One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most communities, Flarum or NodeBB is the safer fit on a 1–2 GB VPS; Discourse is the strongest mature, feature-rich choice when you can provide at least 4 GB of comfortable headroom. Discourse is officially installable only through Docker and has the clearest published baseline (1 GB RAM with swap, dual-core CPU and 10 GB disk minimum), but its asset-building jobs and background services make it substantially heavier. Flarum uses a conventional PHP stack and can suit a small VPS, while NodeBB uses Node.js with MongoDB or Redis and offers a similarly leaner path. MyBB and phpBB remain straightforward, established alternatives when you want traditional PHP forum software.
The right decision depends on peak memory, database preference, email delivery, moderation features and how much system administration you want to handle. The figures below separate official requirements from third-party estimates because no project in this shortlist publishes a complete, directly comparable RAM benchmark.

Which VPS forum software should you choose?
Choose Discourse for the deepest built-in feature set
Discourse is the most mature and feature-dense option in this shortlist. It has the longest operational history and is the most proven choice when a community needs sophisticated discussions, moderation workflows, notifications and a broad extension ecosystem. The trade-off is resource use and a more opinionated deployment model.
Choose Flarum when a small VPS and PHP stack matter most
Flarum is the first option to investigate for a small forum on a conventional Linux, Nginx or Apache server. Its official documentation supports several database engines, including SQLite for simple installations, and its PHP architecture is familiar to administrators already running Composer-based applications. Because Flarum has no official RAM figure, leave enough margin for PHP workers, the database, web server and extensions rather than selecting the smallest advertised plan.
Choose NodeBB for a Node.js-based, real-time community
NodeBB suits administrators who are comfortable with Node.js and either MongoDB or Redis. Its setup is direct, and Redis can support clustering, but the database and JavaScript runtime add a different operational profile from PHP software. Verify the current release requirements before installation: cached copies of the project README have listed different Node.js versions.

Choose MyBB or phpBB for a traditional, economical forum
MyBB is open-source, self-hosted and positioned as a cost-effective business forum. phpBB is a mature, free platform. Neither had a dependable hardware specification established here, so their suitability should be judged through the current installation documentation and a load test on your own VPS. They are sensible candidates when you prefer a conventional PHP deployment and do not need the integrated workflow of Discourse.
Discourse: requirements, strengths and trade-offs
What the official installation baseline means
Discourse’s official INSTALL.md supports Docker-based installation only. You need SSH access to a 64-bit Linux server capable of running Docker. The documented minimum is 1 GB of RAM with swap, a dual-core processor is recommended, and 10 GB of disk is the minimum listed. The container stack includes PostgreSQL, Redis 7 and Ruby 3.2 or newer, so those services are part of the installation rather than separate packages you tune independently.

The official cloud installation guide recommends a more practical starting tier: at least 2 GB RAM, two or more CPU cores and 20 GB or more of disk. That recommendation is different from the bare minimum and is the better baseline for a new production forum with room for upgrades, uploads and background jobs.
Why production sizing is usually higher
Third-party production guidance places a comfortable forum around 4 GB RAM, 2–4 vCPU and a 40 GB SSD. The same guidance observes roughly 1.4–1.8 GB RAM for an idle stack. These are not official guarantees, and traffic, uploads, plugins, search indexing and email queues can change the result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Asset compilation is the notable memory peak. Community guidance commonly treats 2 GB as comfortable for a basic build and 4 GB as safer for a busy forum with plugins. A server that runs acceptably after installation can still fail or be killed by the operating system during an update if swap and temporary build headroom are absent.
Discourse deployment checklist
- Provision a 64-bit Linux VPS with SSH access, Docker support and a static hostname for the forum.
- Allocate at least the official minimum only for testing. For production, target the official 2 GB cloud recommendation or the 4 GB third-party comfort range according to expected activity.
- Configure swap before the first rebuild, especially on a 1–2 GB machine.
- Install the official Docker-based launcher and create the site configuration with your hostname, administrator address and SMTP settings.
- Complete the container build, then verify that PostgreSQL, Redis and the application start together after a reboot.
- Send a test activation email, password-reset message and notification before inviting users.
- Schedule database and upload backups outside the VPS and rehearse restoring them.
Flarum: PHP requirements and realistic VPS sizing
Official software prerequisites
Flarum’s installation documentation requires PHP 8.3 or newer and these PHP extensions: curl, dom, fileinfo, gd, json, mbstring, openssl, pdo_mysql, tokenizer, zip and session. The web server must be Apache with mod_rewrite or Nginx. You need SSH access and Composer for command-line extension management.
Supported database minimums are MySQL 5.7 or 8.0.30 and newer, MariaDB 10.3 or newer, SQLite 3.35.0 or newer, and PostgreSQL 10.0 or newer. For new installations, the documentation recommends MySQL 8.4 LTS, MariaDB 11.8 LTS or PostgreSQL 15–17.

