The best security key for you is one that your account supports and that connects to the devices you actually use. Compare a specific model’s FIDO support, USB-A or USB-C connector, and NFC availability—not just its brand. Yubico’s Security Key Series, Google Titan Security Key, and FEITIAN’s FIDO keys are documented options, but the available information does not establish a tested overall winner, a current price leader, or universal compatibility.
How a security key helps resist phishing
FIDO authentication uses public-key cryptography. The FIDO Alliance describes its standards as using cryptographic key pairs called passkeys to provide phishing-resistant authentication. In practical terms, the authentication is tied to the legitimate service, rather than relying on you to enter a reusable password or code into a lookalike site. This protection depends on the account supporting the relevant FIDO method and on your registering and using the key in a compatible sign-in flow. A key cannot protect an account that does not accept it, and it does not remove risks from weak account-recovery options. Google describes Titan as providing cryptographic proof that you are interacting with the service where the key was registered; that is Google’s product description, not a head-to-head security test. Physical security keys and passkeys are related, but not the same thing
A physical security key is a dedicated device you connect or tap during authentication. Passkeys are the FIDO credentials used in passwordless or multi-factor sign-in; they may be stored on a security key or on a phone or other device. Google says passkeys stored on phones and other devices can provide the same level of phishing protection as passkeys on security keys. Google Safety Center: Passkey
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Choose a physical key if you want a separate, portable authenticator or your service or organization specifically requires one. If your goal is simply phishing-resistant sign-in, check whether your accounts and devices support a passkey stored on a device you already use.

| Product family | Documented connection options | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Yubico Security Key Series | Yubico identifies USB and NFC capabilities for the series; this does not mean every model has both. | Check the exact model’s connector and NFC support, then confirm that the service accepts its FIDO authentication method. Yubico Security Key Series |
| Google Titan Security Key | Google documents USB-A/NFC and USB-C/NFC forms. | Google says Titan works with Google services and other services that support FIDO standards. Compatibility still depends on the device, service, and sign-in flow. Google names phones, Chromebooks, tablets, Chrome, and Advanced Protection Program among its compatibility contexts. | FEITIAN FIDO keys | FEITIAN describes its family as WebAuthn-compatible and says NFC-enabled keys are available. | Check the precise model’s connector and features. The family description does not establish every model’s feature set or current retail availability. FEITIAN FIDO Security Keys |
Choose by account, device, and connection
- Check account support first. Look in the service’s current security or sign-in settings and support instructions for FIDO security keys, security keys, or the relevant passkey method. Do not assume that support for passkeys means every physical key or authentication flow is supported.
- Match the connector to your devices. Choose USB-A or USB-C to suit the computer or mobile device you expect to use. If you want NFC, verify that the specific key has it and that both the device and the service’s authentication flow support tapping.
- Decide where you will sign in. A key used only with a computer may have different connection needs from one you also expect to use with a phone or tablet. Confirm compatibility for each device and service rather than relying on a product-family label.
- Buy only the features you need. A FIDO-only key is aimed at account authentication. Some users may need additional functions such as smart-card/PIV or OTP, but these product families’ descriptions do not provide enough detail for a model-by-model comparison of multi-protocol alternatives.
- Plan recovery before relying on the key. Where a service allows it, register a spare key or configure another recovery method. Follow that service’s current instructions; recovery rules vary by account.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The cited product information and FIDO overview identify legitimate options and explain the standard’s phishing-resistant design. They do not establish independent performance rankings, a universal compatibility list, current regional stock, or which key is the best value at the time you buy. Compare the exact model with the services and devices you need, and check current product and account-support pages before purchase.
