There is no single best graphics preset or brightness level for every horror game. The right approach is to start near the game’s recommended settings, test the same demanding scene, and make small changes—prioritizing resolution and costly optional effects while keeping the lighting and image details that matter to you.
Why there is no universal horror-game preset
Games differ in their recommended hardware, visual design, supported features, and performance targets. A setting that has a large cost in one title may be unavailable or less demanding in another. Use the game’s own requirements and calibration screens as your starting point, not a preset copied from a different game.

For example, PlayStation’s Until Dawn PC page lists a minimum tier averaging 720p at 30 fps and a recommended tier averaging 1080p at 60 fps. Its higher tier lists 1440p at 60 fps or 4K at 30 fps. These are published targets for Until Dawn, not a standard for horror games generally.

- Check the game’s own targets. Read its hardware recommendations, supported graphics features, and stated resolution or frame-rate targets. Note which options your hardware and the game actually support.
- Choose a sensible starting preset. Begin near the tier that best matches your PC, then load a demanding, repeatable gameplay scene. A busy area with complex lighting or many effects is more useful than a static menu.
- Change one setting at a time. Play the same scene after each adjustment and compare smoothness, clarity, and the visual effect you changed. This helps identify which trade-offs matter in that particular game.
- Judge frame delivery, not just the average. Average FPS can hide stutter or uneven pacing. Where available, look at frame-time information as well. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor documents average FPS, 95th-percentile frame time, and frame-time graphs, and can recommend changes to available in-game settings. Recommendations are applied manually, and the feature is limited to compatible Radeon configurations and games.
- Repeat the test after each change. Keep an adjustment only if it improves the actual scene on your PC without sacrificing more image quality or atmosphere than you want to give up.
What to lower first when performance is poor
There is no guaranteed order that works for every engine, but these are practical options to test. The actual impact depends on the title, hardware, and implementation.

Try upscaling or a lower render scale
If the game supports an upscaler, test it before making several unrelated changes. DLSS and FSR render the image at a lower internal resolution and upscale it to the display; their modes trade image quality against performance differently. Results and compatibility vary by game and hardware. Compare fine detail and motion in the same scene rather than assuming one mode will look best everywhere.
Support is title-specific: PlayStation lists DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.1 for Until Dawn, while NVIDIA describes DLSS presets for The Medium. These examples do not mean every horror game offers either feature.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
If the game has no suitable upscaler, reducing resolution or render scale can improve performance, but it may soften the image. Check whether small clues, text, and distant objects remain clear enough at your display’s output resolution.
Reduce ray tracing if its cost outweighs its contribution
Ray-traced reflections, global illumination, ambient occlusion, and shadows can add visual detail, but their cost and visible benefit depend on the game. Reflections and global illumination are reasonable candidates to test when performance is short of your goal. If a title offers a non-ray-traced alternative, compare it in the same scene rather than assuming the effect is essential—or that disabling it will always produce the largest gain.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Epic’s ray-tracing optimization guide describes ray-traced reflections as especially demanding and identifies SSAO as a lower-cost fallback in a ray-tracing scenario. The options and their implementation vary by game.
Lower the overall preset if individual tweaks are not enough
If performance remains below your goal, reduce the game’s overall quality preset, then restore individual options that look important while checking the same scene. Resolution and ray tracing can have substantial performance impact in general, while texture quality is often more demanding on video memory than on compute according to MSI’s graphics-settings guide. These are broad tendencies, not fixed rules for every engine; a texture reduction may help if video memory is constrained, but may do little when the limitation lies elsewhere.

Keep the atmosphere without guessing at brightness
Darkness, fog, shadows, reflections, lighting, and post-processing can shape a horror game’s mood, but no one effect is universally essential. Treat them as artistic choices: change a setting only after checking how its removal affects the scenes you care about and whether the performance gain is worthwhile.
Set brightness or gamma using the game’s calibration instructions and the example scene it provides. There is no evidence-supported brightness or gamma number that applies across games, displays, and rooms. Raising brightness simply to reveal every dark corner may make the image easier to read but can also change the intended contrast; use your own comfort and the game’s calibration guidance to find the balance.

How to decide whether a setting is worth keeping
Compare each option in the same gameplay scene using the measures that matter to you:
- Frame delivery: Did performance improve, and did uneven pacing or stutter change?
- Clarity: Are the image and important details still clear at your display’s output resolution?
- Visual contribution: Does the effect make a noticeable difference to lighting, reflections, shadows, or the atmosphere in this title?
- Compatibility: Does the game support the feature, and does it work with your hardware?
- Readability and comfort: Can you follow the action and see essential details without making the scene less enjoyable?
Vendor guidance can help identify settings and measurement tools, but it is not a substitute for testing your own game, hardware, and display. The Medium’s split-reality sequences, for instance, add a rendering workload described in NVIDIA’s game-specific article; that example should not be treated as a performance estimate for other horror titles.
