Best Routers for Large Homes: Choose Mesh or One Powerful Router

For large homes with dead zones, a mesh system is usually the practical starting point. Compare the Deco BE63 with standalone and premium alternatives, and learn what coverage claims do—and don’t—tell you.

For a large or multi-level home where one router leaves dead zones, start with a mesh system: RTINGS names the TP-Link Deco 7 Pro BE63 its top large-home pick and best tested mesh system in its 2026 guides. Begin with a two-unit kit, place the nodes carefully, then add another only if weak areas remain. If a single central router may be enough, the TP-Link Archer BE550 is a reasonable standalone alternative.

Best Wi-Fi router for a large home: TP-Link Deco 7 Pro BE63

The BE63 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system, so it uses multiple units to extend coverage rather than asking one router to reach every room. RTINGS recommends it as its top choice for large homes and its best tested mesh system. In RTINGS’ test conditions, it maintained high speeds up to 100 feet; that is a reviewer finding, not a promise about a different house. (RTINGS large-home guide; RTINGS mesh guide)

RTINGS recommends beginning with two units and adding a node if coverage is still inadequate. The system has four 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports and is configured and managed through an app. Its browser interface offers limited controls, while advanced time management and network-wide antivirus features require a TP-Link HomeShield subscription. These trade-offs matter if you want detailed router settings or parental and security tools without recurring fees.

When one router is enough: TP-Link Archer BE550

If you would rather start with one central unit, RTINGS selects the Archer BE550 as its mid-range large-home standalone option. It is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router with 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands, plus five 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports for wired devices. RTINGS identifies 5GHz range as a weakness, so it is a less suitable bet when the main problem is distant rooms or persistent dead zones. If those remain after placing the router well, RTINGS considers mesh the better approach. Devices need Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 support to benefit from its 6GHz band. (RTINGS large-home guide)

Other mesh options worth considering

ASUS ZenWiFi ET9: upper mid-range Wi-Fi 6E

RTINGS recommends the ZenWiFi ET9 as an upper mid-range large-home option for people who do not own many Wi-Fi 7 devices. It is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E mesh system with a 2.5Gbps WAN port and three 1Gbps LAN ports. RTINGS says its features do not require a monthly subscription. Wi-Fi 7 clients can connect, but they will not reach the same peak speeds as on a Wi-Fi 7 system. (RTINGS large-home guide)

NETGEAR Orbi 970: premium quad-band mesh

NETGEAR describes the three-unit Orbi 970 as a quad-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with dedicated backhaul, claiming coverage up to 10,000 square feet and support for up to 200 connected devices. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent guarantees for every home. WIRED describes it as fast with expansive coverage but very expensive, and says full parental controls require a separate subscription. (NETGEAR Orbi 970 specifications; WIRED review)

TP-Link Deco BE85: flagship performance for demanding setups

TP-Link publishes speed maps for the Deco BE85 using a 4,600-square-foot, two-floor, five-bedroom test home. The maps distinguish wired and wireless backhaul and 4×4 and 2×2 clients that support MLO; the stated home size describes the test setting, not a coverage guarantee. TP-Link also notes that Wi-Fi 7 features such as MLO and 320MHz bandwidth require compatible client devices, and regional rules may limit channel bandwidth. WIRED found wide coverage and excellent performance in its testing but considers this flagship overkill for homes without very fast multi-gig broadband and many Wi-Fi 7 devices. NETGEAR Orbi 870: another Wi-Fi 7 mesh choice

Tom’s Guide describes the Orbi 870 three-pack as covering up to 9,000 square feet. That is a product coverage figure reported by the guide, not a result to expect in every layout. In its own test environment, Tom’s Guide recorded a maximum range of 115 feet. Keep that measured reviewer result separate from the advertised coverage figure. (Tom’s Guide router guide)

How to choose for a multi-level house

  1. Map the weak spots. Note rooms and floors where video calls, streaming or downloads drop out. A central router can work in an open, compact layout; separated floors, distant rooms and persistent dead zones make mesh more practical.
  2. Choose a starting system size. For the BE63, RTINGS recommends starting with two units and adding a node only if coverage needs improvement. Place the main unit near the modem and the second where it can still receive a strong connection while serving the weak area; a node placed inside a dead zone may not have a good link back.
  3. Check backhaul and wiring. Mesh nodes communicate through a backhaul that may be wireless or wired. Ethernet backhaul can avoid using wireless capacity for node-to-node traffic, but requires suitable cabling and ports. TP-Link’s BE85 maps show that the backhaul method changes the test setup, so do not treat results from wired and wireless configurations as interchangeable.
  4. Match ports to your broadband and devices. Compare the router’s WAN capacity with the speed of your internet plan, then check LAN port count and speed for wired computers, storage or access points. The BE63 has four 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports; the Archer BE550 has five. A fast Wi-Fi label alone does not ensure a wired connection can use a multi-gig internet plan.
  5. Account for client support. Wi-Fi 7 features do not appear on a device merely because the router supports them. Compatible clients are needed for features such as MLO and 320MHz bandwidth, and Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 clients are needed for 6GHz access on the Archer BE550. Older devices can connect but cannot use capabilities they do not support.
  6. Compare control and ongoing costs. Check whether setup and administration suit you—BE63 management is app-based, and RTINGS notes limited browser controls. Also check which security or parental-control features are included versus subscription-based, and compare the total cost of the full kit plus any extra node you might need.

Why square-foot coverage figures do not settle the choice

Coverage figures describe different things. NETGEAR’s Orbi 970 figure is a manufacturer maximum for a three-unit kit; TP-Link’s BE85 page identifies the size and layout of a test home; Tom’s Guide reports both a product coverage figure for the Orbi 870 and its own measured range; RTINGS reports a BE63 result from its testing. These are not equivalent measurements. Walls, building materials, floor plan, interference, node placement, backhaul and client capability all affect real performance. Use such numbers to understand the source’s claim or test—not as a guarantee for your address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get one router or mesh for a large, multi-level home?

Choose one router if a well-placed central unit covers the rooms you use. If weak areas remain across floors or distant rooms, a mesh system gives you the option to add nodes; assess coverage after setup before expanding.

Will a Wi-Fi 7 router make older devices faster?

Older devices can connect, but they cannot use Wi-Fi 7 capabilities they do not support. Features such as MLO and 320MHz bandwidth require compatible clients, and 6GHz access requires Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 support.

Do advertised square-foot numbers guarantee coverage?

No. A vendor maximum, a test-layout description and a reviewer’s measured result are different kinds of evidence. Actual coverage depends on the home, placement, backhaul, interference and client devices.
