Best Settings for Playing P.T. on PC: Resolution, Graphics and Controller Support

For the unofficial native P.T. PC port, begin with the Original (PS4) preset and your display’s native resolution. See how to choose a display mode, adjust graphics and use a gamepad or keyboard.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the current unofficial native PC port of P.T., start with the Original (PS4) graphics preset and your display’s native resolution. Pick windowed, borderless or exclusive fullscreen according to how you like to play, and leave optional visual effects off until you know you want them. These are conservative starting choices—not a benchmarked best configuration for every PC.

P.T. was the 2014 playable teaser for the cancelled Silent Hills. The PC port is a separate, unofficial project, so its settings guide is about this port—not an official Konami release or a guarantee that every PC will perform the same way.

First, make sure you have the right PC version

The PC version covered here is an unofficial native port by developer Lorean Xavier. It is not an official Konami PC release, an emulator, or the separate Unreal Engine fan remake known as Unreal PT. The native port uses C++ game logic and a Vulkan renderer, and reads game data from the player’s own PS4 copy. Its repository and installer do not include those game assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters before you adjust graphics or connect a controller: this guide is about the native port and its documented settings, not the controls or features of another fan project. The project README describes setup downloads in the published 1.0.1 release. It also says that 1.0.2 source-tree changes and macOS packages are not published release downloads. Release details can change, so check the project’s current README and release information before setting up the game.

#1 Best Overall
8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

In practical terms, the port is software, not a package containing P.T. itself. You need to provide the game data from your own PS4 copy; the port’s repository and installer do not bundle those files. Do not treat a third-party game-data download as an official part of the project. Before downloading anything, confirm that you are looking at the native port’s project page and a published release rather than a source-tree change or an unrelated fan remake.

In an interview published by PC Gamer on 8 October 2026, Xavier described the aim this way: “I wanted to make the version of P.T. that my younger self always wished existed.” That explains the project’s motivation, but it does not make the port an official Konami product or mean its settings reproduce every PS4 condition on every PC.

Check your operating system and graphics support

The README lists Windows 10 or 11 on x64, Linux on x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer, and macOS 14 or newer as supported environments, subject to additional hardware and platform qualifications. The renderer requires a GPU and driver that support Vulkan 1.3; on macOS, the project uses MoltenVK. Meeting the operating-system requirement alone does not establish that a particular graphics card or driver will work.

Platform or feature Documented requirement or qualification
Windows Windows 10/11 x64; Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU and driver.
Linux x86-64 with glibc 2.38 or newer; Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU and driver.
macOS macOS 14 or newer; rendering uses MoltenVK. The README’s release note says macOS packages are not published release downloads.
Ray-traced effects Require additional hardware support; unsupported settings are grayed out.
DLSS Requires an RTX graphics card.

The README says FSR and XeSS work on recent GPUs on Windows. It does not establish that every listed upscaling or frame-generation feature works on every supported operating system or graphics card. Treat the available options in your own settings menu as the practical guide to what your configuration supports.

For setup, it helps to separate three checks that are easy to conflate: whether your operating system is on the supported list, whether your GPU and driver meet the Vulkan requirement, and whether a particular optional effect has its own hardware requirement. A PC can meet the first two and still lack support for a ray-traced option or DLSS. A grayed-out control is not necessarily a broken installation; the README says unsupported effects are disabled in the menu.

What are the best settings for playing P.T. on PC?

Use the Original (PS4) preset at your display’s native resolution as a baseline, then change one setting at a time if the picture, performance or controls do not suit your setup. The port documents several graphics presets, display modes and image-quality options, but the available information does not provide comparative test results or a universal frame-rate target.

  1. Choose Original (PS4). This is the documented visual baseline for starting with the port’s original-behavior presentation.
  2. Set the render resolution to your display’s native resolution. This is a sensible first choice for a clear image. It is a recommendation, not a claim that it will be fastest on every PC.
  3. Choose a display mode. Use borderless for convenient desktop switching, exclusive fullscreen if you prefer it on your system, or windowed for a smaller play area.
  4. Leave optional effects at their current or default settings initially. If performance is poor, try a lower render resolution or a lower preset before enabling costly enhancements.
  5. Adjust V-sync only if you have a reason to. If you notice tearing or unwanted latency, switch the setting and compare the result on your own display and PC.

