Recommended Free Tools
For most VPS owners, Portainer Community Edition is the best general-purpose Docker manager. Choose Coolify instead when you want a self-hosted application platform that deploys from Git, Dockerfiles, Compose files or images and handles domains, HTTPS and health checks. Choose Dockge when Compose YAML is your source of truth and you want a focused, lightweight-style stack editor. Choose Yacht when a template catalogue and one-click installs matter most.
These tools solve different problems rather than competing as identical dashboards. The right choice depends on whether you administer containers and environments, operate an application platform, edit Compose projects, or install prebuilt services from templates.

Which Docker manager should you use on a VPS?
| Manager | Best fit | Primary abstraction | Deployment inputs | Important published detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Portainer CE | General container administration, multiple environments or mixed platforms | Container and infrastructure control plane | Web interface and container-management workflows | Community Edition manages Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI. Its current documentation describes more than half a million regular users (2026 product-description crawl). |
| Coolify | Repeatable application, database and service deployment | Self-hosted PaaS and deployment control plane | Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Compose files or prebuilt images | Published minimum: 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB disk. It separates platform control from workload runtime. |
| Dockge | People who keep Compose files as the source of truth | Compose-stack editor and operator | Docker Compose YAML | Free, self-hosted web manager; default port 5001. |
| Yacht | Template-led, one-click container installation | Container UI with a template catalogue | Templates and container-management forms | Can manage optional remote hosts through a yacht-agent. |
There is no fair, reproducible cross-product resource benchmark establishing one of these as universally “the lightest.” Resource use varies with enabled features, the number of projects and the workloads running beside the manager. Treat the published Coolify minimum as a documented requirement, not a comparison score; public documentation for the other three does not establish equivalent CPU, memory or disk figures.
How the four tools differ
Portainer: the broadest administration surface
Portainer Community Edition is designed as a broad management layer. Its documentation says CE can build and manage resources in Docker, Docker Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI. That range matters if a VPS is only one environment in a larger setup, or if you expect to administer more than ordinary single-host Docker containers.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
On a single VPS, Portainer gives you a general dashboard rather than imposing a particular application-deployment model. You can continue to operate containers in the way your team already does while gaining a central interface. The breadth is the reason to choose it: it is a better match for mixed environments than a tool built exclusively around Compose stacks or application releases.
Portainer has Community and Business editions. CE is the open-source foundation. Business Edition adds business-oriented capabilities such as role-based access control, registry management and support, and requires a license key. Do not select BE merely because it sounds more complete; the licensing decision should follow a real need for those controls or support.

Coolify describes itself as an open-source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases and services on servers you control. Its workflow starts with an application definition—such as a Git repository, Dockerfile, Compose file or image—and then coordinates the operational pieces around it.
Those pieces include builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS and health checks. This is useful when the recurring task is releasing an application, not simply starting and stopping an already-defined container. Coolify’s documentation also states that it separates platform control from workload runtime. In practice, the management plane can be distinct from the servers that run workloads, while those workloads remain Docker resources on user-provided infrastructure.
That model brings more structure and more responsibility than a small Compose editor. It is a strong fit for several applications or services that need repeatable deployments and consistent domain and certificate handling. It is less compelling if you only want to inspect a few containers and occasionally restart them.
Dockge: Compose files first
Dockge is a free, self-hosted web manager for Docker Compose stacks. Its project guide centers the Compose file, so the YAML remains the durable description of a stack instead of being hidden behind a form-only configuration.

The interface supports creating, editing, starting, stopping, restarting, updating and deleting Compose projects. That makes Dockge a natural choice for a VPS where you already keep Compose files in a directory or repository and want a browser-based operator for the same stacks. The documented default web port is 5001; account for that port in your firewall or reverse-proxy configuration.
Dockge’s focus is also its boundary. It is not presented as a cross-orchestrator control plane like Portainer, nor as a full PaaS workflow like Coolify. Select it when direct Compose editing is more valuable than broader platform features.
Yacht: templates and one-click deployment
Yacht’s project description calls it a container-management UI focused on templates and one-click deployments. A template catalogue can reduce the amount of Docker knowledge needed to launch a common service: choose a template, provide the required values and deploy.
Yacht can also manage optional remote hosts through a yacht-agent. That is useful when the browser interface is on one machine and containers are on another host, but it adds another component whose access and updates must be secured. Yacht is the best match here for a catalogue-led experience, not for advanced orchestration or a Compose-centric source-control workflow.
Choose by your operating model
You administer containers and several kinds of environments
Choose Portainer CE when the main question is, “What is running, where is it running, and how do I administer it?” Its documented support for Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI gives it the widest scope in this group. A single VPS is fine, but the same management approach can extend to additional environments.
You deploy applications repeatedly
Choose Coolify when a release involves source code, builds, domains, TLS and health checks. Its inputs cover Git repositories, Dockerfiles, Compose files and images, so you can adopt it whether the application is built from source or already packaged. The separation between control plane and workload runtime is particularly relevant if the platform and application servers should not be the same machine.

