Best Self-Hosted Podcast Managers for Linux: 4 Open-Source Picks

Audiobookshelf best suits a combined audiobook and podcast library, while PinePods is the clearest multi-user podcast server. PodFetch is downloader-oriented; CastCharm has limited verifiable detail.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a self-hosted podcast library on Linux, PinePods is the clearest choice for a central, multi-user setup; Audiobookshelf stands out if you also want to manage audiobooks. PodFetch is the more downloader-focused option, while the available information on CastCharm is too limited for a detailed recommendation. All four are software projects, not hosted podcast services: you supply and maintain the server, storage, and updates.

A podcast manager helps you find or subscribe to shows, access episodes, and keep a library organized. The right fit depends on whether you mainly want a personal downloader, shared listening across users and devices, or one server for podcasts and audiobooks.

How to choose a self-hosted Linux podcast manager

Start with the listening setup you want rather than a long feature checklist. These projects differ most in their focus, account and syncing model, and how much server configuration they document.

  • Choose Audiobookshelf if podcasts should live alongside audiobooks or if household accounts, permissions, and synced listening progress matter.
  • Choose PinePods if you want a podcast-first service with a central database, multiple users, and documented Linux desktop clients.
  • Consider PodFetch if the main task is downloading podcast episodes on a self-hosted system.
  • Investigate CastCharm cautiously if its general podcast-management description appeals to you; the detail available here is not enough to assess its setup or current capabilities.

Self-hosting gives you control over where the service and its data run, but it also makes you responsible for deploying and maintaining that environment. A server can be an existing Linux machine or, if compatible with the project and workload, a small ARM64 device.

What self-hosting requires

Self-hosting is not the same as installing a desktop player: you need a machine to run the server, storage for the data and any downloaded episodes, and time to keep the deployment working. For PinePods, that includes deploying a server and database. Its documentation provides Docker Compose and Helm approaches and examples for MySQL/MariaDB and PostgreSQL; choose the route that matches the server skills and environment you already have.

If you do not already have a suitable Linux server, a Raspberry Pi-class ARM64 device is one possible host for PinePods, not a requirement. PinePods’ documentation says ARM deployments require a 64-bit operating system. Confirm compatibility and resource needs for your intended setup before buying hardware.

Also account for the limits of external search services: PinePods documents multiple search pathways, but some may depend on API keys or quotas. Search availability can therefore depend on the provider, not just your server.

Which one should you install?

  • For podcasts plus audiobooks: start with Audiobookshelf, especially if household permissions and synced progress are priorities.
  • For a multi-user podcast server: start with PinePods if its database and deployment model suit your setup.
  • For self-hosted downloads: evaluate PodFetch, while checking its current release and feature documentation before committing to it.
  • For CastCharm: treat the broad description as a starting point, not evidence of a particular client, deployment method, or feature set.

The roundup listing these four projects was dated September 22, 2026. Feature and app status can change, so consult each project’s current documentation before deploying.