This order gives you a known visual reference before you start trading image quality for performance. A lower preset or resolution may help on a particular system, but the project documentation does not quantify the performance gain for any setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the baseline as a comparison point rather than as a promise. If the image looks right and play feels comfortable, you do not need to turn on every option just because it is available. If something is not to your liking, change one control, revisit the same area of the game and decide whether that specific change helped. This is more useful than changing resolution, preset, V-sync and effects together, because you will know which adjustment made a difference on your machine.

How the graphics presets fit together

Preset When to consider it What is established
Low Try it if the initial configuration performs poorly. It is a selectable preset; no frame-rate result or exact visual change is stated.
Medium Another option to try when reducing settings. It is a selectable preset; no comparative benchmark is stated.
Original (PS4) Recommended starting point when you want the documented original-behavior baseline. The README identifies it as the original-behavior preset.
High Consider it if you want to explore a higher preset and your system runs comfortably. It is selectable; a performance cost is not quantified.
Ultra Consider it as an optional higher preset if available and suitable for your system. It is selectable; no universal hardware recommendation or benchmark is provided.
Custom Use it when you want to tune individual options instead of selecting a preset. The README lists it as a preset option and documents separate image-quality controls.

The table describes choices, not a ranking. The project documentation does not specify exact per-preset image differences, hardware targets or measured performance. If you want to compare two configurations, change one setting, play the same section and judge the trade-off on your own hardware rather than assuming a preset name guarantees a particular result.

Custom is the natural choice once you know which individual controls you want to adjust. For example, you can keep the Original (PS4) baseline and experiment with a single image-quality control, rather than switching to a higher preset that may alter multiple settings at once. The README lists controls such as shadow sizes and filtering, but it does not provide a per-control cost or an exact mapping from each preset to those options. Keep notes if you are comparing alternatives, and restore the previous value if the change does not look or feel better to you.

What resolution should I use?

Start at your monitor’s native resolution. The port documents a selectable render resolution, and that is the most straightforward way to establish a sharp baseline. If the game does not run smoothly enough for you, lower the render resolution and compare before changing several other settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Display mode and render resolution are related choices, but they are not identical. The README says borderless mode can render at a selected size separate from the desktop window. Exclusive fullscreen lists the display modes supported by the screen. In windowed mode, the game occupies a window rather than the full display.

  • Native resolution: a practical first setting when image clarity is the priority.
  • Lower render resolution: a reasonable adjustment to test if performance is unsatisfactory; no specific improvement can be promised.
  • Borderless: choose it for desktop-switching convenience. Its selected render size need not match the desktop window size.
  • Exclusive fullscreen: choose it if you prefer a fullscreen mode and the listed display modes suit your setup.
  • Windowed: choose it if you want a smaller play area.

These display-mode choices are about preference and compatibility, not a sourced performance ranking. If a resolution or mode is unavailable, use the supported options shown by the game rather than assuming that every monitor mode will be selectable.

When comparing render sizes, keep the display mode and graphics preset fixed so that the test stays meaningful. Start at native resolution, then try a lower selectable render size only if you have a reason, such as unsatisfactory smoothness. Borderless mode can use a render size that differs from the desktop window, so do not assume that the desktop’s resolution is the only size the game can render. Conversely, exclusive fullscreen offers the display modes listed for the screen; it does not promise that every arbitrary resolution can be selected.

Should you turn on V-sync, upscaling or extra effects?

V-sync is a documented on/off setting, but the README does not give a universal recommendation. Keep its current value at first. If you see tearing, try changing it; if the controls feel less responsive, compare the other setting. The effect can depend on your display and PC, so make the decision from your own experience rather than treating either position as universally best.

