There is no universally best C# test framework for Selenium. Selenium WebDriver controls the browser; a .NET test framework discovers and runs tests, evaluates assertions, and reports pass or fail. NUnit and MSTest have explicit Selenium documentation examples, while Microsoft also lists xUnit.net and TUnit among popular .NET testing frameworks. Choose based on your team’s existing .NET tooling, target platform, and test-execution needs—not on an unsupported claim that one framework is fastest or best.
What a Selenium C# testing framework does
Selenium WebDriver is the browser-control layer. It communicates with a browser, but it does not supply test discovery, assertions, pass/fail decisions, or test reporting. A C# Selenium project therefore combines the Selenium .NET binding with a separate .NET test framework and the tooling needed to run it.

Keep the roles distinct: the framework runs and evaluates your test; WebDriver performs browser actions. Selenium Server and Grid are separate components for remote browser communication, not replacements for a test framework.

How the main .NET framework options compare
| Framework | What is established | What to evaluate for Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| NUnit | Selenium’s .NET materials use NUnit in a starter-project path and as a .NET example. | A documented Selenium route. Check support for your target runtime and configure parallel execution deliberately; it is not enabled by default in NUnit. |
| MSTest | Selenium shows MSTest package references in an example project. Microsoft identifies MSTest as its framework for .NET languages and documents support for VSTest and Microsoft.Testing.Platform. | A natural candidate to evaluate with Microsoft’s testing tools. Tests run sequentially within an assembly by default; configure concurrency only after assessing isolation and shared resources. |
| xUnit.net | Microsoft lists xUnit.net among popular .NET testing choices. | Review collection-level behavior and configuration, and distinguish parallel execution within an assembly from running multiple assemblies concurrently. Runner settings can affect execution. |
| TUnit | Microsoft lists TUnit among popular .NET testing choices. | The Selenium-specific materials considered here do not provide a TUnit Selenium example. Verify the framework, runner, IDE, CI, and package compatibility for your project before adopting it. |
This comparison does not establish a universal winner or a neutral performance ranking. Selenium’s examples provide clearer direct setup evidence for NUnit and MSTest; that is not proof that xUnit.net or TUnit cannot be used.

Choose for your project, not a leaderboard
- Confirm the project and tooling. Identify the target .NET framework, existing test runner, IDE workflow, and CI requirements.
- Choose the test framework separately from WebDriver. Add the Selenium .NET binding and the framework’s required SDK, adapter, or runner. Package choices and compatibility depend on the project and test platform.
- Check how the suite will be used. Review data-driven tests, fixtures, filtering, reports, and support for your target framework and test platform. The available documentation does not establish a complete feature-by-feature matrix across all four options.
- Decide whether parallel browser execution is appropriate. Verify that tests isolate browser sessions, test data, and shared resources before enabling concurrency. A framework can schedule tests in parallel; it cannot make shared browser state safe for you.
Install and run a Selenium .NET test project
The Selenium .NET installation guide uses the .NET CLI to add the WebDriver package and demonstrates a test project with a target framework and test SDK/adapter packages. The exact package versions in documentation examples are snapshots; check current package compatibility rather than treating an example version as a standing recommendation.
Start with the project template
Selenium’s example workflow includes creating an NUnit project with the .NET CLI, adding the Selenium WebDriver package, and running tests with dotnet test. The .NET SDK is a prerequisite. For another framework, use its appropriate template and runner packages instead of assuming the NUnit template applies unchanged.
Run and filter tests
Use dotnet test to execute the suite. Selenium’s example instructions also describe filtering by a fully qualified method name or by a unique test name. Exact filter syntax can depend on the test platform and adapter in the project, so check the runner’s current documentation if a filter is not recognized.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlan parallel execution carefully
NUnit
NUnit framework-level parallel execution is opt-in and declared with attributes. NUnit documents support on desktop .NET runtimes and .NET Standard 2.0, while its .NET Standard 1.6 build does not support it. Verify the actual target before relying on parallel execution.
MSTest
MSTest runs sequentially within an assembly by default. Microsoft documents configuration through assembly attributes, .runsettings, testconfig.json, and MSBuild properties, with class-level or method-level concurrency scopes. Tests that share state or resources may need DoNotParallelize.
xUnit.net
xUnit distinguishes parallel work within one assembly from concurrent execution of multiple assemblies. Its documentation describes collection-level behavior and configuration; runner-level settings can affect framework-level settings. Check both the framework version and the runner configuration.

Before enabling concurrency
- Give each test its own browser session unless safe sharing is intentional.
- Prevent tests from mutating the same account, records, files, or other shared resources at the same time.
- Confirm that the target runtime and test runner support the execution mode you configure.
- Start with a small subset of tests and investigate intermittent failures before scaling up parallel work.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a C# test framework or browser-test runner. It does not replace NUnit, MSTest, xUnit.net, TUnit, or Selenium WebDriver. It may be useful for a separate task—capturing a website as an image or PDF, including from an AI agent—but select your test framework based on the project requirements above.
