy when the connection cannot sustain it. If input feels delayed, raising resolution will not fix it.
- Wi-Fi band and signal: Prefer 5 GHz when it reaches your play location reliably. A nearby, stable connection matters more than choosing a band that is weak through walls or over distance.
- Service latency: Use the streaming app’s own test if it provides one. A generic speed test does not measure the same route to the gaming service.
- Stream quality: Match resolution and frame rate to both the connection and the phone display. More demanding settings need more bandwidth and compatible hardware or service access.
- Controls: Check whether the service supports touch controls or requires a controller on your phone and platform.
Set up Wi-Fi for a steadier stream
Choose 5 GHz if the signal is strong where you play
NVIDIA recommends a router with a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and Steam Support recommends 5 GHz rather than a congested 2.4 GHz band for Steam Link. A 5 GHz network can be a good choice for game streaming, but its coverage is sensitive to distance and obstructions. If the signal is poor in the room where you play, switching bands alone may not help; try moving closer to the router or adjusting its placement.

Walls, floors, metal objects and electronics can weaken a wireless signal. Move the phone nearer to the router and, if your router allows it, try a less congested channel. A strong signal at the router is not enough if the phone is receiving an unstable connection at the play location.
Reduce competition on the home network
While diagnosing stutter or inconsistent quality, pause large downloads, video streams and uploads on other devices. Competing traffic can affect how consistently the stream receives data, even if a speed test taken at another time looks fast. Make one change at a time and retry the service’s network test or stream so you can see whether it helped.
Do not buy equipment before checking placement
If 5 GHz works near the router but not where you play, first assess router placement and your existing setup. Distance and obstructions can limit coverage; a faster internet plan by itself will not resolve a weak wireless signal or a poor route to the gaming service. Consider new equipment only if the existing router cannot provide a usable connection at the play location.

Latency is the time taken for data to travel between your device and a server and back. In a streamed game, a long or inconsistent trip can make controls feel delayed or cause the video to stutter. The relevant route is the one between your phone and the service’s gaming data center, not simply a nearby server chosen by a general-purpose speed test.

GeForce NOW’s latency guidance
NVIDIA’s Android setup guidance, accessed in 2026, says to use the in-app network test, requires latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center, and recommends below 40 ms. Treat the under-40 ms figure as the preferred target and under-80 ms as the stated service limit—not as a promise that every connection below the limit will feel equally responsive. The guidance is specific to GeForce NOW and should not be presented as a universal threshold for every streaming service.
- Open GeForce NOW and run its in-app network test.
- Check the reported latency to the service rather than relying on a generic internet speed-test ping.
- If the result is high or the stream behaves inconsistently, connect to a reliable 5 GHz network, move closer to the router and reduce competing network traffic.
- Run the service test again after a change. If the connection remains unsuitable, lower stream quality where the service offers that control or try again from a location with a better Wi-Fi signal.
NVIDIA notes that a VPN may increase latency or stuttering, or connect you to the wrong data center. If you use one, test the connection without it while troubleshooting. This isolates a possible cause; it does not establish that every VPN will cause a problem.
Choose resolution and frame rate your phone can sustain
Higher resolution makes the streamed image more detailed, while a higher frame rate can make motion appear smoother. Both depend on more than Wi-Fi speed: the phone must support the mode, the display must be capable of showing the target refresh rate, and the service or membership must make the mode available. The figures below are GeForce NOW service requirements or guidance, not independent measurements of performance in every home.

These bandwidth figures are NVIDIA’s listed targets for the corresponding GeForce NOW modes, not guarantees that a connection offering that nominal speed will remain stable during play. If a mode stutters, choose a lower resolution or bandwidth setting if the service exposes one, then see whether the stream becomes consistent. For Steam Link, Steam Support says advanced streaming settings can limit resolution and bandwidth; the available controls and labels may vary, so check the current app rather than assuming a particular menu name.

Start conservatively, then raise quality
If you are unsure what your connection can handle, begin with a lower resolution and a frame rate your phone supports. Once the stream is stable, increase one setting at a time and play long enough to notice interruptions rather than judging only the first few seconds. If raising a setting brings back stutter, return to the last stable mode. This is a practical way to find the limit of your current connection without treating a single speed reading as a guarantee.
A 120 FPS stream only makes sense if the service provides it, your device meets its requirements, and the display can refresh at 120 Hz. A high frame-rate option in a service does not upgrade a lower-refresh-rate phone screen. Likewise, a higher resolution is not automatically better if the connection cannot deliver it steadily.
Service-specific settings and device constraints
GeForce NOW on Android
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements page, accessed in 2026, lists Android 7.0 or later, 1 GB of available memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 support. Its bandwidth guidance is 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS and 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS. NVIDIA also says Android 1440p and 120 FPS require Ultimate membership, and its setup article says 120 FPS requires a phone or tablet with a 120 Hz display.