The port also documents optional upscaling, frame generation on specified GPU families, and image-quality controls. Availability can depend on hardware and platform; some unsupported options appear grayed out. These features are choices to experiment with, not requirements for playing the game.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
  • Upscaling: the README lists AMD FSR 3.1, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and Intel XeSS. It specifies that DLSS requires an RTX card and says FSR and XeSS work on recent GPUs on Windows.
  • Frame generation: listed for specified GPU families; the available documentation does not establish a universal result or a configuration for every platform.
  • Ray-traced effects: ray-traced shadows, ambient occlusion and floor reflections are optional, with additional hardware requirements. If the controls are unavailable, the README says unsupported settings are grayed out.
  • Other image controls: the project lists shadow sizes, filtering, film grain, motion blur, depth of field, lens effects and enhanced textures. Their presence does not mean each should be enabled for every player.

If your goal is to preserve the Original (PS4) baseline, leave enhancements off initially and add only the options you actually prefer. If your goal is to find a smoother configuration, change one setting at a time and keep track of the previous value so you can reverse a change that makes the experience worse.

Do not read the names of newer upscalers as a promise that they are necessary or automatically beneficial here. The documented list tells you which options the project exposes and the stated hardware qualifications; it does not supply results comparing image quality or responsiveness. If an option is unavailable, leave it alone rather than trying to force it through unsupported hardware. For a simple first pass, the preset and resolution matter more than experimenting with every enhancement toggle.

Does P.T. on PC support a controller?

Yes. The current native port’s README says any gamepad works as a PS4 pad. Button prompts follow the most recently used input family: keyboard, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. You can also play with mouse and keyboard, so a controller is optional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The README describes original vibration as the default and lists enhanced feedback options. It also cautions that physical controller output still needs hardware validation. In other words, gamepad input and prompt families are documented, but the documentation does not establish that every controller model or every feedback feature has been independently tested.

Using a gamepad or switching back to keyboard

Connect your chosen input device and use it in the game. Because prompts follow the last input used, the displayed button family can change if you switch between a controller and keyboard or mouse. That change in prompts does not by itself mean the game has changed its controller configuration.

If input or vibration does not behave as expected, first check whether the game is displaying prompts for the input device you are currently using. The project’s documentation does not name validated controller models or provide model-specific troubleshooting, so it would be misleading to promise that a particular pad or feedback feature will work identically on every system.

There is no controller model that can be singled out as a proven best buy from the project information. A general PC gamepad is an optional convenience for players who prefer controller input, but the port’s broad gamepad statement should not be mistaken for a hardware validation list. If you already have a compatible controller, try it before buying another one. Mouse and keyboard are also documented as an input option, so you do not need a pad merely to play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need a microphone?

No. A microphone is used for one part of the game, but the README documents a configurable keyboard key as a substitute. A microphone is therefore optional rather than a general requirement for playing the PC port.

GameSir Nova Lite 2 Wireless PC Controller Hall Effect Sticks
  • Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
  • 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

If you prefer voice input, a USB microphone is a possible accessory, but the project documentation does not establish that you need to purchase one or recommend a particular model. If you do not have a microphone, use the configurable keyboard key instead. The same principle applies to the controller: both are preference-based options rather than prerequisites for every player.

How to choose between configurations

There is no sourced benchmark that ranks settings across PCs. Instead, compare configurations against the result you care about most:

  • For the PS4 visual baseline: use Original (PS4) at native display resolution, then avoid optional enhancements unless you prefer their appearance.
  • For a performance adjustment: lower resolution or select a lower preset, then assess the same section again. The documentation supplies no expected frame rate or measured gain.
  • For desktop convenience: use borderless; for a smaller play area, use windowed; for fullscreen, consider exclusive fullscreen and the display modes it lists.
  • For input preference: choose mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. Prompts reflect the most recently used input family.
  • For visual experimentation: try optional effects individually, keeping in mind their hardware qualifications and that their benefit is subjective.

