The most useful VPS stack for 2026 is a small, maintainable set of services rather than a giant catalog: Vaultwarden for passwords, Nextcloud for files and collaboration, Jellyfin for personal media, Uptime Kuma for monitoring, and either Caddy or Traefik as the HTTPS reverse proxy. These are practical choices for different jobs, not a verified popularity ranking. Self-hosting also means you—not the application vendor—own patching, backups, exposure to the internet and uptime decisions.
For this kind of stack, Antihost VPS provides Linux VPS plans with full root access and one-click images for Docker, Coolify, OpenClaw, OpenVPN and Hermes Agent.

A practical 2026 VPS stack
A VPS becomes useful when every service has a clear purpose and shares a controlled operational base. Put internet-facing traffic behind one reverse proxy, keep application data in persistent volumes, use separate databases where the application requires them, and monitor both the services and the host. The following apps cover the most common reasons people ask what they should self-host.

| Vaultwarden | A lightweight, Bitwarden-compatible password server | It is an unofficial implementation; it must be patched and backed up like any security-sensitive service. |
| Nextcloud | Private files, calendars, contacts and collaboration | Choose between the official image and All-in-One deployment according to your existing proxy and how much wiring you want to manage. |
| Jellyfin | Streaming your own music and video library | Storage, bandwidth and transcoding hardware determine the experience; no universal hardware requirement applies. |
| Uptime Kuma | Checking whether your sites and services respond | It is most valuable when its monitor is independent of the service it checks. |
| Caddy or Traefik | Routing domains to containers and terminating TLS | Caddy emphasizes a concise configuration file; Traefik discovers Docker services from labels. |
Do not treat secondary names sometimes appearing in 2026 roundups as verified recommendations. The individual picks in those roundups are not verified recommendations, so the list above deliberately stays with services whose role and deployment facts are established.

Design the VPS before installing applications
Use one entry point for HTTP and HTTPS
Expose only the reverse proxy to the public internet wherever possible. It receives requests for each domain, obtains and renews certificates, and forwards traffic to private container networks. Administrative interfaces, databases and internal APIs should not have their own public ports unless a specific use case requires it.
Separate persistent data from containers
Containers are replaceable runtime units. Application uploads, configuration, encryption keys, media libraries and database files belong in named volumes or bind-mounted directories that survive a rebuild. A backup of a container image alone cannot restore your service state.
Plan DNS and names first
Give each public service a dedicated hostname, such as vault.example.com, cloud.example.com and media.example.com. Point the DNS records at the VPS before requesting certificates. Keep private-only tools on an internal network or behind an access control layer rather than publishing every dashboard.

Pin application versions instead of silently following a moving latest tag. Read release notes, back up persistent data, update one service at a time, verify health checks and retain a rollback path. Security fixes should be applied promptly, but a controlled update is safer than an untested batch upgrade.

Both can terminate TLS and route domains to containers, but they express configuration differently. Pick the one that matches how you expect to operate the stack.

| Decision point | Caddy | Traefik |
|---|---|---|
| Primary configuration style | A Caddyfile with site blocks and directives | Docker labels for routers and services, plus static configuration |
| Automatic HTTPS | Yes, when DNS points to the server and ports 80 and 443 are reachable | Supports automated certificate workflows when configured with an ACME resolver |
| Best fit | A small number of domains and a readable, centralized file | A Compose-heavy environment where services should self-describe through labels |
| Main operational concern | The data directory must be writable and persistent so certificates and state survive restarts | Docker provider access and label mistakes can expose the wrong container or route |
When Caddy is the simpler choice
Caddy can serve a configured domain over HTTPS automatically. The prerequisites are concrete: DNS must resolve to the VPS, inbound ports 80 and 443 must reach it, and Caddy needs a writable, persistent data directory. A minimal Caddyfile conceptually maps a hostname to an internal service:
cloud.example.com {
reverse_proxy nextcloud:80
}
The actual upstream port and container name must match your Compose network. Keep the Caddy data directory outside the disposable container layer, because it stores certificate and other runtime state.
When Traefik is the better fit
Traefik discovers Docker containers through labels after the Docker provider is enabled in its static configuration. A typical deployment has two configuration layers: static settings enable providers.docker and define entry points, while labels on each application container define routers, host rules, TLS and the destination port. This makes adding a service convenient in a large Compose project, but every label becomes part of your routing configuration and deserves review.
services:
app:
image: example/app:1.2.3
labels:
- traefik.enable=true
- traefik.http.routers.app.rule=Host(`app.example.com`)
- traefik.http.services.app.loadbalancer.server.port=8080
The snippet illustrates the model, not a complete production file: certificate resolvers, networks, access controls and persistent storage still need to be configured. Give Traefik only the Docker socket access it needs, preferably through a restricted socket proxy or equivalent control, and inspect labels before exposing a new service.
Decision rule
- Choose Caddy when a short, centralized configuration and automatic HTTPS are your priorities.
- Choose Traefik when many Compose services should declare their own routing with labels.
- Do not run two public reverse proxies on the same ports. If an All-in-One application expects to own the proxy ports, use its documented alternative integration or place it behind the proxy you already operate.
Vaultwarden: the lightweight password service
Vaultwarden is an unofficial Bitwarden-compatible server written in Rust, formerly known as bitwarden_rs. Compatibility makes it useful for clients designed for the Bitwarden ecosystem, but “compatible” does not mean it is the official server. Treat it as a security-critical application: patch it, restrict administration, protect its encryption-related data and test restores.

