For a new project that needs cross-browser automation and screenshot testing, start by evaluating Playwright. It offers one API for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, along with a test runner, auto-waiting, and visual assertions. Cypress may better suit teams that prefer its web-testing workflow; Puppeteer is a fit for focused JavaScript browser scripts and captures. Keep Selenium if your existing WebDriver setup and language requirements make replacement costly. For screenshots without running a browser automation stack yourself, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes common consent banners and bills only clean shots.
How to choose a Selenium alternative
There is no universal replacement. First decide whether you need to automate application behavior, save screenshots for debugging, or compare screenshots as visual regression tests. Then match the tool to your required browser engines, programming language, test runner, workflow and CI environment.
- Browser coverage: List the browsers and engines your tests must cover. If WebKit or Safari behavior matters, verify support directly; an engine is not the same thing as every branded browser distribution.
- Language and runner: Choose bindings your team can maintain. Check whether the framework includes the runner, assertions, fixtures, parallel execution and reporting you need, or whether you must assemble them separately.
- Workflow: Validate the cases your tests actually use, including tabs, frames, downloads and authentication.
- Debugging and CI: Compare available failure artifacts and debugging tools, as well as installation, browser dependencies, parallelism, sharding and whether execution is self-managed or hosted.
- Migration cost: Account for existing Selenium bindings and WebDriver infrastructure, test volume, locator patterns and how much code must be redesigned. Replacing the tool does not guarantee a drop-in migration.
Do not choose on a generic speed claim. A meaningful comparison requires a reproducible benchmark that matches your application and CI conditions; the sources cited here do not establish comparative speed figures.

Which alternative fits your work?
Playwright: broad cross-browser testing with a bundled runner
Playwright is a strong starting point for a new project when you want a single API for Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Its official site lists TypeScript, Python, .NET and Java support, and documents auto-waiting, web-first assertions, parallel tests and trace artifacts. See the Playwright official site.
Its migration guide recommends using locators and web-first assertions; explicit waits are often unnecessary. Playwright also supports screenshot capture and screenshot assertions, but capture and visual comparison are different jobs: the latter needs controlled baselines and a consistent environment. See Playwright’s Puppeteer migration guide and its visual comparison guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Cypress: evaluate its application-testing workflow
Cypress is worth considering if its web application testing and debugging workflow suits your team. Its migration guide maps page and element screenshot calls to Cypress screenshot commands. It also notes a multi-tab option using the @cypress/puppeteer plugin, which requires Puppeteer as a dependency. Test your important workflows before migrating; see the Cypress migration guide.
Puppeteer: focused JavaScript automation and captures
Puppeteer is a candidate for focused JavaScript browser scripts, including screenshot capture. Playwright’s migration guide shows screenshot examples in both Puppeteer and Playwright and identifies WebKit support in Playwright, but not Puppeteer, in that comparison. Check Puppeteer’s official documentation for current details before committing to a browser-support or installation requirement.

Selenium WebDriver: keep it when its infrastructure fits
Selenium remains relevant when your organization already operates WebDriver infrastructure or its established language and browser requirements fit the work. Review the Selenium WebDriver documentation for current implementation details rather than relying on stale feature comparisons.
Managed browser execution is a separate decision
A hosted browser service changes where tests execute; it is not itself a replacement framework. BrowserStack is one managed execution option identified in a recent comparison, but verify its current service details and pricing with the provider before choosing it. The comparison is secondary: iTechGuides, September 29, 2026.

Choose the right kind of screenshot workflow
Debugging or reporting screenshots
If you need an image attached to a test result or report, prioritize a straightforward capture command, the desired browser and viewport, and a way to retrieve the artifact when a test fails. Confirm that the chosen framework’s current documentation covers the capture behavior you need.
Visual regression checks
A visual baseline only means something when the comparison run is sufficiently consistent with the run that created it. Playwright warns that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep the baseline and comparison environment consistent, and review changed snapshots deliberately; do not expect pixel-identical results across arbitrary machines. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
How to evaluate migration without rewriting blindly
- Inventory what Selenium does today. Record required browsers, language bindings, runner and reporting integrations, WebDriver infrastructure, test volume and CI constraints.
- Separate capture from assertions. Identify which tests only save images and which compare them to approved visual baselines.
- Pick representative workflows. Include the tabs, frames, downloads, authentication and application-specific behaviors your actual suite depends on.
- Prototype in the candidate tool. Verify the language, runner, browser coverage and debugging artifacts against current official documentation; use a small representative test set.
- Compare operational effort. Account for browser installation and dependencies, parallel execution, sharding, artifact retention and whether execution is self-managed or hosted.
- Plan coexistence or redesign. Existing Selenium tests may rely on WebDriver infrastructure or locator conventions. Estimate what can be reused and what needs a deliberate rewrite before setting a migration scope.
Or skip the browser setup
If the job is to fetch screenshots rather than run an end-to-end test suite, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common selection and migration pitfalls
- Assuming all browser labels mean the same coverage: Specify engines and branded browser distributions separately, then verify the current support matrix for the tool and version you plan to use.
- Expecting screenshot files to be stable across machines: Control the operating system, browser version and relevant runtime conditions for visual comparisons.
- Missing workflow-specific constraints: Test multi-tab behavior and other critical application flows early. Cypress’s documented multi-tab route, for example, involves a Puppeteer plugin and dependency.
- Assuming migration is a syntax conversion: Differences in locators, waiting behavior, assertions, runners and infrastructure can require test redesign. Follow the destination framework’s current migration guidance.
- Comparing frameworks with an unrelated hosted service: Decide which framework runs the tests, then separately decide whether execution should be self-managed or hosted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Playwright and Selenium in the same migration?
Yes. A staged evaluation can leave existing Selenium coverage in place while a representative subset is prototyped in Playwright; decide the coexistence period and eventual scope based on your infrastructure and workflow requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a screenshot API replace end-to-end testing?
No. A screenshot API is useful for obtaining page images or PDFs, but it does not by itself replace a test framework’s application interaction, assertions, fixtures or test-runner workflow.
