Allocate about 4 GB of RAM, keep normal survival-generation options enabled, and raise distance settings only after checking tick time, CPU use, and memory. This combination addresses the most common compatibility failures while leaving room to tune performance for your hardware and player count.
The values below are a baseline, not a universal performance preset. RLCraft’s structure generation, flying mounts, long-running chunk generation, and heavy mod interactions make CPU speed, live exploration, and simulation range as important as the amount of RAM installed.

Open the server’s server.properties file and confirm these entries before inviting players:
enable-command-block=true
allow-flight=true
max-tick-time=-1
difficulty=3
view-distance=6
| Property | Value | What it prevents or enables | Adjustment guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
enable-command-block |
true |
RLCraft’s documented compatibility requirement for correct structure generation and villager spawning. | Leave enabled for normal worlds. Turning it off can create missing-content symptoms rather than merely disabling commands. |
allow-flight |
true |
Allows flying mounts and fairy-ring mechanics without the server incorrectly kicking players. | Keep enabled even if you do not intend to grant creative flight; it is needed for RLCraft mechanics. |
max-tick-time |
-1 |
Disables the watchdog’s automatic shutdown while a tick takes a long time, which is useful during large structure generation and world pregeneration. | Use maintenance windows and monitoring because a disabled watchdog does not make a slow tick faster. |
difficulty |
3 |
Sets Hard difficulty, the setting around which RLCraft is balanced. | Changing it alters the intended survival experience and should be a deliberate server-policy choice. |
view-distance |
6 |
Limits how much world data the server sends to each client. | Increase in small steps only after the server remains stable during exploration. |
These settings solve different problems. The first three are compatibility and stability safeguards. Difficulty controls gameplay rules. View distance is a workload control: every increase can require more chunk data to be maintained and transmitted for each player.

How to apply the settings safely
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the console’s normal stop command or your control panel’s stop action. Do not edit a live file while the server is writing it.
- Back up the configuration and world. Copy
server.propertiesand make a separate backup of the world directory. A backup lets you recover from an accidental value change or a failed generation run. - Open the correct file. Edit the
server.propertiesin the same server instance that launches the RLCraft 2.9 Forge server. Editing a template, a client installation, or a different world directory will have no effect. - Change one value per line. Use the exact lowercase property names and values shown above. Do not add quotation marks, commas, or spaces around the equals sign.
- Save and restart. The server reads these properties at startup. A restart is required after editing.
- Verify in the startup log and in-game. Test a fresh area for structures and villagers, mount a flying creature, and watch whether the server remains responsive while new terrain is explored. If a panel exposes the loaded properties, confirm that it reports the new values rather than relying on the editor alone.
If the file keeps reverting, stop the server again and check whether a control panel, startup script, or configuration-management feature is overwriting it. Keep a copy of the known-good file so you can compare changes line by line.
Normal survival and world-generation options
For a conventional RLCraft survival world, review these related properties rather than changing them casually:

| Property | Normal survival value | Reason to keep it |
|---|---|---|
online-mode |
true |
Authenticates players. Offline mode should be used only with a controlled architecture that you understand and secure. |
generate-structures |
true |
Allows structures to generate during world creation and exploration. |
spawn-monsters |
true |
Preserves hostile-mob gameplay expected by RLCraft. |
spawn-animals |
true |
Allows passive animals to appear normally. |
spawn-npcs |
true |
Preserves villager and other non-player-character spawning. |
max-players |
Set to your actual group size | A realistic cap avoids reserving a higher player capacity than the machine can support and makes capacity planning clearer. |
These are policy settings, not automatic lag fixes. Disabling mobs or structures may make a weak machine appear faster, but it also removes core RLCraft content. If you need a lighter workload, tune view and simulation distances first and measure the result.
View distance and simulation distance: what each one does
View distance
view-distance controls the amount of world data the server sends to each player. A higher value lets players see and receive terrain farther away, but it increases per-player networking and chunk-management work. It can also expose more newly generated terrain during travel, causing bursts of CPU and memory use.