This approach keeps the choices separable: image fidelity, smoothness on your own machine, display convenience and input preference are different goals. You do not need to change all four at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful comparison session is short and controlled: note the current preset, resolution, display mode and V-sync state; change one item; then revisit the same portion of the game. Decide whether the result improved the quality you were trying to change. If not, return to the prior value and test something else. This avoids attributing a difference to an effect when several unrelated settings changed at the same time.

There is no cost estimate or named hardware tier in the project documentation, and no frame-rate statistic that would make one configuration a universal winner. Treat “best” as the combination that looks right, runs acceptably on your PC and suits your preferred controls. The available options may also vary with hardware and release version, so what appears in your menu is more useful than assuming every listed feature will be available to every player.

Common setup issues and what to check

The game will not launch or a graphics option is unavailable

Check the listed operating-system version and whether the GPU and driver support Vulkan 1.3. On macOS, the project uses MoltenVK, and the release-download status described by the README may differ from the status of other platforms. For optional effects, a grayed-out control indicates that the project considers the setting unsupported on the current setup.

The game runs poorly at the starting settings

Try a lower render resolution or a lower graphics preset before turning on optional effects. Compare one change at a time. The available documentation does not provide a minimum frame rate, target hardware list or a guaranteed performance improvement for any individual change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The button prompts do not match the controller

Prompts follow whichever input was used last. Use the controller again and check whether the displayed prompt family changes. This documented behavior is separate from the question of whether a particular controller’s physical output or vibration has been validated.

You do not have a microphone

Use the configurable keyboard key documented as a substitute for the voice-input section. The README does not make a microphone mandatory.

You cannot find a macOS package or a newer version

Check the release page and README rather than assuming that source-tree changes are already packaged for download. The README identifies setup downloads in the published 1.0.1 release and says 1.0.2 source-tree changes and macOS packages are not published release downloads. These details are version-sensitive, so verify them again at the time you install.

Keep the two fan projects separate

Unreal PT is a historical, separate Unreal Engine fan remake, not the native port described in this guide. A 2019 GameSpot report described mouse-and-keyboard input, PS4 and Xbox One controllers, VR motion controllers and a changed ending for that remake. Those details should not be treated as evidence about the native port’s VR support, controller validation or current availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is especially important if you are comparing controller claims or looking for VR support. The historical report is about Unreal PT, not the Vulkan-based native port. It does not establish that the remake can still be downloaded, nor does it establish that the native port supports VR. For this guide, rely on the native port’s own documented input options: gamepad, mouse and keyboard, and the listed prompt families.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best settings for playing P.T. on PC?

Start with the Original (PS4) preset and your display’s native resolution. Choose windowed, borderless or exclusive fullscreen based on preference, leave optional effects off initially and adjust one setting at a time if needed. These are conservative starting choices, not benchmark results.

What resolution should I use?

Use your display’s native resolution as a clear baseline. If performance is unsatisfactory, test a lower render resolution. Borderless mode can render at a selected size separate from the desktop window, while exclusive fullscreen lists supported display modes.

Does P.T. on PC support a controller?

Yes. The current native port’s README says any gamepad works as a PS4 pad, and prompts follow the last-used input family: keyboard, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. Physical controller output still needs hardware validation, so no specific model is confirmed here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a microphone to play?

No. A microphone is used for one part of the game, but a configurable keyboard key can substitute.

Is the PC port an official Konami release, and does it include P.T. files?

No. It is an unofficial native port, not an official Konami PC release, and its repository and installer do not include the game assets. It reads game data from the player’s own PS4 copy.

Will DLSS, FSR, XeSS or ray tracing work on my PC?

Availability depends on hardware and platform. The README says DLSS requires an RTX card, FSR and XeSS work on recent GPUs on Windows, and ray-traced effects have additional hardware requirements. Unsupported controls may appear grayed out.

The Bottom Line

For a practical first setup, choose Original (PS4), use your display’s native resolution and select the display mode and input method you prefer. Keep optional enhancements off until you have a reason to try them, and compare changes one at a time. The port is unofficial and requires your own PS4 game data; check its current README and release page for version-sensitive setup details.