GeForce NOW on iPhone and iPad
NVIDIA lists iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later, 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS and 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS. Its guidance recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and states a latency requirement under 80 ms. Check NVIDIA’s current requirements before relying on these details, since support requirements can change.
NVIDIA says a gamepad is needed for gameplay on iPhone and iPad. Its listed controller types include Xbox controllers, Sony DualSense and DualShock 4, and MFi Bluetooth controllers. It does not recommend keyboard and mouse for gameplay through Safari. A phone clip can attach a compatible gamepad to the handset, but it is optional; verify compatibility with both your device and service before choosing a controller.
Steam Link
Steam Support recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of a congested 2.4 GHz band for Steam Link and notes that distance, walls, floors, metal and electronics can weaken wireless signal. Its guidance also identifies advanced streaming settings as the place to limit resolution and bandwidth. Since exact controls may vary, use the settings available in your version of Steam Link rather than assuming a particular label or value.
Fix lag, stutter or unstable image quality
Change one thing at a time. This helps distinguish a weak wireless connection from a demanding stream setting or a service-route problem.

- Run the service’s own network test. If the service offers one, check its reported connection to the gaming server. For GeForce NOW, use the in-app test; a generic speed-test ping is not an equivalent measurement.
- Improve the Wi-Fi link. Use 5 GHz if it is reliable where you play, move closer to the router and try a less congested channel if available.
- Quiet competing traffic. Pause large downloads, video streams and uploads elsewhere on the network while testing.
- Reduce stream demand. Lower resolution or bandwidth using the streaming service’s controls. Steam Link exposes limits in advanced streaming settings, according to Steam Support.
- Test without a VPN. NVIDIA says VPN use can contribute to higher latency, stuttering or connection to the wrong data center.
- Recheck from the play location. If coverage is poor there, evaluate router placement and existing equipment before considering a purchase.
If the test is good but the game still feels delayed
A result within a service’s stated latency limit does not rule out every source of delay, and a strong download-speed result does not demonstrate a stable game-streaming route. Check whether the problem changes when you move closer to the router, pause other traffic or reduce stream quality. If it does, the local connection or stream demand is relevant; if it does not, the available figures alone cannot identify the cause.
If video stutters or quality drops
Prioritize signal stability before increasing bandwidth settings. Try the lower stream mode and retest in the same location. A 5 GHz network with a weak signal can be less useful than a strong, stable connection; walls, floors and other obstructions may be the reason. Do not assume a faster internet plan will solve a problem caused by Wi-Fi interference or distance.
If a high frame-rate option is unavailable
Check the device, display and service conditions together. For GeForce NOW on Android, the cited guidance ties 120 FPS to a 120 Hz screen and Ultimate membership for the listed 1440p/120 FPS mode. A phone that does not meet those conditions cannot be made compatible simply by changing Wi-Fi settings.

Controls are part of the setup, not a substitute for stable Wi-Fi. NVIDIA recommends a clip to attach a gamepad to a phone. For GeForce NOW on iPhone or iPad, a gamepad is needed for gameplay; NVIDIA lists Xbox controllers, Sony DualSense or DualShock 4, and MFi Bluetooth controllers. Keyboard and mouse are not recommended for gameplay through Safari, and NVIDIA does not recommend virtual controls for long-term play.
Before relying on a controller, confirm that it works with the phone and the particular streaming service. Compatibility can depend on the service and platform, so a controller that pairs with a phone is not automatically supported for every game-streaming setup.
How to decide whether to raise stream quality
Use these checks together rather than treating any one number as a verdict:
- Wi-Fi: Is the connection reliable in the room where you actually play?
- Latency: What does the service’s own test report, and is the test for the service you use?
- Bandwidth: Does the connection meet the service’s listed target for the selected mode without competing traffic disrupting it?
- Display and device: Can the phone support the resolution and refresh rate?
- Service access: Does your service or membership provide that stream mode?
- Controls: Can you use a compatible controller or the supported input method on your platform?
Raise resolution or frame rate only when the lower mode is stable and the device and service support the upgrade. If the higher mode produces interruptions, return to the last stable setting. This is more useful than maximizing every option regardless of the connection.