Simulation distance
simulation-distance, when the server version exposes it, controls how far active ticking occurs. Entities, crops, redstone, block entities, and other game processes outside that range are not updated in the same way. Lowering it can reduce CPU load without reducing the visible horizon as much as lowering view distance, but players may notice that farms, mobs, or mechanisms stop updating until they move closer.
The two values are independent controls. A server can show distant terrain while simulating a smaller area, or it can simulate farther while sending a shorter visual horizon. Use the lowest combination that preserves the behavior your group expects.
| Server situation | Starting view distance | Simulation-distance approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small private server, modest hardware | 6 | Use a conservative value available in your version; reduce it if farms or exploration cause sustained tick delays. | Tick duration during travel, memory growth, and player complaints about inactive farms. |
| Small group, strong single-thread CPU | Test 8 after 6 is stable | Keep simulation distance no higher than needed for the group’s farms and bases. | Whether the additional chunks improve play enough to justify the extra CPU work. |
| Powerful host with few players | Test 8, then 10 only in small increments | Raise it only after confirming stable ticks with several players online. | Live chunk generation, peak CPU, and whether tick time remains consistent rather than merely acceptable at idle. |
| Many players or frequent exploration | Remain at 6 unless measurements justify more | Lower simulation distance before sacrificing essential gameplay settings such as mob spawning. | Per-player load, network saturation, and simultaneous new-chunk generation. |
Community configurations sometimes use 8–10, but those numbers are workload-dependent rather than guaranteed best settings. Change one distance value, restart if your implementation requires it, then test with the same number of players and a comparable exploration route. If tick behavior worsens, return to the previous value.
RAM and Java startup settings
The RLCraft installation guidance uses 4 GB of RAM as a starting point and warns that assigning more can introduce Java memory-leak problems. Treat 4 GB as the initial allocation for the server process, not as a promise that every player count will fit in that amount.

On a Forge server, memory is normally set in the Java launch command with -Xms and -Xmx. A wrapper or hosting panel may expose those fields instead of showing the full command. Keep the values within the host’s real capacity and leave memory for the operating system, file cache, control panel, backups, and any other services. A machine with 4 GB total cannot safely give all 4 GB to Java.
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar forge-server.jar nogui
The jar filename varies by installation, so use the launch command supplied by your RLCraft server setup. The important principle is consistency: changing server.properties cannot compensate for an undersized or oversubscribed Java heap. Conversely, increasing -Xmx without evidence of memory pressure can make garbage collection and leak symptoms harder to manage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to change the allocation
- Heap repeatedly reaches its limit while players explore: confirm that the process is actually constrained, then increase allocation modestly only if the host has unused memory.
- The host swaps, becomes unresponsive, or other services fail: reduce the Java allocation and lower distance settings before adding more memory.
- Memory rises after long uptime: record the pattern, restart during a planned window, and investigate mods or wrappers rather than assuming that more RAM is the cure.
- Idle memory looks high: do not tune from idle usage alone. Measure during exploration, combat, teleportation, and any pregeneration job.
CPU, chunk generation, and the watchdog
RLCraft can generate expensive structures and modded terrain. A fast single-thread CPU often matters more for tick stability than adding another several gigabytes of RAM. The most demanding moments are usually simultaneous exploration, teleporting to ungenerated areas, and pregeneration.
max-tick-time=-1 prevents the watchdog from terminating the server because one tick exceeded the watchdog threshold. This is useful for long structure-generation tasks and is recommended when pregenerating RLCraft terrain. It is not a performance boost: if the server is stuck, the process can remain stuck instead of stopping itself. Watch the console and operating-system metrics so that a disabled watchdog does not hide a genuine failure.