Interpreting the conflicting RAM claims
Flarum publishes no official RAM requirement. A community forum report describes smooth operation on 1 GB for a small team, while another guide says 1 GB or more. Comparison pages conflict sharply: one lists 512 MB as a light footprint, while another suggests 2–4 vCPU and 4–8 GB RAM. Those numbers may describe different traffic levels, extensions and database arrangements.
For a low-traffic forum, begin with a 1–2 GB VPS only after confirming that the database and PHP worker limits fit alongside the operating system. Monitor peak resident memory during Composer updates, extension changes and traffic bursts. Move to a larger plan if the kernel starts reclaiming aggressively, PHP workers queue or database latency rises.
Flarum installation outline
- Install PHP 8.3 or later and every extension listed in the official prerequisites.
- Set up Nginx or Apache; with Apache, enable mod_rewrite and point the document root at Flarum’s public directory.
- Install Composer and create the application in a directory owned by the web-service user.
- Create an empty database and least-privilege database account in MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite or PostgreSQL.
- Run the web installer, enter the database credentials and create the administrator account.
- Use Composer and Flarum’s administration interface to add extensions; take a backup before each extension change.
- Configure SMTP and test activation, reset and notification messages.
NodeBB: runtime, database and setup details
Current prerequisites
NodeBB’s README requires Node.js 22 or newer and either MongoDB 5 or newer or Redis 7.2 or newer. Redis is required when you use clustering. Docker is optional rather than mandatory. Cached copies of the README have listed Node.js 20 or newer, so check the current release’s documentation at installation time instead of relying on an archived snippet.
What the published memory numbers do and do not prove
No official NodeBB RAM figure was found. A VPS vendor listing states 1,024 MB, while an older tutorial warns that installing dependencies can need more than 512 MB and recommends enabling swap. These are environment-specific observations, not a supported minimum. Reserve additional memory for MongoDB or Redis, Node.js processes, reverse-proxy buffering and build operations.
NodeBB setup flow
- Install the Node.js version required by the current NodeBB release and install MongoDB 5+ or Redis 7.2+.
- Clone the NodeBB repository into the directory that will run the application.
- From that directory, run
./nodebb setup. - When prompted, provide the database connection, administrator account and listening port. The default port is 4567.
- Start NodeBB, place it behind a TLS-terminating reverse proxy and confirm that the service restarts automatically.
- Configure SMTP and verify registration, password reset and notification delivery.
- Back up the database and uploads, then test a restore before opening registration publicly.
VPS sizing by budget and community size
1–2 GB VPS
On paper, Flarum, NodeBB and MyBB are safer choices than Discourse in this tier. Flarum’s conflicting estimates make measurement essential; NodeBB may need swap during dependency installation; MyBB has no established figure in the available documentation. Keep services on the same VPS only when traffic is small, limit background jobs and watch memory continuously. A 1 GB Discourse machine should be treated as a test deployment because the official minimum already assumes swap.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
2–4 GB VPS
This range aligns with Discourse’s official cloud recommendation at the lower end and with more comfortable operation at the upper end. It also gives Flarum or NodeBB room for extensions, indexing and moderate concurrency. Leave disk space for database growth, logs, uploaded files and update rollbacks rather than allocating the entire volume to the initial application.
4 GB and larger VPS
A 4 GB VPS is the most defensible starting point for a feature-heavy Discourse community, particularly when plugins or frequent asset builds are expected. It also provides a generous margin for Flarum or NodeBB, but a larger server cannot compensate for a poorly configured database, missing indexes or unbounded uploads.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Email is a production dependency, not an optional extra