Database choices
Since version 1.17.0, the single Vaultwarden image supports SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL backends. The right choice depends on the size and operational maturity of the installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Backend | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SQLite | One small user base, modest write activity and the simplest possible deployment | It is a file in the application data directory, so backups must capture a consistent copy and concurrent write workloads remain limited. |
| MySQL | You already operate MySQL or need a separate database service | More moving parts, credentials and upgrade work than a single SQLite file. |
| PostgreSQL | You standardize on PostgreSQL or expect a larger, busier installation | Requires its own persistent database volume, backup procedure and maintenance. |
Do not select a database solely because it sounds more enterprise-grade. A small installation is often easier to restore when its storage and backup procedure are simple; a larger installation benefits from a dedicated database with tested dumps and recovery.
HTTPS is a functional requirement
The web vault requires HTTPS and a secure browser context. Put Vaultwarden behind Caddy or Traefik rather than serving it directly over an unencrypted port. Verify that the certificate is valid, the hostname is the one configured in clients, and HTTP redirects to HTTPS before inviting users.
Protect the administrator endpoint
A 2026 setup guide recommends storing the administrator token as an Argon2id hash rather than plain text. Follow the current Vaultwarden documentation for the exact environment-variable format and generate a strong, unique secret. Restrict the admin endpoint by network policy or an additional access layer where practical, and never paste the token into a public issue, shell history or Compose file committed to source control.
Vaultwarden update and backup routine
- Record the current image tag and read the release notes for breaking changes or database migrations.
- Stop or quiesce the service as required by the release, then back up its persistent data and database.
- Pull the pinned replacement image and recreate only the Vaultwarden service.
- Check login, browser extension synchronization, attachments and the administrator page.
- Keep the previous image and backup until you have confirmed a restore path.
Back up the data directory and database, not just the container. Perform a test restore on a separate network; an untested backup is only an assumption.

