If you want Star Wars podracing now, play STAR WARS Episode I Racer. If you want a modern-feeling anti-gravity racer built around mastering futuristic craft, choose Redout 2. They scratch different itches: one is a legacy game rooted in the franchise, while the other offers original sci-fi vehicles and competitive racing. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is scheduled for October 6, 2026, so its announced features are not yet a reviewed experience.

Play STAR WARS Episode I Racer for podracing
This is the most direct pick if what appeals to you about Galactic Racer is the Star Wars setting, recognizable racing fantasy, or the idea of piloting a podracer. LucasArts developed it, and Lucasfilm/Disney published it. Released May 17, 1999, it is a legacy title—not a preview of the visual presentation or systems planned for the 2026 game.

Steam’s store description says the game draws on the podracing sequence in The Phantom Menace and lists over 21 podracers, over 21 tracks, and eight worlds. Those are counts in the store description, not an independent assessment of the game. Choose it for franchise familiarity and classic podracing rather than expecting the same scope or design as a new release.

Choose Redout 2 for futuristic craft and a high skill ceiling
Redout 2 is the better fit if you are after speed, anti-gravity vehicles, and learning to control a futuristic machine rather than Star Wars lore. Steam describes it as a sequel to Redout, with customizable hoverships, a single-player campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a high skill ceiling. It was released June 16, 2022.
That makes it a distinct alternative, not a stand-in for podracing. Its overlap with Galactic Racer is the broad science-fiction racing appeal. The available listing identifies competitive multiplayer for Redout 2; do not assume the unreleased Galactic Racer offers the same multiplayer details.

What Galactic Racer has announced so far

Those are official promotional descriptions, not independent quality judgments. Lucasfilm Games executive producer Craig Derrick described the aim as: “Our goal with Galactic Racer is to deliver a racing experience that’s cinematic, skill-driven, and unmistakably Star Wars, and this gameplay reveal is a major step toward that vision,” in StarWars.com’s gameplay-trailer coverage. The quote expresses a design goal; it does not establish how the finished game handles or performs.