You treat YAML as the authority
Choose Dockge when the Compose document should remain readable, reviewable and portable. Its create, edit and lifecycle actions are aimed at stacks, so you can make a quick operational change in the UI without abandoning the Compose representation.
You want a catalogue of ready-made services
Choose Yacht when template selection and one-click deployment are the deciding factors. It is appropriate for a personal VPS where convenience at initial installation outweighs the broader administration and deployment workflows offered by the other tools.
Requirements and installation planning
Portainer CE on Linux
The documented Linux installation prerequisites are a working Docker installation and sudo access. The management endpoint is HTTPS on port 9443. Port 8000 is optional and is used when Edge agents are part of the design.
- Confirm that Docker is installed and that the account performing the installation can use sudo.
- Decide whether this VPS will manage only its local Docker environment or whether you will add other environments later.
- Allow the HTTPS management port through the host firewall only as broadly as necessary. If Edge agents are required, plan separately for the optional agent port.
- Complete the official Linux installation and create the initial administrator account.
- Put the interface behind a trusted reverse proxy or otherwise restrict it to an administration network, then verify that the browser connection is using TLS.
Portainer is a control surface, not a backup system. Keep the data it stores and the deployment definitions for your containers in a backup plan before making major changes.
Coolify on a VPS
Coolify’s published minimum is 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM and 10 GB of disk. Those figures come from its 2026 self-hosting documentation and are minimum requirements, not a promise that every workload will fit comfortably. Builds, databases and application traffic consume additional resources.
The installation documentation recommends a fresh server where possible and provides an automated script. Running that process requires root or sudo access.