Pregenerating a world without taking the server down
Pregeneration moves some chunk-generation cost from live exploration into a planned maintenance job. It can make later travel smoother, but it is CPU- and memory-intensive and can fill storage quickly. RLCraft guidance pairs pregeneration with max-tick-time=-1; run the job when players are offline or during a scheduled maintenance window.
- Make a complete world backup and confirm that it can be restored.
- Stop ordinary gameplay or announce a maintenance period. Do not run a large generation job while several players are exploring in different directions.
- Confirm
max-tick-time=-1and check that the server has free disk space and adequate memory. - Use the pregeneration tool appropriate to your RLCraft 2.9 server installation. Start with a limited radius rather than attempting the entire world.
- Watch CPU utilization, Java heap, disk space, and tick time throughout the run. Pause or stop if the host begins swapping, the disk fills, or the operating system becomes unstable.
- Restart the server after the job if your wrapper or maintenance procedure requires it, then test travel through the generated area before returning the server to normal hours.
Pregeneration is not mandatory. For a group that rarely leaves its established region, conservative distances and periodic maintenance may be safer than generating a huge area that nobody visits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restart and maintenance policy
The RLCraft documentation reports substantial performance fixes in version 2.9 and still recommends periodic restarts, but it does not define a universal restart interval. Choose a schedule from observed behavior: rising memory, degrading tick times, wrapper errors, or recurring lag after long sessions are stronger signals than an arbitrary hourly number.
- Announce the restart and allow players to reach a safe location.
- Use a clean stop so chunks and player data are flushed.
- Keep dated backups before major configuration changes, world upgrades, or pregeneration.
- Record the distance settings, Java allocation, player count, and symptoms before changing anything; otherwise you cannot tell which adjustment helped.
Troubleshooting common RLCraft server problems
Structures or villagers are missing
Check enable-command-block=true first, then verify that generate-structures=true and spawn-npcs=true are enabled for a normal survival world. These settings affect newly generated areas; changing them does not recreate content that was already generated incorrectly. Test in a backed-up, newly explored region before drawing conclusions.

The server kicks players when they fly
Set allow-flight=true and restart. RLCraft uses flying mounts and fairy-ring mechanics, so a kick can be a false positive from the server’s flight check rather than evidence of cheating. If the problem persists, inspect the startup log and any proxy or anti-cheat layer for a second flight restriction.
The server stops during world generation
Use max-tick-time=-1, reduce simultaneous exploration, and run pregeneration during maintenance. Monitor the process while it works; disabling the watchdog prevents an automatic termination but does not resolve insufficient CPU, memory pressure, or a mod error.
Players see terrain pop-in or distant areas are unavailable
Raise view-distance one step at a time from 6 only after confirming stable ticks. If the world is visible but farms or mobs do not update at range, inspect simulation-distance rather than view distance.
Lag appears only when several players travel
Return to a conservative view distance, lower simulation distance if it is set high, and test with the same number of simultaneous explorers. Live chunk generation can dominate the load even when the server appears healthy at the spawn area.
The host becomes slow after increasing RAM
Compare the Java heap with total host memory. Leave room for the operating system and other services, then return toward the 4 GB starting point if the machine is swapping or Java garbage collection becomes disruptive. More heap is not automatically better for this modpack.

A repeatable tuning method
- Start from the five-value compatibility baseline and the normal survival properties.
- Choose a representative test: the intended player count, a short trip into ungenerated terrain, a base with farms or block entities, and a normal combat session.
- Observe tick behavior, CPU, Java heap, disk activity, and network use rather than relying on a single average.
- Change only one variable: view distance, simulation distance, RAM allocation, or player cap.
- Repeat the same test and record the result. Keep the change only if it improves the target experience without creating a new bottleneck.
- Save the final configuration and its date so future troubleshooting has a known reference point.
This method prevents a common mistake: comparing raw RAM figures while ignoring distance settings, single-thread CPU performance, live chunk generation, pregeneration status, uptime, and whether the machine is local or managed.
