There is no single best Baldur’s Gate 3 preset for every platform. On PC, tune settings to your hardware and test the renderer if performance is poor. On Steam Deck, start with the Native build and its current defaults. On PS5 Pro, choose between image detail and frame rate; the official figures available are specific to Pro, not base PS5. Larian has not published current Xbox Series X|S resolution and frame-rate targets in the sources cited here.
Best PC settings: adjust for your hardware
PC performance depends on your graphics card, processor, display resolution, and frame-rate target, so a fixed preset is not established as best for all systems. If the game stutters, runs poorly, or becomes unstable, change one variable at a time and compare results.

- Compare the renderers. In the game’s graphics settings, test DirectX 11 and Vulkan on your own system. Larian recommends this as a troubleshooting step; neither renderer is established as universally faster or more stable. Larian’s PC performance guidance.
- Reduce the workload. Lower the display resolution or graphics settings, then check whether performance improves before changing more options.
- Check which GPU the game is using. On a system with integrated and discrete graphics, make sure Baldur’s Gate 3 is assigned to the discrete graphics card.
- Try a 60 fps cap if a high-refresh display is causing graphical issues. Larian suggests this when the monitor refresh rate is above 60 Hz and the setup is producing problems.
Larian’s 2023 launch-era examples said a good CPU paired with a GeForce RTX 3060 could play at 1440p and 60 fps, while native 4K called for a top-end GeForce RTX 4080/4090 or AMD equivalent; it also noted that DLSS could reduce requirements. These are dated examples, not current buying thresholds or a guarantee for a particular PC. Larian’s PC launch announcement.

Start with the Steam Deck Native build rather than assuming Proton is required. Larian says the Native version uses less CPU processing and memory than running the game through Proton, with more stable frame rates, shorter loading, and smoother gameplay as intended benefits. That description is not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every area. Larian also says model-streaming improvements were intended to reduce frame-rate spikes in busy places such as the Lower City in Act 3. Native version details and Larian’s Hotfix #34 post.

Start with the official layout and display defaults
- Use the Official Layout for the gamepad controls.
- Set the aspect ratio to 16:9 and use fullscreen.
- Begin with the medium video defaults.
- If performance is troublesome, Larian’s general Steam Deck FAQ recommends FSR 1.0 Balanced as a performance option. Steam Deck support FAQ.
Choose an upscaler with the Native-build chronology in mind
Larian’s general Steam Deck FAQ recommends FSR 1.0 Balanced when troubleshooting performance. Its later Native-build guidance explains that FSR 2.2 can produce a sharper image than FSR 1 but may cost some performance. Then, in Hotfix #35 on November 20, 2025, Larian changed the Native build’s default upscaling type from FSR 1 to FSR 2.2, saying it should result in sharper visuals. These recommendations describe different points in the Native build’s update history, not two simultaneous defaults. Native version FAQ and Hotfix #35 notes.
If the Native build causes a problem
Larian documents a way to revert to Proton version 8 or higher if needed. Save locations differ between Native and Proton; with Steam Cloud enabled, the most recent saves sync automatically when switching to Native. Follow the build-switching steps in Larian’s Native version FAQ rather than treating a switch as an ordinary graphics setting.

If you install the game to removable storage, Larian recommends a 256GB card with high read/write speeds, in the UHS-I to UHS-III range. This is storage guidance, not a claim that a microSD card improves frame rate. Larian’s Steam Deck support FAQ.

Only disable Performance Mode or VRR for the reported controller issue
If the controller radial wheel lags or freezes, Larian’s September 2025 workaround recommends turning off Performance Mode and variable refresh rate (VRR). This is a symptom-specific workaround, not a general recommendation to disable those options. A later update to Hotfix #34 also said turning off Performance Mode could temporarily address occasional freezing; Hotfix #35 then listed a fix for a PS5 freeze triggered by L2. Xbox Series X and Series S: what is and is not established
Larian’s cited official updates confirm Xbox fixes, but do not specify current Series X versus Series S resolution targets, frame-rate targets, or model-specific graphics presets. PS5 Pro figures are not a substitute for Xbox specifications. Use the game’s available display options and your console’s display settings, but these sources do not establish which Xbox mode is best or what performance target either model achieves.