Plan for a working SMTP service with every platform in this shortlist. Users need activation messages and password resets, and communities typically depend on notifications as well. The claim that Discourse requires SMTP comes from third-party guidance rather than a formal requirement in its official installation documentation; operationally, however, a forum that cannot deliver account and recovery email is not ready for public use.
Use a dedicated sending identity, configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the sending domain, and set a valid reverse DNS name where your mail provider requires it. Send test messages to more than one mailbox provider, inspect bounce handling and keep credentials out of public repositories. When mail fails, check DNS, TLS mode, port blocking, authentication errors and the application’s mail queue before changing VPS size.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMaintenance responsibilities you keep when self-hosting
- Updates: apply operating-system, runtime, database and forum security updates; read release notes for required PHP, Node.js, Ruby or database changes.
- Backups: copy databases and uploaded files to storage outside the VPS, retain multiple generations and perform restoration drills.
- Monitoring: track RAM, swap, CPU, disk usage, database latency, queue length, HTTP errors and certificate expiry.
- Security: restrict SSH, use key authentication, patch promptly, enforce HTTPS and separate administrative accounts.
- Email: monitor delivery, bounces and reputation; a functioning web server does not imply functioning SMTP.
- Capacity: review growth monthly. Uploaded media and database indexes often consume disk before page views consume CPU.
Common failure modes and fixes
The installer is killed during a build or update
This usually indicates insufficient peak memory rather than a permanently broken application. Add swap, stop unrelated services, retry during a quiet period and move to a larger VPS if the process still hits the memory limit. Discourse asset compilation is a known high-water mark; NodeBB dependency installation can also exceed 512 MB.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Registration works but no activation email arrives
Verify SMTP host, port, encryption and credentials, then inspect the application’s mail logs and the provider’s delivery events. Confirm DNS authentication records and test a password reset separately. Do not assume that restarting the forum fixes a rejected or misrouted message.
Pages are slow after enabling extensions
Disable the newest extension, compare memory and response time, and check database and PHP/Node.js logs. On a small VPS, extension overhead can consume the margin that made the base installation appear light. Upgrade only after identifying whether the bottleneck is memory, CPU, database I/O or an external service.
The documented runtime version does not match the installed package
Follow the current release documentation, not an archived tutorial. This matters especially for NodeBB, where cached README copies list Node.js 20+ while the current requirement is Node.js 22+. Pin supported versions and document them so a routine system upgrade does not silently break the forum.

A practical selection checklist
- Choose Discourse when integrated features and maturity justify Docker and a 2–4 GB or larger production budget.
- Choose Flarum when you want a modern PHP forum and can manage Composer, PHP extensions and database tuning.
- Choose NodeBB when Node.js, MongoDB or Redis fit your existing operations and real-time behavior is important.
- Choose MyBB or phpBB when a conventional PHP forum, low operating complexity and established workflows matter more than a newer architecture.
- Regardless of platform, reserve budget for SMTP, off-site backups, monitoring, swap where appropriate and periodic VPS upgrades.
Bottom line
Discourse is the best all-round choice for a larger, feature-heavy community, provided you can support its Docker-only stack and memory peaks. Flarum is the most attractive low-resource PHP candidate, while NodeBB is compelling for a Node.js and Redis/MongoDB environment. On a 1–2 GB VPS, start with Flarum, NodeBB or MyBB, validate real usage and keep a migration path to a larger server. Whatever you install, treat email, backups, patching and measurement as part of the forum—not as optional follow-up work.
