By worldwide hardware units sold, the leader in each home-console generation is the Magnavox Odyssey², Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. This ranks reported sales—not review scores, value or overall quality—and follows one common numbered-generation convention that excludes handhelds.
Best-selling console by generation
The table uses the generation assignments and rounded totals in Meta Awards’ 2026 comparison. “Generation total” is the combined hardware-unit figure for systems grouped in that source’s generation, not a consistent measure across every possible generation classification.

Figures and generation assignments are from Meta Awards’ generation comparison. Generation nine is still in progress, so its total is not final. Generation eight is the largest grouping in this table, at 369.0 million units.

What the generation numbers mean
There is no universally applied boundary for every console generation. The table follows Meta Awards’ common home-console numbering and leaves handheld systems out. In that scheme, Nintendo Switch belongs to generation eight; some other sources place it in generation nine. Because the grouping changes, generation-wide totals can change too. The winners above are comparable within this table’s convention, not a definitive ruling on generation labels.

How to read the sales figures
Hardware totals across different eras are not perfectly like-for-like. The Top100Sales console ranking, updated October 2, 2026, notes that figures may be manufacturer-reported shipments or sell-through, so cross-era comparisons are approximate. Microsoft stopped publishing Xbox unit sales in 2015; Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S totals used in rankings are estimates, not current manufacturer-reported totals. Generation totals that include those systems therefore also rely in part on estimates.
For a more precise current Nintendo reference, Nintendo reports 156.59 million Switch hardware units worldwide as of June 30, 2026, compared with 156.6 million rounded in the generation table. Nintendo defines the figures as consolidated worldwide life-to-date unit sales. It reported 23.68 million Nintendo Switch 2 units on the same date; that figure is a current product total, not a separate completed-generation ranking. See Nintendo’s dedicated video game sales units.

What sales rankings can—and cannot—tell you
A sales lead answers which console moved the most reported units under a particular counting method. It does not establish which console had the best games, performance, value or player experience. Meta Awards presents game-of-the-year award counts separately and cautions that awards and sales are different measures, so neither should be read as proof of the other.
