Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor most Chromebook users, start with ChromeOS Screen Capture: it records the whole screen, a window or a selected area, and lets you choose camera and audio options without installing a separate recorder. For lessons and demos that need trimming, title overlays or a searchable transcript, use Google Screencast if it is available on your device. Choose Loom’s Chrome extension when hosted sharing is the priority; Loom’s desktop app does not support Chromebook OS.
Which Chromebook screen recorder should you choose?
| Option | Best for | What it offers | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS Screen Capture | Quick recordings saved as local files | Full-screen, window and partial-screen video; camera and audio settings; partial recordings can be saved as WebM or GIF | Files go to Downloads by default unless you change the destination. GIF recordings do not include audio or video input. |
| Google Screencast | Lessons and demonstrations that need light editing or transcripts | Trim, mute, title overlays, searchable transcripts, transcript navigation and translation | Requires ChromeOS version 104 or later; an administrator can disable it on a managed device. Language and device support affect transcription. |
| Loom Chrome extension | Browser-based recording with hosted link sharing | Browser extension workflow with screen and camera recording and hosted sharing and editing features | Extension capabilities differ from the desktop app, which is not Chromebook-compatible. Loom currently lists Starter limits of 25 videos per member and five minutes per screen recording; confirm its pricing page for current terms. |
Choose based on the job: use Screen Capture for a fast local file, Screencast for a lesson that benefits from transcript and editing tools, or Loom when you want a hosted sharing workflow. A browser extension is not the same thing as a native Chromebook desktop app.

How to record your Chromebook screen with ChromeOS Screen Capture
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is in the top row and has a rectangle with lines beside it. Alternatively, open Screen Capture from the shelf.
- In the capture controls, select Screen record.
- Choose Full screen, Partial screen or Window, then select the area or window if prompted.
- Open Settings in the capture controls to select the available camera and audio options. Check the microphone or device-audio setting before recording, especially if you need narration or application sound.
- Start recording. To stop, use the stop control on the shelf or press Search + Shift + X.
- For a partial-screen capture, choose video (.webm) or GIF where that format choice is offered. GIF does not include audio or video input.
ChromeOS saves recordings in Downloads by default. Change the destination in the capture settings if you want files saved elsewhere. After recording, open the file from its destination and play it back to check framing, sound and whether the intended content was captured.

Screencast is a separate app, not simply another mode in Screen Capture. Google says it is available on ChromeOS devices running version 104 or later. It is useful for recorded explanations where you want to trim the beginning or end, mute a section, add title overlays, or search and navigate a transcript. Transcripts can also be translated.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Check availability and language support
If Screencast is missing on a school or work Chromebook, the administrator may have disabled it. Creating a recording also depends on device and language support. Google says transcript processing may happen on-device or be sent to Google depending on the device and language, so consult your organization’s settings and applicable privacy terms before recording sensitive material.
Understand who can view a shared recording
For a managed account, a shared Screencast recording is visible to people in the managed domain who have the link. For a personal account, anyone with the link can view a recording shared by link. Treat the link as shareable access: use the account and sharing option appropriate for the audience, and avoid putting private content in a recording intended for broad access.

When Loom’s Chromebook extension makes sense
Loom’s Chrome extension records from the browser and offers full-screen, window, current-tab and camera-only choices. Its browser workflow can suit users who want hosted sharing rather than managing a local recording file. Atlassian’s support documentation notes constraints including camera-bubble behavior outside the browser and PDF limitations.

Do not download Loom’s desktop app expecting it to run on Chromebook OS: Loom’s desktop app is for Mac and Windows. Loom’s product page describes Chromebook recording, editing and hosted link sharing, while its pricing page currently lists Starter as free with up to 25 videos per member and five-minute screen recordings; Business lists unlimited recording time. Those are plan terms, not a guarantee they will remain unchanged, so verify them before signing up. Vendor-marketed resolution claims are not independent test results.

Make a clean recording and protect what you share
- Choose the capture area deliberately. Use a window or tab-sized area when unrelated notifications or browser details should stay out of frame; choose full screen when the whole workflow matters.
- Test audio before a long take. Confirm the right microphone or device-audio option is enabled in Screen Capture settings, then make a short sample and listen back.
- Use WebM when sound matters. GIF is a silent visual format in the documented partial-recording flow and does not capture camera/video input.
- Check local storage. Screen Capture uses Downloads by default. If a recording seems missing, look there first, then check whether the destination was changed.
- Review access before sharing. Screencast link visibility differs between personal and managed accounts. For Loom or any hosted workflow, check the service’s current sharing controls before distributing the link.
- Get permission before recording other people. A recording may capture voices, messages, account details or classroom/work content. Follow applicable law and your school or employer’s policy, and remove sensitive material before sharing.
Troubleshooting common Chromebook recording problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The Screen Capture controls do not appear | The shortcut was mistyped or the Show windows key was not identified | Use the shelf’s Screen Capture control or press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then choose Screen record. |
| The recording has no narration or system sound | The relevant audio option was not enabled, or the wrong input was selected | Open Settings in the capture controls, select the intended audio option and make a short test recording. Check microphone permissions if recording through a browser extension. |
| The webcam is missing from the recording | The camera option was not selected or the chosen recording workflow does not show it as expected | Check Screen Capture settings before starting. With Loom, remember that its camera-bubble behavior outside the browser has documented constraints. |
| The video is missing or saved in an unexpected place | The default destination is Downloads, or the folder was changed | Check Downloads and review the destination in Screen Capture settings. |
| Screencast is not installed or available | The device may be below ChromeOS 104, or an administrator may have disabled the app | Check the ChromeOS version and ask the school or work administrator about availability. |
| A Screencast transcript is unavailable | Device or language support may not meet the requirements | Check that the device language is supported for recording and transcription. |
| A managed Screencast link does not work for an outside viewer | Managed-account sharing is restricted to people in the managed domain who have the link | Share through an approved method for the intended audience rather than assuming a managed link is public. |
If you meant keeping a YouTube channel live, not recording the screen
Screen recorders create files or hosted recordings; they do not keep a YouTube live stream running from uploaded video. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for looping uploaded recordings or playlists on YouTube. It is not Chromebook screen-recording software and does not go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo, then start your free first day.