- Provision a VPS that meets at least the documented minimum and leave headroom for the applications and databases you plan to run.
- Use a fresh server when practical; avoid installing the platform on a host already carrying unknown services or conflicting configuration.
- Run the documented automated installation with root or sudo privileges.
- Create the administrator account immediately after installation rather than leaving the initial interface unattended.
- Back up
/data/coolify/source/.env. The file contains installation secrets, so store it as sensitive material with the same care as other credentials. - Set up domains, TLS and health checks through the platform only after firewall rules and DNS ownership are under control.
Coolify’s value appears after installation: the platform turns a repository, Dockerfile, Compose file or image into a managed deployment workflow. The control plane can be separated from the servers that run the workloads, so map which machine performs management and which machines consume CPU, memory and disk before adding projects.
Dockge on a Compose-based VPS
Dockge’s project guide identifies it as a self-hosted web manager for Compose stacks and documents port 5001 as the default. Before installing, decide where the Compose files will live and how they will be backed up. The UI can edit and operate a project, but the YAML is still the useful portable record of the stack.
- Prepare the VPS with Docker and a protected location for Compose project files.
- Install Dockge using the project’s current instructions and confirm which host interface exposes port 5001.
- Restrict direct access to that port, or publish it through a reverse proxy with TLS and authentication.
- Import or create a Compose project, then use the documented create, edit, start, stop, restart, update and delete actions as needed.
- Back up both the Compose files and any persistent-volume data used by the applications.
Yacht and remote hosts
Yacht is centered on templates and one-click deployments. If all containers run on the same VPS, keep the first installation simple and validate the template inputs before adding services. If you use a remote host, Yacht’s documentation describes a yacht-agent for that connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Install the Yacht interface on a secured management host.
- Review templates before deployment, including image, port, volume and credential fields.
- For remote management, install and authenticate the yacht-agent on the target host according to the current project instructions.
- Restrict agent and interface traffic to trusted networks, then deploy a non-critical container as a connectivity test.
- Record which templates were used and back up persistent data outside the container itself.
Security controls every choice needs
A Docker manager is an administrative plane. A leaked login or exposed management socket can be more damaging than an exposed application, so treat the interface as privileged infrastructure.
- Limit network exposure. Keep Portainer’s 9443 endpoint, Dockge’s 5001 endpoint, Yacht’s interface and any Coolify control endpoints behind a firewall or reverse proxy. Do not expose administration ports to the entire internet when a VPN, allow-list or private network can be used.
- Use TLS. Portainer documents HTTPS on 9443; use encrypted access for every manager and terminate TLS at a trusted reverse proxy when appropriate.
- Protect credentials and secrets. Coolify’s
/data/coolify/source/.envcontains installation secrets. Backups of that file must be access-controlled and encrypted at rest. - Separate management from workloads deliberately. Coolify explicitly supports separating platform control from workload runtime. For the other tools, document which host has management access and which host actually runs containers.
- Minimize privileges. Give administrators only the access they need, especially when a manager can reach multiple environments or remote hosts.
- Keep agents and managers current. A remote yacht-agent or Portainer Edge agent extends the trusted computing boundary; include it in patching and credential-rotation procedures.
Backups, updates and recovery
Back up the definitions, not just the UI
For Compose-based deployments, back up the Compose files, environment files and referenced configuration. For template-created containers, record the template, image tag, mounts, ports and environment values so the service can be reconstructed. Persistent application data belongs in its own tested backup routine.
Back up manager state
Each manager has its own configuration and credentials. Include its persistent data in the backup plan, with special handling for secrets. A backup that contains only application volumes may restore the workloads but leave you without the management configuration required to operate them.
Best Value
Test restoration before an emergency
Restore a representative Compose stack or service on a separate Docker host. Verify that DNS, certificates, volumes, credentials and health checks behave as expected. A successful file copy is not the same as a proven recovery.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Plan updates as changes to production infrastructure
Read the current upstream release notes before updating a manager, agent or template. Capture a backup, note the running versions and schedule a maintenance window. For Coolify, include the control-plane server and every workload server in the change plan; for remote-agent designs, update and test both ends of the connection.
Common selection mistakes
- Choosing by the word “lightweight.” No comparable benchmark establishes a universal winner. Pick the smallest feature set that matches the operating model, then measure your own VPS under representative workloads.
- Using a PaaS for a simple container list. Coolify is valuable for deployments and application operations, but its platform workflow is unnecessary if you only need basic container administration.
- Using a broad control plane when Compose is enough. Portainer’s wider environment support is useful, yet Dockge is more direct when Compose YAML is the authority and no cross-platform administration is required.
- Treating templates as a substitute for review. Yacht’s one-click flow saves time, but inspect image sources, ports, volumes, credentials and update behavior before deploying a template.
- Exposing management ports during initial setup. Temporary internet exposure often becomes permanent. Put firewall and TLS rules in place before inviting users or attaching remote hosts.
- Backing up only containers. Containers are replaceable; persistent data, Compose definitions, environment files and manager state are what make a recoverable service.
A practical decision checklist
Answer these questions in order:
- Do you need to administer more than ordinary single-host Docker? If yes, start with Portainer CE because its documented scope includes Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Podman and Azure ACI.
- Is deployment from Git, Dockerfiles, Compose or images the recurring task? If yes, evaluate Coolify and its application-platform workflow.
- Are Compose files the source of truth? If yes, Dockge provides the most direct match.
- Do you primarily want ready-made templates and one-click installs? If yes, Yacht is the focused option.
- Can the VPS meet the documented platform requirement? Coolify requires at least 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 10 GB disk according to its published minimum; leave additional capacity for workloads.
- Can you secure and recover the control plane? If you cannot restrict management ports, protect secrets, back up definitions and test restoration, postpone installation until those operational basics are ready.
Final recommendation by scenario
General-purpose VPS administration: Portainer CE is the default recommendation. Its broad environment support makes it the least restrictive choice when your needs may expand beyond one Docker host.
Application platform on user-controlled servers: Coolify is the better fit when releases, domains, HTTPS, health checks and repeatable builds matter. Plan for its documented minimum resources, a fresh server where possible and careful protection of the control-plane secrets.
Compose-first homelab or small production stack: Dockge keeps the workflow close to the YAML you already maintain, with a focused lifecycle interface and documented default port 5001.
