Recommended Free Tools
The best webinar recording tool depends on what needs to survive the event: the shared screen and webinar context, a flexible screen-and-audio capture, or separate participant tracks for editing. Start with the webinar platform’s own recorder when you need its presentation and event materials; choose OBS Studio for hands-on control of a desktop recording; consider Riverside when locally captured participant tracks are central to your edit.
Choose by the recording you need
| Recording goal | Best place to start | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve the presentation and webinar context | The host platform’s native recording, such as Zoom cloud recording | Available outputs depend on account, settings, and recording permissions. |
| Control a screen/window, camera, and audio in one desktop capture | OBS Studio | You configure and monitor the recording yourself; it does not create webinar-native materials such as chat or poll results. |
| Get separate participant recordings for post-production | Riverside, or supported Zoom Recording Studio sessions | Track availability, event eligibility, storage, and download limits differ by product and plan. |
These are workflow recommendations, not results of comparative hands-on testing. Compare tools by capture scope, output structure, recording and upload reliability, event compatibility, guest setup, storage, and editing needs—not by unsupported claims about which produces the best-looking recording.

Use the webinar platform when event context matters
Zoom computer and cloud recording
For a team already hosting in Zoom, first check its recording settings. Zoom computer recording is available to free and paid subscribers on supported desktop clients, but Zoom says it is not supported on iOS, iPad, or Android. An administrator may control whether users are allowed to record. Check both account and user permissions before the session. Zoom’s recording guidance describes the options and their dependencies.
Cloud recording settings can produce a composed recording or separate files for speaker view, gallery view, screen sharing, and participant audio. Depending on the enabled settings and account, Zoom can also save chat and caption outputs. That makes native recording a practical first choice when you need more than a raw desktop video—for example, a shared presentation plus event-related material. Do not assume every file is enabled by default; review the account’s cloud-recording settings and confirm what the event requires.

Zoom Recording Studio is a narrower option
Recording Studio is not a general-purpose switch for recording any Zoom webinar. Zoom documents Webinars Plus and Events licensing, cloud recording, supported desktop clients, adequate storage, and participant local storage as requirements. The support page also says webinar event types are unsupported, so confirm that your specific event type qualifies before designing an edit around it. Zoom’s Recording Studio requirements and limitations are the authoritative check.
In supported sessions, Recording Studio can create local participant video and audio files at up to 1080p and 60 frames per second. Screen shares are captured in the cloud recording only, not in local files. Zoom’s support page estimates approximately 2–3 GB per hour at 1080p60 for storage planning; it is an estimate, not a guaranteed file size. Local uploads can fail if a participant quits the client or loses network connectivity, so allow uploads to finish and verify the files before relying on them.

Choose a standalone recorder for direct control
OBS Studio
OBS Studio is a free, open-source desktop application that can record a display or window alongside a webcam, desktop audio, and microphone audio. It suits an operator who wants to select capture sources and manage a local recording rather than rely solely on a webinar host’s composed output. Its official quick-start guide covers initial setup. OBS is a recorder, not a webinar platform: it does not itself preserve platform-native chat, poll results, or other interaction artifacts.
Set up and test OBS before the event
- Install and open OBS Studio. In the Auto-Configuration Wizard, choose the option optimized for recording when prompted. Review the resulting video and output settings rather than assuming the defaults fit your system.
- Add the picture sources. In the Sources panel, use Display Capture for a whole display or Window Capture for a specific application. Add Video Capture Device if you want a webcam. Arrange and resize sources in the preview so the presentation remains readable and the presenter does not cover essential content.
- Choose audio inputs. Check the Audio Mixer while speaking and while webinar audio is playing. Select the intended microphone and desktop-audio device in Settings → Audio if the meters are not responding or the wrong devices are active. A short test should include both a microphone check and playback from the webinar.
- Set recording output and destination. Open Settings → Output and review the Recording section, including the recording path and format. Choose a location with enough free disk space, and use a format and workflow you can recover if the computer loses power; confirm the resulting file opens before the real event.
- Record a short rehearsal. Click Start Recording, capture a few minutes with the same screen, microphone, and webinar audio you expect to use, then stop and review the file. OBS specifically recommends testing settings before recording for real. Listen for missing or doubled audio and check that text remains legible.
- Record and verify. Start recording before the substantive content begins, monitor the audio meters and available disk space during the event, and stop the recording cleanly afterward. Play the saved file from beginning to end before deleting source material or assuming it is ready to publish.
OBS’s exact interface and available encoders can vary with operating system, hardware, and version. If your event relies on guest video or webinar interaction, keep the platform-native recording enabled where permitted; a desktop capture alone may not preserve separate participants or event materials.

Consider Riverside when separate tracks drive the edit
Riverside advertises local separate participant tracks, up to 4K video, and uncompressed audio for business recording. Those are vendor-stated capabilities, not independent test findings. Local capture can help editors work with each participant separately, but you should confirm the specific event workflow, plan, download allowance, and participant setup before relying on it for a webinar.
At the time reflected on Riverside’s business page, the listed tiers and prices were Free, Pro ($24/month), Live ($34/month), Webinar ($79/month), and Business (custom). Its pricing page listed separate-track download allowances of 15 hours on Pro, 20 on Grow, and 25 on Webinar, while recording itself was described as unlimited. Plan names, billing terms, prices, track limits, and geographic availability can change; verify them on the official Riverside pricing page before purchasing. Note that the listed business tiers and track-allowance plans are not a one-to-one set of names.

Prepare the recording workflow
- Confirm event-type support. In particular, do not assume Zoom Recording Studio supports a webinar event; its documented limits exclude webinar event types.
- Check permission and configuration. Verify recording is enabled at both account and user level, and ask an administrator if the setting is unavailable.
- Decide which file is authoritative. If you need a screen share in the finished edit, Zoom Recording Studio’s local participant tracks will not contain it; retain the cloud screen-share recording.
- Check storage and connectivity. Account for local disk space, cloud quotas, supported clients and operating systems, and the time and network stability needed for uploads to complete.
- Test the complete setup. Make and review a short recording using the same sources, event platform, and audio routing planned for the live session.
- Plan participant communication. Decide who starts the recording and how participants will be informed. Applicable recording and consent obligations depend on jurisdiction and circumstances; check the rules that apply to your event rather than assuming a universal requirement.
Fix common recording problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Recording control is missing or disabled | Recording is not enabled for the account or user, or an administrator controls access. | Check Zoom account and user recording settings and ask the account administrator to confirm permissions. |
| Zoom Recording Studio is unavailable for the event | The event type, license, client, cloud-recording setup, or storage does not meet documented requirements. | Confirm eligibility against Zoom’s current Recording Studio requirements before the session. |
| The local edit has participant video but no shared slides | Recording Studio stores screen shares in the cloud recording, not local participant files. | Retrieve the cloud recording’s screen-share file and include it in the edit. |
| A participant’s local file is missing or incomplete | The client may have quit or lost network before the local upload finished. | Keep the client open and connected until upload completion, then verify the file is present. |
| OBS recording has no microphone or webinar sound | The wrong input/output device is selected, or the source is not reaching the mixer. | Check Settings → Audio and watch the Audio Mixer meters while speaking and while webinar audio plays; make another short test. |
| OBS file is unreadable or missing after a session | The recording path, disk capacity, format, or clean stop was not verified. | Check Settings → Output → Recording for the destination, confirm free space, stop OBS cleanly, and test the saved file before the event. |
