You can switch modes from the system menu in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition. These are Square Enix’s published targets, not independent performance measurements.
Which mode should you use?
There are two options, and neither is universally best. The choice is a tradeoff between the publisher’s listed frame-rate and resolution targets.

Do the targets differ in handheld, tabletop, or TV mode?
Nintendo’s product listing includes TV, tabletop, and handheld play, but the consulted official sources do not give separate resolution or frame-rate targets for those play contexts. The 1080p/60fps and 1440p/30fps figures should therefore be treated as the published mode specifications, not as confirmed per-display results.

This advice applies to DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, released September 24, 2026, according to Nintendo and Square Enix. Nintendo’s listing says that edition cannot be played on the original Switch. Square Enix also says save data cannot be transferred between the Switch and Switch 2 editions. Nintendo’s general statement that many original Switch games run on Switch 2 does not override this title-specific compatibility notice.