Nextcloud: private files and collaboration
Nextcloud is the broadest application in this stack. It can provide file synchronization, sharing, calendars and contacts, but it also has more dependencies and upgrade considerations than a single-purpose service.
Official image versus All-in-One
| Deployment | Strength | Constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Official Docker image | Maximum control over PHP, the database, Redis, storage and the reverse proxy | You must wire, secure, upgrade and back up those components yourself. |
| All-in-One (AIO) | Bundled components and an opinionated installation path | Its instructions assume no web server or reverse proxy is already present. A VPS already using Caddy or Traefik needs the documented alternative path. |
Choose the official image when your VPS already has a proxy and you are comfortable managing a database and cache. Choose AIO when you want its bundled orchestration and can follow its network and port assumptions. Do not blindly apply AIO instructions to a host where another proxy already owns ports 80 or 443.
Pin the version deliberately
Nextcloud’s published tags are not identical across channels. On October 14, 2026, Docker Hub listed 35.0.1 as the latest Apache tag, with 34.x and 33.x still supported, while the GitHub releases page showed 34.0.0 as the default channel. Because those views can differ, check the current tags immediately before deployment and pin the exact version you select. Do not assume that latest means the same release everywhere.
Dependencies and storage
A production installation normally needs persistent file storage, a supported database and a cache such as Redis for locking and responsive concurrent access. Keep the database on persistent storage separate from the application container. Decide where user files live, how much growth you can tolerate and whether snapshots are sufficient for your recovery objective. Database dumps and file backups must be coordinated so that a restore produces a consistent application state.
Reverse-proxy checks
- Forward the original HTTPS scheme and host headers so Nextcloud can generate correct links.
- Set the trusted-domain and overwrite settings required by your chosen deployment.
- Allow large uploads and long-running requests deliberately; proxy defaults may be too small for file synchronization.
- Test WebDAV, desktop synchronization, mobile access, sharing links and calendar/contact clients after every proxy or version change.
Jellyfin: your media server
Jellyfin organizes and streams media that you own or are licensed to access. Its appeal on a VPS is remote access from a single library, but it is usually the most storage- and bandwidth-intensive service in this group.
Best Value
Direct play versus transcoding
If a client can play the original codec, resolution and audio format, the server may only need to send the file. When a client cannot, Jellyfin transcodes, which can consume substantial CPU or hardware-accelerated video resources. There is no single hardware requirement that fits every library, client and number of simultaneous viewers; no universal minimum applies across all such combinations. Test with your actual files and devices before moving a large library to a small VPS.
Operational safeguards
- Mount media read-only where the server does not need to modify files.
- Keep the Jellyfin configuration and metadata on persistent storage separate from the media volume.
- Limit public access to authenticated users and use HTTPS through the reverse proxy.
- Watch disk growth and outbound bandwidth; a media library can exhaust either faster than expected.
Uptime Kuma: monitor from outside the failure
Uptime Kuma can monitor HTTP(S), TCP and other endpoints and alert you when a service stops responding. Install it on the same VPS for convenience, but do not rely on a monitor hosted only inside the exact failure domain you are trying to detect. If the VPS, its network or its reverse proxy fails, a local monitor may be unable to send an alert. Pair local checks with an external probe when availability matters.
Useful monitors to create
- One check per public hostname, including the expected status code and a sensible timeout.
- A direct health endpoint for internal applications where available.
- Disk-space and certificate-expiry checks through the host or an external service.
- A notification channel that is different from the application being monitored.
Monitoring should produce an actionable signal, not a stream of false alarms. Start with availability and certificate checks, then add resource thresholds after observing normal behavior.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to deploy the stack safely
- Harden the VPS. Apply operating-system updates, create a non-root administrative account, use key-based SSH, restrict the firewall to required ports and enable unattended security updates only when you understand their behavior.
- Create a Compose layout. Keep one project or clearly separated projects, with an
.envfile stored outside version control for secrets. Pin image tags and declare named volumes for every persistent directory. - Deploy the reverse proxy first. Confirm DNS, ports 80/443, certificate issuance and a test upstream before adding sensitive applications.
- Add the database services. Use private Docker networks, strong generated credentials and persistent volumes. Verify that a database dump can be restored before relying on it.
- Deploy Vaultwarden and Nextcloud. Configure their proxy headers, HTTPS URLs and storage paths. Complete a login, upload, synchronization and restore smoke test for each.
- Add Jellyfin and Uptime Kuma. Import a small media sample, test playback from your target clients and configure monitors and notifications.
- Document recovery. Record domain names, image tags, environment variables, volume paths, firewall rules and restore commands in a private location that remains available if the VPS is lost.
RAM, CPU and storage planning
There is no reliable universal RAM number for this exact app combination, so avoid treating common “2 GB” or “4 GB” figures as guarantees. Actual demand varies with concurrent users, PHP workers, database cache, media transcoding, file indexing, scan frequency and the operating system.
Measure instead of guessing
- Watch memory pressure, swap activity, load average, CPU saturation, disk latency and filesystem usage during realistic workloads.
- Test the heaviest expected action: a Nextcloud upload and scan, several simultaneous file clients, a Jellyfin transcode and a database backup.
- Leave headroom for updates, certificate renewals, log growth and temporary database operations.
- Scale vertically when sustained pressure is visible; move media or databases to separate hosts when one workload dominates.
Storage planning is equally important. Estimate the Nextcloud file repository, Jellyfin media, database growth, logs and at least one local backup window. Keep an off-host copy for disaster recovery; a snapshot on the same VPS does not protect against account loss, filesystem corruption or provider failure.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Patch the host, reverse proxy and every application on a documented schedule.
- Pin versions, read release notes and keep a rollback image.
- Use HTTPS for every login and API exposed beyond a trusted private network.
- Store secrets outside public repositories and rotate them after suspected exposure.
- Restrict database ports and administration interfaces to private networks.
- Back up persistent files and databases, encrypt backups and test restores periodically.
- Review proxy routes and Docker labels whenever a service is added or renamed.
- Monitor certificate expiry, disk capacity, failed logins and service availability.
- Remove unused containers, images, ports and DNS records.
Which apps should you install first?
Start with the service that solves an immediate problem and has a recovery plan. Vaultwarden is a strong first application only when HTTPS, secure secrets and tested backups are ready. Nextcloud deserves a dedicated storage and database plan before users depend on it. Jellyfin is a good addition when your VPS has suitable storage, bandwidth and transcoding capacity. Uptime Kuma should be added as soon as there is something worth monitoring, ideally with an external vantage point. Caddy is the shortest path to a readable proxy configuration; Traefik is preferable when a growing Compose estate benefits from label-driven discovery.
This order keeps the VPS understandable: establish the network boundary, deploy one stateful service, verify backup and restore, then add workloads while watching real resource use. The best self-hosted VPS is not the one with the most containers; it is the one you can patch, monitor and recover.
