The best screen recorder for PC depends on what you need to capture. OBS Studio is a strong free choice for users who want control over gameplay, desktop, webcam and audio sources. Bandicam is a Windows-focused option for screen and game recording, with a five-minute limit on each free recording. Camtasia is worth considering if you want recording and editing in one workflow. There is no source-supported universal winner, and the comparisons below are based on documented features and editorial assessments—not matched hands-on performance tests.
How to choose the best screen recorder for PC
Start with what you intend to record, then check whether the tool supports the inputs, controls and post-production you need. A recorder suited to a narrated tutorial may be more complicated than necessary for a quick desktop clip; recording console footage requires a different input path from capturing a PC game.

- Capture target: full desktop, a single window, a game, a webcam, or console footage.
- Platform and hardware: supported sources and encoding options can vary by operating system and hardware.
- Audio: desktop sound, microphone narration, application audio, or separate tracks.
- Editing: whether you want to edit the recording in the same application or use a separate editor.
- Setup: a scene-based recorder offers more control, but may take longer to learn than a simpler workflow.
- Limits and licensing: confirm current recording duration limits, watermarks, output options, trial terms and price on the vendor’s site before committing.

When OBS makes sense
- You want to record gameplay, the desktop, a webcam or a capture-card feed.
- You want to choose and configure sources instead of relying on a single fixed capture mode.
- You are willing to spend time checking the setup before recording.
TechRadar describes OBS as free and open source and lists Windows, macOS and Linux availability. Its review also notes that the controls can overwhelm newcomers; that is an editorial usability judgment, not a measured setup-time comparison.
Audio and a first test recording
OBS’s documentation says application audio capture is supported in Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, with beta labeling in the guide. Some applications may need audio-routing workarounds, so do not assume every program’s sound will behave identically. Check the meters and make a short test recording before a long session. OBS specifically recommends a brief test to uncover problems before relying on a recording.

The comparison does not establish current pricing, licensing or trial terms; check TechSmith’s current product information before purchase.

Limits of the comparisons
The tools above were not tested on matched PCs, so this guide does not rank CPU overhead, frame loss, recording quality or setup speed. Exact current eligibility for Xbox Game Bar and NVIDIA capture is not established here; verify it with Microsoft or NVIDIA before relying on either for a specific PC.

A screen recorder captures what is happening on your PC; it is not the same job as keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock from pre-recorded videos. For that separate use, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it loops uploaded videos on YouTube, so your computer does not have to stay on.
